AP STUDIO ART TIPS

Hey there! I took this class last year and have some things I think would have been helpful to hear. 

1. Don’t rush taking pictures of your art!! When you go to take pictures to upload to your online portfolio, make sure they’re the best they can be. Borrow a good camera from the school- ask your art, photography, newspaper, yearbook teachers, a media center specialist- there’s bound to be a nice camera that they’ll let you use. If you can, bring your own SD card to take the photos on, and take multiple photos of each piece. Also- make sure you’ve got nice lighting!

2. Talk to your classmates (If you have them, ha)! Art is obviously a personal experience, but if another kid in your class says that a head isn’t proportional or your pieces don’t convey your message, listen to them. In the same vein, if they say something looks amazing, LISTEN TO THEM! No one will gain anything from lying about your art looking good! And I’ve been there, thinking something sucks even though multiple people say it’s great. The thing is, a lot of the time when we go to create something we have a vision in our minds of what we want- and most of the time we aren’t able to reach that goal. But when other people look at your art, they don’t see that. They see what you’ve created instead of what you didn’t. So when someone says that a piece is good, BELIEVE THEM. It’s true. 

3. Take art with you everywhere you go. Create all the time. My concentration changed three different times over the course of the year. I was still able to create all my pieces because I was always thinking about art, always drawing sketches for more pieces, ideas or phrases of inspiration that I’d think of in the middle of Lit or while watching tv. There’s quote by Maya Angelou that’s really true: “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Let art consume you! It’s great! It’s beautiful! It lets you speak in a way nothing else can. 

4. Practice Practice Practice Practice Practice Practice. In the same vein, it’s hard to speak if you can’t form words. If you want to make a piece with a cat in it but can’t paint fur very well, don’t just accept it! WORK on it! Look up different techniques! Famous pet portraits! And for gods sake, practice! This is hard to do, but you have to work hard to do well. 

5. Have fun :) It’s going to suck, you might cry, get addicted to caffeine, start bringing a waffle maker to school with you, get the intense urge to throw away every piece of art you’ve ever made, but those all pass! (except the caffeine addiction. That’s there to stay). This may be one of the last art classes you take, depending on what you study in college or if you go. You’ll be with other students who love art as much as you do, and be able to work on art that matters to YOU. It can be an incredible experience if you push through the pain.

to all kids taking AP studio art this school year

- do not fucking slack off - have breadth work already made. you’ll probably have to go back to your junior (and even sophomore and freshman) year for breadth pieces - make an effort to make at least 3 pieces a month. if you approach like 3 weeks on a piece and its still not done, move on - have a buddy who goes at the same pace as you. its so awful to feel alone in AP. if anything just find someone to be your buddy - if possible, make a piece or two during your winter break. being one piece ahead when you start AP will make you feel like you accomplished something - think of your statement. think real hard about it. presentation of your hard work is just as important as the work itself - please dont slack off or fall behind. my lack of motivation is what hurt me the most during AP, i feel

i didnt follow a lot of these examples but still managed a 5 on the exam. that doesnt mean that everyone else has the ability to pull that off. please love yourselves and be smart about AP. thank you

i cant believe this. i cant fucking believe this. i meant to send this to my boyfriend but instead i sent it to my boss right after i told her i was quitting all i wanted to do was make an inappropriate cookie joke but no i got mixed up texting two people at once and literally sent a picture of a chocolate chip cookie captioned “ooh she thique” to the fifty year old suburban mother of two of whom i have nothing but a strictly professional relationship with. after knowing me for almost a year and a half as a hard working and respectable employee this is the last thing i will ever say to her i can never go back to that shop again all because of this god damn cookie blunder What have i Done
