November 2023 Games Played Retrospective
Still a little late, but not as late as last time!! Have my monthly games played retrospective for last month :]
November 2023 I played 15 unique games, many only a handful of times, and many more only once. Here’s my top three by plays for November!
Orion Duel (4 Plays)
I played this one online a handful of times before I got into my solo game phase of the month. It’s still a fun one, I just need to readjust my strategies and thought processes if I want to actually see myself getting any wins again LOL. It has been a hot minute since I’ve been able to pull off a win haha.
Retrograde (4 Plays)
Probably the one I’ve had the most fun with these last few days. It’s an easy solo game to play, though I do find myself craving to play it multiplayer again soon. I’m a sucker for how easy it is to roll those dice and cross off aliens I think. Definitely going to keep playing this one however I’m able to <3
Under Falling Skies (4 Plays)
I think I’ve got the easy basic set up for this game down—I’m able to win in a decent amount of time, so I figured I’d challenge myself with tougher difficulties. Golly, is it a challenge indeed! I have yet to win on any higher difficulties with this game, but it’s engaging enough that I don’t mind trying over and over again.
Other Honorable Mentions and Going Forward
Other honorable mentions include Backgammon (3 plays), Chomp (3 plays), and The Oregon Trail Card Game (3 plays). Games I played once include Martian Dice, Qawale, Quantik, Quarto, Quibbles, and Yoxii.
Last month I played sporadically more than anything, and by the end of the month wanted to get a few plays in for some solo games I physically owned (I had played a few throughout the month as well). In November, I played Retrograde (4 plays), Under Falling Skies (4 plays), Chomp (3 plays) and Cosmoctopus (2 plays).
For December, I have a fair sized list of games I’d like to get and try out physically, including games like Spicy, Control, and Cat in the Box.
I’m also curious about some traditional playing card card games as well actually, like Hearts and Spades and Euchre and Rummy. I’m hoping to try them out online and physically if I’m able!!
Let’s see what December brings for board game playing!!

October 2023 Games Played Retrospective
A bit late for this one, isn’t it? Things got hectic, but I still wanted to give an update on what I played in October!
I played 36 unique games—most more than once, some much more than once. I played a lot of new-to-me games that were abstract strategy games, plus some familiar strategy games like Chess. Here’s my top three by plays for the month of October!!
Draftosaurus (31 plays)
I spent the first third of my October playing lots of winter mode Draftosaurus! I got pretty good at that mode. I think I’m even better at it than I am at the summer mode board 😂😂 will have to try summer/winter mode some more some time, it looks like a good way to lengthen the gameplay time and get some more strategic thinking in there!
Kalah (25 plays)
I had a brief Kalah/Mancala obsession this month along my path of discovering new abstract strategy games to play—then I got into Oware as well, and hope to learn Bao and Omweso soon too with the apps and websites I found for them!!
Martian Dice (22 plays)
Still a favorite of mine, though I played this one mostly in the first half of the month. I like playing it with my friends especially—it’s a good game to play and chat in the chat box to. And the theme is just so cute and funny lol, I love that we’re abducting cows, chickens, and humans to figure out which one is in charge lol!
Other Honorable Mentions and Going Forward
Other honorable mentions include Fluxx (20 plays), Quibbles (18 plays), and Orion Duel (17 plays). Games I played once include Backgammon, Dorfromantik: the Board Game, Hokito, Homeworlds, Love Letter: Premium Edition, Punderdome, the Royal Game of Ur, and Yoxii.
In my last retrospective, I wanted to play more Fluxx, Forest Shuffle, Forbidden Island and Pandemic over the course of October—and I managed to play all of them at least a bit save for Pandemic!
I also wanted to play more solo games irl from my collection, and this month I focused on Chomp, a dinosaur tile laying game.
I also also wanted to explore more new-to-me and free games on BGA, and got to play a bit of Orion Duel, Can’t Stop, Trio, boop., Hokito, Quarto, Yoxii, Kalah, Backgammon, Quantik, and Reversi/Othello, of which nine (9!!) are free on BGA!!
In the last two days of November, I think I want to focus still on my solo irl games and see how many plays I can get in on those :] Probably won’t be a lot, but I wanna get a few plays in anyway!!

Studying game rules so I can teach a board game accurately takes up so much reading brain power but it is gonna be sooo worth it when I get to play new games with people I haven’t played games with before

New to Me Games: Quantik on BGA
A short game that reminds me a bit of Quarto, published by the same company and everything. There are differences, of course, like the shapes (cones, cylinders, cubes and spheres) and some placement rules, and there are two ways to win—by getting four in a row or an entire corner occupied, all of different shapes. You don't pick your pieces for your opponent like Quarto has you do, either, so I suppose the resemblance to Quarto is primarily aesthetic 😂
But it was an interesting little game either way! It plays super quick, but still requires some thought when you're playing. I played one match and lost, perhaps because I didn't remember that I could fill up a corner to win too and my opponent ended up filling it up first!
If I play this again, I'll definitely have to go in and remember that I'm not playing a Quarto game. It might be hard to find someone to play with though—it looks like this game has less players on BGA than Quarto does!

My valiant chess effort resulted in a loss… but I made it pretty far with dwindling down my opponent’s pieces!! I played white. Whomp whomp 😂😂

New to Me Games: The Royal Game of Ur
Got an android app to play this one after seeing the one big video of two people playing it and it did not disappoint!!
The Royal Game of Ur is a little race game in which you’re trying to get your seven pieces off your path on the board before your opponent does. Along the way you run into rosettes that give you extra dice rolls and opportunities to knock your opponent’s pieces off the board (unless, of course, they’re on the one center rosette that you can’t knock anyone out of!). Each turn you roll four four-sided dice and move 0-4 spaces depending on how many white points vs black points you roll. Yep, sometimes you have to pass your turn because you roll a zero.
(Trust me, it gets funnier the more the game goes on and the more you desperately need something that isn’t a zero 😂😂)
I like the four-sided dice and imagine that it would be even more fun to roll physical dice while playing the physical game! Definitely going to keep an eye out for this one. Definitely going to try and play the app version more, too, because it was just too dang fun by the end of it!!
We played one match, and I lost by one piece—it was neck-and-neck for a lot of the game until the very end, and I will get a rematch one day, I swear it!! 😂😂
Until then, there’s plenty of other games to play!

New to Me Games: Backgammon on BGA
Another game that technically isn’t new new to me, as I had a backgammon set when I was a kid… I just never learned the rules to play it and played stuff like chess instead. But now I’ve learned backgammon and I really regret not playing it sooner! It’s a fun little game. An interesting piece of gaming history, tbh
I’ve only played one game so far, and it was a wild ride, let me tell you. If you don’t know backgammon, it’s an abstract game wherein you’re trying to move all your pieces to your area of the board (by rolling dice) and then you’re trying to bear them off completely so they’re no longer on the board. The first person to do this wins the game, or you can play with multiple rounds depending on how long you want the game to last.
I had some pretty good beginner’s luck in getting all my pieces to my corner of the board… save for one which was stuck for the longest time in my opponent’s corner! I kept rolling and rolling until finally I broke through my opponent’s barricade and got that piece where it needed to be.
After that, all my pieces were pretty much on the last two points of my area, so every roll of mine pretty much worked in my favor to bear pieces off of the board. I actually won, which I wasn’t expecting to happen! It was really exciting.
I definitely have plans to play this later with friends now that I have the basics down… maybe even some family, since I mentioned it and one family member showed me a backgammon app he played right after I mentioned learning the rules dbdbdn
We shall see! For now, backgammon sets are super tempting me… mine is lost, probably in the same place my lost mancala set is. Maybe when the holiday season rolls around I’ll debate about asking the family for a nicer looking backgammon set. Who knows!

Played some more solo Chomp because solo game sessions are calming and nice :)
Scored pretty low this time tho… didn’t meet half the goal cards (see below) because of the luck of the card tiles I suppose!

(Left tiles unmet, right tiles met)
I think I like the scavenger cards from the expansion better than the flyer ones! I’ll have to see how the expansion plays with multiplayer one of these days. I’m curious how it compares with the multiplayer base game!
