Having just finished her morning routine, Jessie is about to leave her dormitory room. All actors are living in shared rooms within Event Square. These rooms aren't big and grant no privacy at all, but Jessie is used to it, since she had been living in a girl's dormitory in the Slums of Sector 7 as well. She usually goes on a stroll when she needs a little time for herself, and even though Gold Saucer, or rather Corneoland, is buzzing with tourists 24/7ć - the number of people visiting hasn't decreased at all, despite the rebranding - the anonymity of the masses grants her enough time in private.
Thereās really not much time for doing that this morning though, cause sheās in her full white dress costume already, because sheās scheduled to do a photoshoot for some promo material soon. Worst day ever to do that, she thinks. Sheās exhausted and has big black bags under her eyes. She couldnāt sleep well, lying awake for a few hours before she managed to find some rest. The happiness of seeing Biggs again after weeks of worrying about him was quickly overshadowed by the threats that were made against him when Corneoās right-hand men saw them together. Sheās hoping that Biggs understands her behavior, and that she will get the chance to explain herself properly when she gets back to Midgar in a few weeks.
The keys of her room are about to vanish in her purse when her previous thoughts get interrupted.
āJessie!ā A voice out of breath calls her name. A voice she longs to hear so badly, until she realizes the consequences of hearing it. Heās still here? Worry starts to build inside of her, and quickly turns into anger.
āBiggs? What are you still doing here? I told you to go home! What if they see you? I canāt believeā¦ā He had caught up to her by the time she reached this point in her tirade.
āJess,ā She secretly hates when people call her by that nickname. āI knowā¦I know, but not now. I need to tell you somethingā¦Immediately!ā His expression is urgent and heās still trying to catch his breath. Did he run all the way up here? She knows that heās as worrisome as one could get, but heās also usually one to stay calm and collected no matter the circumstances, so seeing him panic like this, lets her cool down as much as to actually give him the chance to explain whatās going on.
āOkay, okayā¦but not here. Follow me to the maintenance area, only some staff use it.ā She looks around to check if thereās already people around who spotted them, but the hall is empty. At least thatās something.
Biggs is trailing after Jessie, they walk fast but arenāt running. Not a single word is uttered, even though Biggs canāt barely contain the info he needs to desperately tell her.
When they reach the door that leads to the maintenance area, Jessie makes sure that nobody is in sight one last time, before pushing it open. They both slip through quickly. Another hallway greets them, but this one is cluttered with boxes and tools on both sides of the walls. Some doors lead into rooms with words like āelectricityā, āsecurityā, āinfirmaryā and ācleaningā written on them. At the end of the hallway the description āstaircaseā can be spotted.
āAlright,it should be safe to talk here. So, whatās going on?ā Jessie turns around to face Biggs and crosses her arms in front of her.
Where does he even begin? Does it even matter as long as he tells her the most important part? Biggs mostly fails to come straight to the point, he always needs to make sure that all information surrounding a matter is communicated, itās very crucial for the part he plays in Avalanche - scouting and figuring out ways to achieve their goals, strategizing and making sure that thereās a backup plan for every possible obstacle that comes their wayā¦Or rather it was the part he played, before their tiny branch of Avalanche fell apart due to Wedgeās loss and departure of Tifa and Barrettā¦and yeah, maybe heād include Cloud in there, too, now that he helped them out so many times. Even though Cloud always pointed out that heās only in there for the Gil, his involvement with them and emotional attachment became quite imminent by the time the plate got dropped by Shinra. Biggs sometimes wondered why he wasnāt more jealous of him, though. A badass SOLDIER like him, who got the attention of everyone he came across, even the menās, but especially Jessieās, should make him feel intimidated. In the end, after having had to admit that he harbors certain feelings for Jessie that are something more than just friendship or companionship, he accepted their current status quo as is, though, and decided that itās best to root for her happiness rather than lose her completely due to jealousy. Anyways, he knows that they probably donāt have much time, so better leave out the unnecessary partsā¦
āListen, I overheard a convo of these goons from yesterdayā¦they were talkinā about yaā...ā Biggs is speaking fast, and not in a way he usually speaks to her. And what heās getting at makes her uncomfortable immediately, too. āTheyāre planning toā¦ā
āMy, my, my, yaā again, huh?ā
Biggs and Jessie freeze instantly when they hear Kotchās voice, much like the day before, the worst kind of deja-vu imaginable. Of course heās not alone, Scotch would practically be sewn to his hip, if that were possibleā¦but worse, framed by them from both sides, is Corneo, standing in the center, not looking pleased at all.
āAh yeah, how unfortunateā¦seems you guys were right and our cute little birdie, Rosie, is about to take flight.ā Birdie. What a creepy nickname, Jessie despised it from the start, but has bore with it ever since. But then, Corneo even addresses her by her roleās name now. She really is just property to him, much like how she was objectified by Kotch and Scotch last night.
āGlad we got some Shinra sponsorship for surveillance recently, or they couldāve slipped out easily.ā Scotch remarked. So thatās how they got spottedā¦Damn, she wished she wouldāve known. She wished she wouldāve been more careful. She wished she wouldāve scouted everything thoroughly, like Biggs does. If they had had more time, they wouldāve come up with a plan together - rather, Biggs wouldāve and she would have provided the physical means to escape.
While Jessie is overwhelmed with regret, Corneo calmly gives his men an order, āGet him.ā
Thereās barely any time to react before Kotch and Scotch jump right at Biggs and each of them grabs one of his arms, holding Biggs tight in their grip. Heās struggling, of course, but doesnāt hold a chance against them, despite being fit and well trained. Jessie recognized earlier that Biggs was still not fully recovered, he usually wouldnāt have been out of breath running that easily. Is there anything she can say? Or do? She feels helpless. If only I had taken them with me, she thinks for a second. Panic starts to rise.
In the very same moment Corneo steps in front of Biggs, though, presents a knife in his right hand and rams it into the side of his left abdomen, saying calmly, āAlways loved the ways of Tomberrys, they can do so much damage with just a mere kitchen knife.ā
A sharp pain ripples through Biggsā body. He remembers this pain all too well. It hadnāt been too long since he got ripped apart internally by the bullets of Shinra men. The world around him comes to a stop, yet again, he thinks. Thereās a scream in the distance. Or maybe itās rather closeā¦
āNooooo!!!! Biggs!!ā Jessie canāt grasp what she just witnessed. Corneo moves away, the knife makes a clinking sound when he throws it away in the distance, his men let go of Biggs and he slumps to the ground, caught by Jessieās embrace, who manages to catch him from falling hard on the floor just in time.
āThatās what you get for messing with my business.ā Corneo says before leaving with his posse.
The hallway is empty again. Jessie kneels on the floor cradling Biggsā head and upper body in her arms. Blood spills out of his wound, tainting his upper khaki green shirt in the same shade of red as Wedgeās bandana she put around his neck last eveningā¦itās so much blood, though. Too much already, Jessie panics.
Her white Rosa dress slowly changes color, too. She doesnāt know much about first aid, but stopping a bleeding by putting pressure on it, is one thing she could manage to do, so she takes one end of her dressā skirt and rips it apart, forms a ball and presses it onto Biggsā wound. He screams out in pain and she wonders for a second, if she shouldnāt have done that.
When she meets his eyes, though, to check his condition, he wears a slight smile. āOwwwā¦Yaā shouldnāt have destroyed that pretty dress, yaā know.ā How the hell can he still be lecturing her?
Jessieās shaking her head, tears are already forming in her eyes, āWhateverā¦stop worrying about nonsense.ā
He senses that maybe he again will not have much time left before unconsciousness, or worse, takes a hold of him, so he wants to make sure she gets to know what he wanted to tell her the whole time. Obviously not what he feels for her, but what he knows about Corneoās plan.
āJess,ā the first time sheās not bothered by this name at all. āThey wonāt let you goā¦even after your contract endsā¦ā He coughs. āCorneo wants you as his plaything, and if you refuse, theyāll make you a prize in the Dustbowlās āBeast Battlegroundsā.ā
She listens carefully, yet, she canāt help but not care at all at this very moment. āYeah, okayā¦ā a pause, āLook, Iāll go get help now.ā
āNo! You need to leave.ā Biggsā voice is hoarse.
She shakes her head in disagreement, āI canāt! ā¦I canāt just leave you like this.ā
He grabs her hand then, the only thing he really cares about is her safety and to be honest he has struggled a lot with certain things since he woke up anyway.
āYaā know, I kinda wondered why I got spared? When the plate fell, I meanā¦so many died.ā He smiles ruefully, ā Iām so glad you didnāt, though.ā
She can barely take this. It feels like a farewell, an irrevocable one. āYeah, and you wonāt die either.ā She explains.
He huffs a little at this point, then says, āMaybe, THIS is the reason why I survived? To be able to make sure youāre safe one last time?ā
The blood loss makes him feel dizzy at this point, he knows he hasnāt much time left, so he wants her to stay with him, āDonāt leave, okay?ā His right hand reaches for her left cheek, catching a tear that has been escaping her eye. āHey, Iāll be going to where Wedge isā¦ and your parentsā¦ Iāll be greeting them from yaā...ā
Itās too much now. Too much silent longing. Too much of containing the truth. Too much to bottle up everything she couldnāt tell him before.
So she rushes in and meets his lips with hers. If thatās the last thing heāll ever remember, the last thing heāll ever feel, the only thing he will carry into the Lifestream, then it should be this kiss.
ā---------------
Step after step takes Tifa higher up the pillar. Nothing but noise. Her steps clang on the metal stairs. Gunshots. The constant whirring of helicopter blades. Small explosions. Then thereās Cloud - finally! And then, a much bigger explosion on the floor right above.
Meanwhile, thereās been nothing else but fighting back against Shinraās men, and she soon ran out of bombsā¦this last one really needs to make a difference, she thinks before letting it detonate - no matter her own life.
When Cloud and Tifa reach her, sheās buried underneath a big chunk of debris from her bomb. Doesnāt matter, maybe she bought some time to help others. Sheās responsible for the deaths of so many innocent people anyway, thereās no need to hold back anymore. Instant karma, she thinks. And then, sheās hoping to meet her father again within the Lifestream. They get her out and move her to a safer spot in the meantime.
She talks to Cloud holding his hands - heās still good looking, and flustered by every compliment he gets. Itās cute. Itās fun. It makes her smile. She slips away, seeing Tifaās tearsā¦
āJessie!ā There is a voice again. Where does it come from? The Lifestream?
āJessie!ā againā¦.
And then thereās more than the black from before. More than just silence. Thereās headlights, and noise and people running up and down not wearing Shinra-gear.
āJessie. It's me, Tifa. Can you hear me?ā Barely, considering the surrounding noisesā¦Ah yeah, best time for inside jokes - literally
āTifa?...Havenāt you gone ahead with Cloud?ā
āIāll catch up with him soon enough.ā she smiles ruefully.
āYou should go - the pillar is more important than me.ā Jessie sees tears forming again in Tifaās eyes.
āOkay, but try to hold onā¦theyāre coming for you. I told them, Okay? Your location and all.ā
Something starts ringing in Jessieās ear. Tifaās voice starts to become distant again. Jessie knows that sheāll lose consciousness soon enough again. One last message she could probably muster up...
"Hey, Tifa?" - āHmmm?ā
āCould you tell Biggs what he really meant to me? You were right, I shouldā¦haveā¦toldā¦him.ā Tifa barely manages to keep her face straight. When she ran up the pillar, she came across a severely injured and unconscious Biggs. She checked on him of course and sent help, but she also knew that it might have meant no difference considering the situation.
So Tifa lies instead. āI will do that. Hang in there for now.ā - āThanks.ā Jessie mumbles and she falls unconscious again.
ā----------------------------
His hand leaves her cheek at this very moment. Thereās no strength left in his body. Jessie still holds him tight though, not being able to understand the current situation.
āNo!! No! Please!! ā¦Biggs, open your eyesā¦please!! I didn't even get the chance to tell youā¦please, Biggs, come back to me.ā
The amount of tears clouded her vision. His face is nothing more than a blur of different colors by now. Yet, she can't stop sobbing uncontrollably.

Will add the drawing as soon as it's finished - what can I say, my muses constantly shift from drawing to cooking to rest togaming to writing and so on ...š Sorry for that inconsistency

Notes:
I don't even know how many tears I shed while writing this...
The flashback scene is inspired by chapter 12 of Remake, when Biggs and Jessie are basically both at the brink of their deaths on the pillar.
Slight spoiler for Rebirth too:
When you need to face Corneo for Dio there's actually a Corneo-fied Tomberry you need to fight, so I kinda got inspired by that when Corneo uses the line about liking them here. (The fight sucks though, but actually doesn't if you use items/materia that decline instant death)
Also, just one more chapter to go, and I still can't stop sobbing...just like Jessie
Also love the consistency they maintain with even minor details like Biggs' (and Wedge's) favorite snack from Remake.
...and that Jessie's Mom apparently knows all their favorites and stacked up on them. š„ŗ
(Who else chose the chips/crisps with Cloud when presented the choice to get one snack for free in Rebirth? I'm definitely a Biggs and Wedge person in taste šāš» ...and I didn't even remember what they were snacking in Remake & the Biggs scene was after that decision as well š)
Great observation. They are a unity, each of them has a certain purpose.
A cog in a machine, if one part is missing, the whole thing isn't working anymore. Which basically means they can't really exist without each other.
The OG tag is interesting...cause I never got the feeling that Biggs was the leader of their trio. He was the strategist and thinker but not deciding on things.
Rebirth emphasized that too.
Biggs trying to bomb the reactor but it not working because there's no Jessie to build the bomb and him getting caught and killed because there's no Wedge to keep watch....
Biggs has been reading the letter Jessie sent over and over again. It hasnāt even been addressed to him, and was basically only containing basic information:
>> Ms. Folia,
This is my first payment. I hope itāll suffice for the moment.
You know, that I had planned to stay here for only a few weeks, but I got an offer to extend my stay - the payment had been so good, that I accepted that offer. So Iāll be staying longer, in fact, until they change the play in 2 months.
Iāll be sending money again soon. If thereās anything else I can do in the meantime, donāt hesitate to ask.
I hope everybody is fine and holding up. I canāt wait to be back.
Many hugs,
Jessie <<
The concerning part was the envelope it came in. There is a the stamp of the Gold Saucer Post Office on it. Many hope to receive written greetings from friends and loved ones featuring this stamp. Stamp . Wonder why thatās the name of Shinraās mascot? A thought that had crossed Biggsā mind several times in the past. Especially when they used Stamp the dog as a sign to lead the way in some of their Avalanche operations. Maybe he wouldāve been happy about the letter from that particular post office as well, if one detail hadn't been different. The letters underneath the logo of the stamp on the envelope didnāt read āGold Saucerā anymore, but āCorneolandā.
Some news travels slower than othersā¦ and they were controlled by Shinra anyway. So to hear that āGold Saucerā had officially been rebranded and would be called āCorneolandā from now on, was never on the top list of prioritized subjects to report on. Since most people in the slums couldnāt afford to go there anyway, they didnāt even care. Biggs did though. He did some digging, and found out that it was actually not just a rebranding, but a whole change of whoās in charge. Apparently, Dio and Corneo agreed to fight over ownership rights to Gold Saucer in Musclehead Colosseum - the battle arena - and Dio suffered a roaring defeat. Some connections said that it wasnāt fair and square, and Dio had been injured before the battle. But whatever may be true, it doesnāt change the fact that Jessie is there, working for Don Corneo. If that creep is involved, thereās no way this could ever turn out well.
So thereās really only one thing to do. Go, and get her back to Leaf House as fast as possible. Sure, everybody Biggs knows always teases him with being too worried and overprotective, but the last time he had a bad gut feeling, he had dismissed itā¦and then the slums were buried underneath the one piece of pizza that had been the disc of Sector 7. He wonāt be too late this time.
Ms. Folia is understanding and wishing him good luck. The kids are mainly bothered by the fact that heās leaving again, but since he promised to bring some souvenirs, and Jessie, they gave him a pass. He grabs some money he had hid close to Leaf House, a spot he always uses since heās been a kid growing up in the orphanage himself, and leaves.
--------
The lights are impressive. In fact, everything about this place is. They use Mako like starving men devouring a meal... Barrett wouldāve come up with a much fiercer comparison , Biggs snickers to himself. Focus! I need to find Jessie.
The visitorsā information guide, which oddly looks like the weirdest Mogry one could ever imagine, advises him to go to Event Square - the theater. After reaching it and asking for her specifically, he gets dismissed. Jessie will be performing on stage soon, he canāt see her now.
Wait! He can, actually. So he buys a ticket and waits for the show to begin.
The seats are sold out. Every single guest is eager to see the play. Biggs recognized Jessieās poster on his way to the theater. She looks like an angel. There wouldnāt be any other description that could ever fit any better. The white flowing dress sheās wearing, the lighting, the white wings, her sincere expression. Definitely not the Jessie I know , he remembers shaking his head slightly in amusement.
Suddenly, the lights go out, the curtain rises, music starts to playā¦let the show begin. A group of people perform a ballet dance while a narrator sums up the premise of the story they are about to tellā¦
And then there she is. Slowly descending from the ceiling, bathed in sparkling light. All eyes are on her.
Wow . Biggs knows that this word doesn't even come close to giving justice to what he's seeing. He secretly thanks the circumstances that brought him here. That he got the opportunity to see her like this, performing on stage, being somebody else completely.
She's beautiful, no debate about that. Even when she's sweaty and her face is covered in dirt after missions. But the way it is presented here, the astonishing atmosphere that highlights every aspect of her, amazes him beyond comprehension.
He never really cared about what āLoveless' is about. Something romantic , it's in the name, after all. But seeing the story play out for the first time, is invoking a sudden feeling of sadness in him. He can't really pinpoint why it does, though.
The ending is bittersweet. The hero parts from his lover Rosa, the part Jessie plays, promising to come back after he completed his journey. They embrace one last time, then the play is over.
A roaring applause around him is what follows. Biggs somehow still can't really process why the play has affected him so much. Is it, because he had seen Jessie for the first time again? Or because, even though they went through so much, in the end, the lovers still couldn't be together? He's not into romance per se, so why would something like this bother him at all?
He finally manages to get up from his seat and join the crowd in their standing ovations. The lights get turned on again. All actors return to the stage to thank the audience and bathe in the joyous clapping they earned from their stellar performances.
Jessie is beaming in the center of her acting colleagues and scans the crowd from time to time. She loves seeing all the happy, content and moved faces of the audience. It validates her art even more, and gives her the strength to keep going.
There's still so much joy in this world and we definitely need to fight to protect it. She concludes. After her third bow to the audience she looks up againā¦ This can't be! But there's no doubt about it, it IS him. Within the many faces that had just been watching her performance, is Biggsā, whoās smiling right at her. She can't help but tear up a little with the realization. He woke up, he's recoveredā¦and he's here.
As soon as all the actors had returned backstage for good, she ran back to the theater hall. She didn't even change out of her costume.
Please let him still be there. That was her only thought, more of a plea than anything else.
The doors had already been closed for cleaning and the hall was empty, except for a lonely figure still sitting in their seat, waiting.
āBiggs!ā she exclaims.
He raises his head when he hears his name. It was the right choice to wait here , he thinks for a second, then gets up from his seat and moves to the aisleā¦just in time for Jessie to reach him.
He's caught off guard when she flings herself at him. Her arms slung around his neck, her head buried in his chest, an embrace so intimate that he failed to react right away. After a moment and without even realizing it, his hands automatically move around her body, both coming to a stop, resting on her back lightly at firstā¦but when he closes his eyes to bathe in her presence, in this unknown closeness between them, he can't help, but tighten the grip on her body.
It's almost desperate. As if they both feared the other would vanish, if they let go even a little. Jessie doesn't know how much time passed, seconds? Minutes? Years? She finally moves her head to look at him though, is she making sure that he's not a Fata Morgana? Or did she only miss looking him in the eyes?
āI can't believe that you're really here.ā She breaks the tightness of the embrace a little when she starts to directly speak to him.
āWouldn't wanna have missed seeing you perform.ā He warmly states.
She knows he means it. But she's also sure that it's not all that there's to it.
āCommon, be honest. I know you well enough to know that this isn't the only reason you're here.ā
Biggs snickers a little, smiling shyly. They still haven't let go of each other. Biggsā hands had wandered to get a better look at her, comfortably resting on both sides of her waist. Jessie's fingers were intertwined behind his neck. Neither of them recognized this, though. There was only joyā¦ written over both their faces, so they had no time to realize the gravity of this new kind of intimacy that started to blossom between them.
āAnd here I am thinkinā ya would be glad to see me.ā He answers teasingly.
A statement like this would usually result in a snarky comment from Jessie, and then they'd banter until one gave up - well, until Biggs gave up. This time, though, Jessie looks him straight in the eyes and sincerely says:
āYou have NO idea how happy I am to see you, Biggs.ā
His expression freezes a little in shock. Her being like this is rare, she usually hides behind jokes and teasing. He decides to pay her back with sincerity as well.
āMe, too, Jessieā¦Ms. Folia told me about youā¦that you were by my side most of the time while I was unconsciousā¦Really, I donāt know what to sayā¦besides, thank you.ā
āNo,ā she shakes her head a little, āI wish I couldāve done more.ā
He sees sadness overcoming her expression. Well done, Biggs, you completely ruined the mood. So he tries to change the subject. He lets go of her waist and starts to rummage through one of his pockets. Jessie removes her hands from the place theyād been behind his neck to give him better access to whatever he was looking for.
āThought ya might want those back?ā he says, presenting two items.
One is the glove she left on the desk in his room. The other Wedgeās red bandana. He had really brought them with him. A token for every member of their trio. Thatās what they were, at least, before they met Tifa and Barrett.
āHey, whereās your headband?ā It took her until this moment to realize that he wasnāt wearing it. And his clothes had been different too.
āAh yeah, well, they had cut it open when patching me upā¦itās too short to wear now. Same goes for my old clothes.ā He scratches the back of his head with his free hand.
Jessie feels a little embarrassed that she hadnāt thought of the obvious. If she had inspected his headband at least once, she wouldāve known. Well, too late now. She absolutely doesnāt want any of the two items she gave to him, though. So she puts her hands on Biggsā one that contained them and closes it gently.
āThese are presents, keep them as memorabilia of better days.ā
He knows that sheās thinking of Wedge specificallyā¦Jessie and Biggs are still alive, after all. So are Cloud, Tifa and Barrett, although they have gone on a mission to save the planet. At least thatās what they heard from Marlene and Elmyra, Aerithās mother who took Marlene in after Seventh Heaven, her home, got destroyed. Biggs was relieved that Marlene had been safe and sound. He loves all kids, but to be completely honest, Marlene holds a special place in his heart. Whenever they were tired from their missions, or just hungover from drinking too much, she managed to make them smile. Sometimes, he wondered how it would feel to have a daughter like her of his own. Sure, he already had plenty of kids he took care of, but he always feels more like a big brother or mentor to them than a father. The current world is not exactly a great place to raise a child, though, so he quickly dismisses this thought every single time. Maybe Iāll go with cats thenā¦Just like Wedge .
āLetās divide Wedgeās bandana between us. You should have something from him, too.ā Biggs protests, presenting the red piece of cloth again.
Jessie looks at the bandana, considering, then takes it from Biggs. She enfolds it with her hands and steps in front of him - as close as they were a few moments before. They are looking at each other, studying their behavior. Jessie moves her hands behind his neck againā¦her gaze never leaves Biggsā... Whatās with the weird tension? He finally admits that something about them feels completely different now compared to their interactions before the pillar incidentā¦Sheās fidgeting in the meantime.
āHereā¦let me take a look.ā She takes a few steps back from him. āPerfect.ā
When he looked down in the direction of his chest, he finally understood what she had been doing.
āYouāre not the head bandana type. But it suits you around the neck.ā She winks, smiling.
āButā¦ā Heās cut off immediately.
āNo protests! You keep it." She insists. āAnd I get to look at it whenever I see you.ā She is radiant, grinning from ear to ear, her eyes sparkling with content.
āItās a deal.ā He happily nods in agreement. Then, after a pause, he adds, āSpeaking of which, whatās up with your agreement with Corneo?ā
Finally, the catās out of the bag, she thinks. Heās worrying again.
āSo thatās really why you came here all the way.ā She canāt help but feel a little disappointed.
Noticing the change in her demeanor, Biggs tries to appear appeasing, āLook, I know that youāre tough, Jessie. And Iām very glad I saw you perform. You wereā¦ā he huffs at the loss of words, āout of everybody else's league.ā Radiant, stellar, gorgeous, mesmerizing, beautifulā¦ here he stops mentally adding words and continues his speech.
āCorneo is dangerous, though. You know that heās powerful, andā¦on top of that, unpredictable. Come back home with me.ā Heās pleading now.
Before Jessie gets to answer, though, theyāre suddenly interrupted by two people she would rather not know. Kotch and Scotch, Don Corneoās right hand men, waltz into the theater hall, right in her and Biggsā direction.
āMy my my, our starletās havinā a nice little chit-chat with one of her fans?ā Kotch teases amused.
āLook at how close they are. Bet itās her boyfriend, nah?ā Scotch chimes in.
āThe Don āll not be pleased about that, ya know.ā
Shit. I need to do something, or weāll both be in trouble. Jessie takes a small breath and starts her charade.
āNo need to be jealous, you two and Corneo know Iām all his.ā She then points at Biggs, āThis guy right here? Heās just somebody from Midgar I used to know. He happened to recognize me and we just had a little talk about home. Heās about to go now anyway, right?ā She looks Biggs in the eyes intently.
Biggs listened to Jessieās rambling, and hated every single word she uttered. He got the hint at the end, but every fiber in his body fights to follow her lead. He trusts her completely, thatās not the issue. The issue is that he wants to kick the asses of these despicable people, and then move on to Corneo. Itās unfortunate that he couldn't bring his pistol, but firearms are forbidden around here. So he balls his hands into fists instead. At least that releases the tension a little.
Jessie grows impatient, though and addresses him again, āAlright. Was nice chatting with you. Safe travels home.ā
Biggs canāt take it anymore. The urge to say something became too strong. The urge to grab her wrists and take her with him is even stronger, though. So he does exactly that...
āNo! Iām not letting you stay here with these creeps, Jessie!ā
Biggs, what are you doing? Why canāt you just play along? But itās too late now. Kotch and Scotch had already accepted the challenge.
āWoah, woah, woah, not so fast.ā Kotch steps in front of Biggs, āThat white knight shit ya pullinā aināt impressinā anybody. Sheās the Donās property, as per contract. So if ya donāt wanna end up as Abzuās dinner, ya should be goneā¦and pronto.ā
Thatās as open as a threat can be. Abzu is Corneoās pet monster, itās huge and extremely dangerous.
Dammit! Biggs had just recovered. No way I'll drag him into this mess. This is Jessieās last chance to keep Biggs safe. To protect him from any harm. Itās on her now and she wonāt risk losing him again. Not until he knowsā¦
-----------
It was already late at night at Seventh Heaven, only a few lamps above the counter were granting some light to the remaining members of Avalanche. Barrett and Wedge had already retired for the evening, but Biggs and Jessie had volunteered to stay a while longer and help Tifa clean up the bar.
"So, it's just us three again then, huh?" Jessie nearly stumbles over this sentence. After starting the evening test drinking Tifa's new cocktail creations with Biggs, the few beers with the whole Avalanche group later, had really taken a toll on her sobriety.
"I should've really stayed true to my word and cut you off the drinks for good...you can't even form a proper sentence anymore," remarked Biggs.
"Ugh, you're always cutting the fun short, though, so you definitely did at least stay true to that.", Jessie said in a playfully teasing voice.
"Yeah, yeah...got it." He waves his right hand in front of his face in defeat. "Got an early morning tomorrow, so I'm out anyway. Good night, yaā two!"
Tifa smiles and says, "Good night to you as well. And thanks for helping clean up."
A snicker and small head shake later, Biggs adds, "No worries. 's my hobby. Really helps to clear up your mind."
"Here we go again..."Jessie grins, rolling her eyes a little.
Turning around to leave and trying to ignore Jessie's comment, Biggs can't help but add, "Oh, and Tifa, no more drinks for her. I ain't gonna be around anymore to catch her from falling like earlier...yet alone carry her home."
"Only nice and cool people get to carry me anyway!" is the last he hears before he's out of the bar, chuckling to himself. He might have really gotten on Jessie's bad side with that remark, and he's wondering if it might come back biting him in the ass later. Jessie's a force to be reckoned with after all and she never fails to show that part of her personality to anyone who's dumb enough to underestimate her. But that's a problem for another day, he thinks.
"Psych! So annoying that he treats me like a child...", Jessie mumbles, still in rage mode.
"He only worries about you." Tifa smiles knowingly. "Yeah, way too much though...Anyway, please tell me you're not gonna listen to him, and we can at least enjoy one more drink together before going to bed? You know, us Avalanche girls must stick together." Jessie winks at Tifa while forming this request in a begging tone.
Sticking her tongue out, Tifa says, "Alright, but it's going to be virgin."
Tifa fixes two mocktails in an instant, and Jessie needs to admit that she has never seen a faster and better bartender than her in her entire life. Not even the professionals at the Gold Saucer are able to show this kind of expertise when it comes to drinks... and punches , Jessie internally adds and chuckles about her joke.
"To Avalanche girl power!" Jessie raises the glass of the bright orange drink she received. "Okay then!" and with that, the two women clung their glasses together gracefully, each taking a sip of their drink afterwards.
There's a small moment of silence between them, so Jessie decides to take another gulp of her tasty drink, when suddenly Tifa breaks the silence: "You like him, right? ... Biggs, I mean."
Still wondering if she really heard right, what Tifa just said, the fluid Jessie was just about to swallow, nearly got stuck in her throat. Three small coughs and wiping away a tear that escaped her left eye later, she managed to compose herself.
āDidā¦Did you just say that you think Iām into Biggs?ā Jessie desperately needs to set this straight.
āSorry for the sudden questionā¦didnāt mean to catch you off guard. I just thought that itās quite obvious, you know.ā Tifa says sincerely.
"Obvious? What makes you think that?" Jessie is shocked that, in fact, this is truly what Tifa believes.
Now itās Tifaās turn to take another sip of her drink. She then moves to the other side of the counter to sit next to Jessie, cradling her glass in both hands. Tifa contemplates how to put what she observed into words, when suddenly that weird, knowing smile from earlier appears again.
āWell, youāre a really nice person, Jessie. To everyone, even strangers. Except for Wedge and Biggs, you really give them a hard time sometimes.ā Tifa is chuckling for a second and then continues, āI know you have known them both for a long time, but thereās still a difference in how you treat each of them that I recognizedā¦For example, earlier, when we were having pizza and beer and Wedge was kinda having a downer, you instantly built him up because heās your friend, far and foremostā¦But you canāt take Biggsā cheeky remarks for even a second without paying him back - that happened twice today, actually. And one of these instances was very touchy as well.ā Jessie became unusually silent by this point. āSo thatās why I think you like Biggs more than a mere friend. Youāre so different around him, not in a bad way, more like you feel you can be your true self around him, not the perfect actress from the Gold Saucer stage that everyone else expects, just Jessie from Avalanche.ā
Tifa had finished her explanation and was waiting for an answer. Or any reaction at all. Jessie, on the other hand, was just staring at her half-emptied glass.
āWow, and here I was thinking nobody could look through my acting skills,ā she suddenly states, still focusing on nothing but her glass.
āSorry, I didnāt want to embarrass you. Letās talk about something else.ā had been Tifaās response. But it was too late to deny the truth to Jessie. Screw alcohol for making your tongue loose. āIn vinum veritas estā - āthe truth lies within wineā, the saying goes. Only in this case, itās more like āin Cosmo Canyonum veritas estā.
āNo, youāre right, Tifa.ā A pause. āI think Iāve been liking him for a while now, actually.ā
Thereās silence stretching between them again, until Tifa gets up from her stool next to Jessie, gets behind the counter, and prepares another drink for them both. Itās definitely not virgin this time, though.
āHere.ā Tifa moves back towards Jessieās side and sets a second glass in front of her. āThis one is perfect for this kind of talk.ā
Jessie takes the new drink in her right hand, raises it in the air to salute Tifa, and devours half of it in one go. Tifa tilts her head, watching Jessie, and then moves on to say, āI mean, I get why youāre into him. Heās very kind, protective, funny, smart, and likes kids - seriously, who spends nearly all of his income on donating it to an orphanage?ā They both snicker in amazement. āAaaand, on top, heās really handsome and well trained too.ā
āOh no, donāt worry. Heās all yours. Thereās actually someone I like already.ā
āDo I know them?ā
āNo, heās someone from my past, my hometown.ā
Jessie nods in agreement.
āSo, are you going to confess to Biggs?ā, is the second time this evening that Jessie nearly chokes on her drink. Whatās with Tifa and her bad timing
āNo! Never.ā Jessie is shaking her head furiously.
āWhyās that?ā Tifa asks curiously.
āIsnāt THAT obvious? You already said it yourself. We have known each other for so long, and heās one of my best friends. I wouldnāt want to risk that. Besides, thereās Avalanche as well. Weāve come really far and are about to really make a difference. No way would I let something like that come in between our goals.ā
āBut isnāt one of our goals fighting for a better future?ā Tifa looks at Jessie intently. āA future we all want to live in? A future that makes us happy? Donāt you think you wouldn't regret not telling him? ā¦Cause, honestly, I did regret that I'd never told the person I liked what I felt. But now, itās too late. I donāt even know where he is right now.ā
Jessie sees the sadness in Tifaās eyes. It has been a while since sheās been affected by a conversation that much, but it also makes her feel so much closer to her friend.
āMaybe, if our missions go well, Iāll consider telling himā¦ā Jessie winks and then suddenly turns serious, raising her right index finger in front of Tifaās face āBut donāt you dare say a word to anyone!ā
Tifa gets the playful hint, āHehe! I wonāt, promise!ā
-------------
āGo home!" Jessie practically yells at Biggs. āItās none of your business.ā She yanks her hand out of his grip and continues, āIāll be back after I fulfill my contract." Her voice gets softer again, āPromise, okay?ā
He always secretly admired Jessieās fierce side, even though ending up on her bad side from time to time was scary as hell. Not as scary as what he just witnessed, though. Thereās no need to argue any further when sheās like this, that much he knows. So he sadly nods in defeat and turns to leave the hall.
"Alright. If thatās what you wantā¦See ya around then."
As if she really wanted to stay rather than go with himā¦To be in his presenceā¦To be with him - literallyā¦He has no clue that this is what she wants the most. Biggs, Iām sorry, but I canāt violate the contract. Itās simply too dangerous, you said so yourselfā¦Corneo is unpredictable. Knowing that she did the right thing, doesnāt keep her from feeling her heart torn into two, when she sees the entrance door of the theater hall closing after Biggs.
-------
He stayed at the Haunted Hotel for a night. Not in the hopes of trying again to persuade Jessie to come with him, it was simply too late to leave the previous evening. Since he couldnāt find any rest, he basically spent the whole night drinking at the bar on the first floor. The drinks had been fancy, ghost-themed cocktails that could never reach Tifaās in quality. He wouldāve given one hand for a āCosmo Canyonā. And the other to be able to have drinks again with everyone at Seventh Heaven. People sometimes argue heās drinking too much, but this, and cleaning, are the only things that keep his mind from overthinking everything.
Much to his own surprise, the alcohol wasnāt able to distract him from worrying this time. Worse, it actually made him wallow in self-pity. He had failed to get Jessie out of Corneoās reach. Youāre useless. You failed to save Wedge. And now youāre losing her, too.
The speakers above his head sprung to life, an announcement followed, the gondola back to the ground would leave soon. He made his way to the station.
The gondola was already in sight when he overheard bits of a conversation. He recognized the voices from the previous day. The most unpleasant encounter he ever had, and they were talking about Jessie at this very moment.
He follows them, but stays as far away as possible, so he wouldnāt raise any suspicion. He definitely needs to know what they are up to, and Jessieās role in itā¦he canāt believe what they were talking about.
They suddenly look in his direction, but Biggs is already gone, sprinting to Event Square.

Notes:
Loved writing this chapter, especially the tension between them.
Gold Saucer never becomes Corneoland in the game, thanks to Cloud and friends. I think the bet was also just about naming rights and not ownership. I enjoyed raising the stakes, though.
Biggs is wearing the Rebirth outfit in this story, even though I like the other one better. I really wondered about the bandana he wears around his neck when playing Rebirth, so I came up with a little explanation. Would love if it really is Wedge's.
I mean look at the resemblance of the color and shape - it must be his, right?
So I couldn't help myself - there's too much Biggs x Jessie in my mind and I need to get them out in the open for everyone else to enjoy.
I've never written fanfiction before, so please bear with me. šš¼āāļø
These are the Days of our Lives
Chapter 1: Aftermath / Under Pressure
The sun is shining brightly through the window, casting the room in a golden light. Every other person would open their eyes to welcome a new morning, but the man lying in bed doesn't.
Yet, the first thing she does every morning is come to his room to check on him, see if there's progress, make sure he's still at least breathing, and then get disappointed that he's not waking up - it's been weeks, so why isn't he? She's been asking that very same question every single day as well.
She wants to remain by his side, but the sight of his injured, unmoving body painfully reminds her of her father's state, so she removes her hand from where it was resting on his and prepares to leave.
"Good morning," a voice calls from behind.
"Good morning to you too."
"How is he holding up?" the young woman in glasses inquires.
"No changes."
A small nod and rueful smile are her answers. Silence grows in the room as if a loss is mourned.
He is NOT dead, though! Not like so many others who lost their lives when the plate fell. Not like her parents, who lived topside the very same plate that buried the Sector 7 slums underneath it.
Not like Wedge who fell from Shinra Tower and whose death was reported by members of Avalanche's main branch. You would've assumed he'd land on his feet like one of his cats, but that was obviously not the case. So the only thing that remains of him is his red bandana, which she received as a keep-sake.
Only she and him survived, rescued by members of the neighborhood watch just minutes before the collapse - at least that's what they told her after she regained consciousness. He hadn't yet, and his bullet wounds still need new dressings from time to time. But at least Biggs is alive. He just needs to finally wake up.
"Jessie? Can I talk to you for a moment?" Ms. Folia's request suddenly puts an end to her reminiscing.
"Of course. How can I help?"
"Well, you've been here for a few weeks now and know your way around..."
"Are you trying to ask me to be a teacher here? Cause I don't think that would be a good idea," Jessie states sheepishly.
Ms. Folia shakes her head reassuringly and says, "Ehm, no. Don't worry...Truth be told, we're in quite a pinch. We received donations to keep the Leaf House running, but ever since the plate of Sector 7 collapsed, they stopped."
Of course they did; after all, it was Biggs who anonymously sent money to the Leaf House every month, Jessie thinks to herself.
"It's getting really hard to feed the kids without that money, even more so because the number of orphans has risen as well due to the catastrophe. I was wondering if you have any idea or the means to help us out?"
Ms. Folia's plea sounds urgent. But Jessie had lost everything she knew and had that day as well. Her parents hadn't lived in the slums, and she herself grew up topside. Her father's comatose condition, which the Mako poisoning had left him in, made it necessary to care for him 24/7, and the medical treatments had sucked the Rasberry family dry financially anyway. Jessie had given every single Gil she could spare to help her parents out, and even though this became redundant now after losing them, opening up a new filtration system business from scratch wouldn't be easy and most likely take too much time. And the savings from her time at the Gold Saucer had long been gone by now too.
Gold Saucer! That might be a way to earn some quick Gil...Jessie contemplates.
She is still a well-respected actress and was the star of 'Lovelessā. Her poster hangs in the halls of Event Square to this day. And even better, she was still in contact with some of her former co-workers. Reaching out to them and asking for a possible comeback on stage wouldn't be a problem at all.
Jessieās grinning, āI think I know how to help. Let me reach out to some people.ā
A few days later, sheās back in Biggsā room, but not to check on him. She sits next to his bed, taking his hand like she has so many times before.
āSo, Iām going to be gone for a while. But I know you've got everything under control here.ā Her voice is warm, but her smile is bittersweet. āAnd Iāll be back, so donāt worry for a change, okay?ā
Jessie knows that if Biggs would wake up at this very moment, heād try to convince her to stay immediately. He would say that he would figure something out; the Leaf House is his responsibility after all. That itās not necessary to sell her soul to this bottomless pit of Mako consumption of a fun park. But itās time to pay back the hospitality she received.
And thereās also a part of her that misses being on stage, even though sheās usually in the center of attention wherever she goes anyway, theater or not. Acting has always been a way of escaping reality for her. Sure, the reasons for starting acting in the first place had been different, but when her fatherās incident happened just days before her debut as Rosa in āLovelessā, it granted her an easy escape from the cruel sides of life ever since. Maybe she wants to forget again. Forget about the bombs she made that killed innocent citizens, the collapsed plate that buried the Sector 7 slums underneath it, the lives lost - her parents, Wedge and many more.
And forget about Biggs. The concern if he will ever wake up again, the fear of having to tell him about Wedge, and so many other unspoken words she keeps to herself for so long already.
āIām not as good as you at taking responsibility, Biggs.ā She takes something out of her pocket and puts it in the hand she had been holding. She puts the chair she was sitting on back in its place by the desk and places another item on it, right next to Biggsā red Avalanche headband that had been lying there untouched ever since it had been removed to bandage him up. She takes a glance at him one last time, āSee you soon.ā Then sheās gone, and silence is the only thing that remains in the room.
Thereās childrenās laughter outside, though. A very familiar sound. I missed that sound, he thinks. A thought? It's been a while since I had one of those. Heās slowly opening his eyes, struggling with the brightness of the room. His head is spinning a little too, but memories are already starting to come back. Avalanche, the missions, the pillar of the plate, bullet wounds, blood, Cloudā¦Oh shit.

I'll be posting a picture of a scene for each chapter as well - mostly just quick drawings with just outlines.
And some shots from the games that I used for inspiration:
Chapter 2: On Stage / Show must go on
Nothing really changed around here, I see. Jessie realizes, standing on the moving band that takes her up to Event Square. Canāt wait to see everyone and the theater again.Ā
Sheās got an appointment with the owner to sign her new contract. She had always liked Dio, yes, heās pretty over the top most of the time, but he treats his employees well and is a real showman, who valued every single time she and her acting colleagues did a good job on stage.Ā
Two men in dark sunglasses and weird haircuts approached her as she was sitting on a bench in the waiting room backstage. They must be new. Jessie figures, since she's never seen them work here before.Ā
āYouāre the new girl? The boss is ready to see you now.ā one of them explains.
Strange that Dio is not coming to pick her up himself.Ā
āEhm, yes, that would be me.āĀ
āCommon then, weāre takinā you to him.ā The other guy says.
Something feels off here. Hopefully, Dio will have a suitable explanation for why he hired these suspicious guys.Ā
Jessie enters the room they guide her to, closely followed by the two guys. It's not Dioās usual bureau, in fact, sheās surprised by the entire decor in this very room. Wooden walls in a deep shade of red, satin lamps hanging from the ceiling and framing the walls. A big wooden desk in the center of the room catches her attention. Thereās a set of two chairs in front of it and one big armchair on the opposite side - itās red, of course. The person who must be sitting in the chair has turned their back towards the entering group of people, though.Ā
Thatās a lot of drama, even for Dio, Jessie thinks.Ā
āSoooo, youāre the new actress they hired for our most famous play?āĀ
Wait, whatās going on? Thatās not Dioās voice.Ā
āSitā¦ and we talk about your contract.ā With that, the person turns around in their armchair, and Jessie finally gets a look at whoās the person the other two referred to as the boss.Ā
No way! Jessieās at a loss for words for a second.
āDon Corneo?āĀ
Thereās no doubt about it. Don Corneo, the biggest name of the Wall Market of the Sector 6 slums, is sitting right in front of her. Everybody in the slums knows him, heās the worst creep one could imagine, but sadly, heās also nearly as powerful. Tifa had gone investigating on her own, when they heard Corneo send his lackeys to look for Barrett and other clues on Avalanche. But Jessie didnāt know how that turned out, since they never got the chance to talk about it afterwards. Corneo seems to be doing well though.
āOh my! Look at that cute birdie.ā Corneo chimes. āYouāll be selling us tickets like free materia.āĀ
Jessie canāt help but shudder. She really needs that money for the Leaf House though, everybody is counting on her. Corneo is not trustworthy, she knows that much, so being extra cautious is important here. Iām an actress, I can pull that off.Ā Ā
āThe play was really popular when I was playing the main, so I hope Iāll be able to make it a huge success again while Iām here.ā
āAh, yeahā¦now that you mention it.ā Corneo sports a grin that makes Jessie even more uncomfortable. āA few special appearances that were agreed on, wonāt do any good. Itās hard times, people want consistency.ā
āIām sorry, but I struggle to get what youāre trying to say.ā
āIām saying that I want you to perform until the play runs out in a few months. Iām kinda into romance myself, but it seems that everything has been set for a change of plays, and changing that again would cost a lot of moneyā¦āĀ
He still rambles on, but Jessie is already lost in thought. So, Iām supposed to stay here for months and work for Corneo? And if I refuse, Iāll basically get nothing. Thereās not even a real option here, is there?
āItās fine with me. Depending on the payment.ā Jessie musters to answer.
āOh, little Birdie, you should not worry. Expenses and Rooming are free. Salary is as agreed upon per performance, plus 1% of ticket sales.āĀ
Wow, thatās generous. Whereās the hook? She is sure there must be one, but in the end, she agrees nevertheless.Ā
āThank you for the generosity, and Iām hoping to meet your expectations.ā All Jessieās really hoping for is to finally be able to discard this personality for the day at least, sheās tired of pretending to cater to all of Corneoās wills. Youāll definitely meet my expectations, donāt worry, is what Corneo is smiling about mischievously, though and says, "Excellent! Kotch and Scotch will guide you to your room.āĀ
These are the names of his right hand men? Seriously? Nomen est Omen - your name really can be a premonition.Ā
---------------
It feels as if sheās never been away from the stage at all. Acting with people she still knows helps too, but itās mostly the familiarity of the place and material that makes her feel at home. Just a few more hours and sheāll have her debut. Wrong word. Of course itās not her first performance as Rosa, that was many years ago, but she still wants to dedicate it to her Fatherā¦and her Mother now, too. She had always supported her aspirations, she actually recently complained a little that Jessieās not been that focused on acting anymore. Little did she know that saving the planet with her buddies had become Jessieās number one goal. Jessie didnāt want to make her Mom worry even more, taking care of her Dad was straining enough, so she never told her about joining Avalanche in the first place.Ā
Iāll make you proud. All of you. This is for you, Dad, Mom, Wedge and all the other souls within the Lifestream. And for you too, Biggs.
Nothing but standing ovations and constant clapping in enjoyment - such different kinds of noises compared to those that she had gotten used to. It had been an overwhelming success. Every member of the cast and crew is overjoyed. Corneo even sent some bottles backstage to celebrate. Maybe heās not that bad of a person at all? What a stupid thought born out of excitement, she mentally notes.Ā
āHere you go.ā Jessie takes the glass of sparkling wine that has been handed to her by the actor who plays Alphred - the prince and her love interest. He resembles Cloud in appearance - blond hair, blue eyes.
āWe really missed you around here,ā another actor states. He plays a minor role of a fighter and rival to Alphred in the beginning, but never caught her attention until now. His black hair, brown eyes and kindness remind her of Biggs.Ā
āSalute!ā Everyone shouts in unison, and Jessie raises her glass too, but her mind has already wanderedā¦
--------------
The drinks are good, the best Jessie ever had, actually.Ā
āThanks for helping me figure out the menu.ā Tifa beams with joy.
āNo, Thank you for the free drinks. They're awesome. They'll surely be the hit of the bar.ā Biggs always makes sure to praise where it is due. Sometimes one starts wondering if it's all just an act, when people do that. A mask they put on to appear nice and likable, but Biggs is different. He's completely genuine and really means everything he says.Ā
āIt's really hard to decide on just one thoughā, Biggs says looking at the pile of glasses in front of them. They all had different colors - yellow, green, one even a bright shade of red.Ā
Jessie suddenly jumps off the stool she was sitting on, turns around, raises the glass of her current cocktail and triumphantly explains, āYep, this is the one!āĀ
Biggs and Tifa share a knowing look of amusement. That might have been one too many, Biggs thinks to himself.Ā
As soon as this thought had left his mind, Jessie stumbles a littleā¦Oh oh, that doesn't look good. She meanwhile exclaims loudly, āBartender! Whip me up another Costa del Soā...āĀ
I knew it. Biggs barely manages to catch Jessie in time when she loses her balance. She safely lands in his arms though, her back pressing against his chest. Her cheeks are a little red from drinking, and maybe from embarrassment, too. Itās just Biggs though, she reminds herself. He had seen me do worse.Ā
His grip on her arms to help steady her is firm, yet gentle. Jessie tilts her head upward, meeting Biggsā gaze. Heās watching her, concerned and worried. Be careful, or that wrinkle between your eyebrows will stay, she muses to herself. She starts to feel a little dizzy. Maybe itās the drinks? Orā¦? A sudden realization hit her. She was still in Biggsā arms, staring at him. Right into his dark brown eyes, which sometimes appear to be even black. Had they always had this mesmerizing effect on her? ā¦.Shoot!Ā
āI'm cutting you off.ā With a swift motion of his right hand, Biggs takes the glass that Jessie had still been holding and sets it back on the counter, interrupting her thoughts. His left arm is gently guiding her back to her seat. The moment is gone.Ā
āCāmon, one more couldnāt hurt.ā
-----------------
Heās not here to stop her from drinking now. Heād really been strict about her drinking habits, even though he himself ended up drunk most times as well. So annoying! Itās nice that he worries, though, Jessie reminds herself, smiling bittersweetly.Ā
āCheers!!ā Her colleagues raise their glasses for another toast, and the memory is gone.Ā
---------------
The pain is still there occasionally, but he tries to ignore it the best he can. He hates it if heās making others worry, despite the fact that heās constantly worrying about others. Now especially.Ā
His whole life got turned upside down after he woke up two weeks ago. Not that it hadnāt been before, but now itās even worse.Ā
There was no amnesia, just big black question marks about what happened while he was unconscious. And then he received messages, heād rather forget again. No turning back at this point, though.Ā
He misses Wedge. Constantly. He wasnāt able to understand what he was holding in his hand, when he woke upā¦So he wouldn't have thought that itās the only thing thatās left of him - the red Bandana Wedge was wearing. Later, he understood that it was Jessie, who gave it to him. Jessie. One of her gloves had been placed on the desk of the room he was resting in.Ā
A sign that she was still alive? That she was thinking about him? That she was coming back?
All of these thoughts didnāt matter anymore when he received that one particular letterā¦
...but also loved Jessie and Biggs to pieces then as well šš...what if they survived, the planet has been saved and they had a daughter? Here you go !! Don't think I ever gave her a name but I'm open for suggestions š (maybe Hope, or Faith or ...?)
Found my "old" (Remake era) drawing of Biggs š I think I got a little discouraged to continue/make a story after the sector 7 plate incident š¤«š«
Biggs thinking Jessie is not nice enough - he gets the paycheck right away šš
But seriously, their banter and way of (very touchy) arguing goes way beyond a mere friendship, I'd say. šš¤š¤«
Jessie also doesn't behave like this around others ever. Yes, she's very flirty with Cloud (Wedge says that's just a game of her & on top she's an actress) but never seems this unhinged/true to herself around anybody else. š

"I won't say that it was fate, I won't say that it was destiny."
I sit next to Tifa and hold her hand as we watch Aerith perform her song using the VR, both Tiffa and I teary eyed after watching jessies performance for the first time. As I listen to to her voice i think back to my time with jessie, wedge, and Biggs.
"Till the day that we meet again, Where or when I wish i could say but believe, know that you'll find me."
I remember how I first met Biggs back in sector 5 in the abandon church, I waited for Aerith as small child came in and kept me company till he came in I remember the relief that washed over his face when he saw the child safe. He even walked me to my home in sector 7 since he was headed in that direction, there was never a moment he wasn't a gentlemen. Already being acquainted with Tifa just made us closer.
Seventh heaven two months before the pillar fell
"You gonna make or are you gonna continue to make us all suffer through your puppy love crush on Biggs?" Jessie teases me as she watches me watch biggs I sigh at her teasing jokes knowing she means well "jess its not that simple I don't wanna ruin our friendship" I say quietly right as Biggs and wedge walk towards us. Oh how i wish i just told him the truth but how could I know what would happen.
Seventh Heaven one month before the pillar fell
Wedge had locked Biggs and I in the Seventh Heaven storage closet, Biggs stood over me trying to give me space but given the lack of room in the closet, close proximity was inevitable. "uh sorry I can't really move any further" biggs says as he places his hands against the door my back was to "no its fine I understand" i say as I avoid making eye contact. It had been 10 minutes since wedge left us in this awkward state "Hey I was wonderi-" right before Biggs could finish Wedge pushed the door open sending biggs and I forward falling to the ground when i open my eyes i see biggs face inches from my own and myself on top of biggs my face immediately flushing before I can say anything i here the click of a camera and I turn to see Jessie holding a camera "JESSIE!" both Biggs and I yelled. I still can't believe Jessie got Wedge in on her plan.
Biggs apartment one week before the pillar fell
After a rough run with some fiends I sit on Biggs bathroom counter as he cleans some scraps on my knees when he gets to a deep gash on my thigh he tried to get a shard of glass causing me to yelp in pain. "hold on a little longer pretty girl" Biggs says focused on the gash "pretty gir- FUCK BIGGS!" I try to question him but he pours a little alcohol on the wound causing me bite my lip hard as he finishes patching me up he looks at my now bleeding lip like he wanted to say something but stops himself. Why didn't I say something?
Topside two days before the plate fell
Jessie handed us parachutes one for cloud and wedge to share and one for Biggs and I to share saying that she feared I'd get lost and that Biggs would watch out for me, maybe this was her way of trying to make up for that awkward dinner with her mother and having Biggs act like her boyfriend. After we jumped down I can't help but admire the beautiful view "Its gorgeous" I quietly say and I hear Biggs agree not knowing we were talking about different views. After we finally land it was just our luck we were tangled in the parachute after a few minutes of struggling we lay there laughing at our predicament it was like an unspoken agreement to just enjoy the moment. What I would give to relive that night.
Sector 7 right before the plate would fall
It was chaos, Tifa had gone to wall market Cloud was still missing everyone was running all neighborhood watch members and Avalanche were either evacuating people or going to the plate control tower. Biggs sees me and grabs me and pulls me close "evacuate as many people as you can and get away from here." he says as he looks at me before grabbing the back of my neck and pull me into a kiss i immediately kiss back fearing the moment he pulls away. When he pulls away I look at him understanding he didn't think he was coming back to me "promise me you'll make it out safely?" I say to him as he looks at me with sorrow in his eyes but doesn't respond "Biggs please promise me!" I can't help but raise my voice in desperation he closes his eyes before silently nodding "I promise I'll make it back to you always" Biggs ran towards the control tower and I lost a piece of myself in that moment knowing the truth. I didn't see him again till I followed Cloud up the tower I fell to my knees next to him as Cloud left us be, tears welled in my eyes "hey pretty girl don't cry" Biggs says in a hushed tone as he brushes the tears away. "you promised Biggs you can't leave me alone, we can get you out of here please" I say as i place my hand on his he only gives me a sad face and shakes his head before kissing me one last time and he calls to one of the neighborhood watch men telling them to get me to safety I refuse and try to pull away from them as they try to take me away from Biggs. "Im not leaving you alone Biggs! please just a little longer" they comply with my request till they decide we can't stay any longer they forcibly remove me taking me to safety. I should have stayed with him.
"take my hand and believe we can be together evermore."
Once Aerith Finishes her song green mist appears and in the corner of my eyes I swear I see him, I look again and see Biggs standing there smiling at me. "still my pretty girl." as i take my glasses off I smile sadly as tears drip down my face "always and forever your pretty girl"
