Ever since Funny Girl’s Broadway revival had been announced, Rachel had regretfully spun herself into a neurotic mess of a woman. Judge all you want but it was justified considering she’d been dreaming about this big break ever since she could remember. Seriously. She fondly recalled being able to tap into the emotional intensity of Barbra’s career-defining “My Man” before she could even sing the alphabet. Now here she was, just shy of two decades later, on the glorious precipice of seizing the role she was born to play. It was hers, all she had to do was do what she did best. Of course, that was easier said than done, especially when she got caught up in all the finicky logistics of her audition. Like what song should she sing? Naturally, a Streisand classic is what came to mind during her earlier stages of preparation, but after receiving feedback from Shelby, that was quickly vetoed due to its lack of originality and nuance. Even though she had spent her whole childhood and adolescent years idolizing Barbra, she agreed that they weren’t looking for a carbon copy of a talent that was so once in a life time. The casting directors were looking for someone that could bring a sense of freshness and new life to the part, and Rachel Berry would be damned if she weren’t the one to do it.
But the question remained: what song? She had tirelessly mulled over every number she had mastered in her repertoire (which you can imagine was extremely extensive) but nothing seemed to fit. It wasn’t until it was less than a week until her audition and she had called Finn in desperation for some guidance from the person who knew her better than anyone. Just as she had figured, he provided her with what she would consider perfect advice. “Do something that takes you back to the roots of your passion,” He had told her, and lo and behold, that’s exactly what she did.
Don’t Stop Believing. It wasn’t the first song their mismatched group of six aspiring hopefuls had sung together, but it was the first time Rachel really felt like she had belonged to something special. Performing it years later at her very first Broadway audition had truly felt like an out of body experience, yet it somehow also grounded her because she could feel the presence of her lifelong friends, backing her and cheering her on. Of course she mostly meant that figuratively but admittedly, there were moments where she swore she could hear the sweet vocal backup stylings of Kurt and Tina, or Mercedes’ earth shattering high notes, or even Artie’s artistically placed guitar solo. Most of all though, when she looked back, she saw Finn, beaming at her proudly from behind the drum set with a look that seemed to scream “you got this. I know you do.”
It was so transcendent that even one of the casting directors had taken notice. When questioned on what had happened to her in the middle of the song, Rachel stood tall and simply explained that she’d been thinking of her friends, and that she wouldn’t be where she was today had they never believed in her.
The second she stepped out of the theatre, Rachel reached for her phone to call Finn. She smiled to herself when he picked up after the first ring, barely missing a beat. “Finn, I sang Don’t Stop Believing.” Always one for theatrics, she paused to allow the gravity of that declaration sink in, since she knew that daring move would especially resonate with Finn. “I really thought about what you said about how I shine my brightest when I perform something that’s deeply personable to me and I couldn’t think of a song more suited for that. And I know this is going to sound crazy, because it is crazy, but it felt like you were all up there in your matching red t-shirts and converse, singing it with me. It was magical and something I’ll never forget, and even if it doesn’t land me the role then that’s okay because I know I took a chance by paying homage to the people I owe everything to. I wouldn’t even have this opportunity if it weren’t for them, and you, especially you, Finn. So, thank-you.”

If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, its yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be. Finn had read that in a book.... yeah, a book, it was crazy to him too. Finn Christopher Hudson was out here reading. He felt like he was slowly maturing, becoming more and more the man he wanted to be. And for the first time in his life, he felt a calm within himself. He wasn't worried about where he was or where he was going anymore. Of course he wasn't exactly doing perfectly, school was hard,  but he had a strong amount of hope for himself. And things where how he wanted them to be. Rachel and him were in a better place now, it also helped that she and Brody weren't a thing anymore. It wasn't that he didn't want Rachel to be happy, but something about Brody had just rubbed him the wrong way the entire time. But no matter what, he'd probably always be jealous of anyone Rachel was dating. But he'd like to think that the next time he wouldn't end up beating the shit out of the guy Rachel was dating... Unless he absolutely deserved it. And no matter what people thought, it wasn't to defend Rachel's honor or anything. No she could do that perfectly herself, she might be tiny. But never underestimate Rachel Berry's ability to tear you apart with her words.
Which he kind of had expected her to do after the Brody thing, but she hadn't. Which had been nice, even though he knew he kind of deserved it. He was just glad him and Rachel were moving into a better place, where they could be friends. That's what they had been at first, even though there had always been something between them. In a way, Rachel was and had always been his best friend. Guiding him when he was lost, been there for him. Weather they had been romantically involved or not. Rachel Berry was his best friend. He wouldn't tell Puck that though.
Finn bit his lip waiting for Rachel to speak and he almost lost his breath as she revealed her song choice. "What?" he let out in a breath of disbelief. With the exception of "You're The One That I Want", which he didn't really count, "Don't Stop Believing" was the first song they performed together. Their first full fledged number. And it made Finn's heart beat a little bit faster that, that, was the song she had chosen to perform. She really took his advice and just knocked it out of the park. But in a way, that made sense to him. They had always worked best, when they put their heads together. Finn let out a laugh as she talked, and wondered if Rachel could sense the blush on his face through the phone. Their red shirts.
Finn almost didn't know what to say, but he gathered himself. "I love that. That we were up there with you... Do I still look good in the red shirt?" he said with a tiny smirk on his face. "Of course, you're going to get it Rachel. I can... I can see it so clearly. You up there, performing your heart out. With that smile on your face, knowing that you're killing it and having a great time doing it. The producers and casting directors would be fools not to pick you."
"And hey, thank you! I was actually thinking about it before you called. How my life has been shaped the way it has. How I got here, studying to become a teacher. That wouldn't have happened if you hadn't been there for me. Guiding me, believing in me when I didn't. No matter if we were together or not, you were always there for me. Always had my back, always was a really good friend... I think we both worked best in life when we put our heads together, y'know? And head each other’s backs. So thank you too. And just know how ridiculously proud of you I am Rach. The next time I’m coming to New York, I’m coming there to celebrate you." Finn said with the biggest smile on his face, he felt so incredibly good right now, hearing Rachel so happy.

two worlds → 001.
Finn looked up from his notebook and over to the clock in his dorm room, Rachel could be calling him any minute now and telling him how her audition went. It wasn't that he was nervous for her, he knew she had this. Sure she had choked before, during her NYADA audition. But Finn knew that wouldn't happen now. She was born to be a big star on Broadway, she was prepared for this. No, Finn was more excited to just hear how it went, to hear Rachel's excitement through the phone and to talk to her again. He loved her. Always had, always would.
But for the moment they were living in two different worlds, and for the first time in a long time, he accepted that. It didn't matter, in the end, he had meant what he had said at Mr. Schue's wedding. They were going to end up together, that was just how it was going to go. And if that was tomorrow or ten years from now or anything in between, that was okay.
Now his biggest focus was school and the glee club. Him and Will had squared up and they were back to co-directing the glee club together. He finally felt a sense of calm in him, the dust had settled. He had spent so long, not knowing what he was going to do with his life, where he would end up. But it all made so much sense now, of course he was going to become a teacher. Ironic, since he himself wasn't the greatest at school. He didn't know what kind of teacher he was going to be yet, but he was leaning towards history. Turns out, history was actually really interesting. It was basically just like a really really long movie.
Suddenly he heard his phone ringing on the bed and he basically leapt from his chair over to the bed. The display read “Rachel”, and Finn hit the answer button and put his phone up to his ear. “Hey!” He said really excited. “Tell me how it went!” Finn said before Rachel even got a word in, it usually was the other way around.
