Getting through the checkpoints back to West Berlin is tedious: Eris has to wait in line for nearly forty minutes before presenting his papers. But his hands don’t shake, and he emerges from the Hauptbahnhof as if he is the same man who entered it a week before.

When he reaches his flat, Frau Heller’s door opens. He pastes on a tired smile – such a hard-working young man he is! – and he says dutifully, “Happy New Year, Frau Heller. Did your son come for Christmas?”

“Yes, him and his pretty new girlfriend, the ballerina. Did you know she danced Clara two weeks ago with the Staatsballett? Mäx didn’t even know she danced before then. He’s so busy, you know, so little free time.”

“I’m sure,” Eris murmurs. Mäx is Eris’s age and tragically stupid, even for a lawyer. They met precisely once at a party, and Eris left with Mäx’s then-girlfriend. Good to hear he’s moved on.

Eris tugged on the bond until Azriel came close again, peppering kisses along his mates’ jawline and down his neck. Without warning he let his entire body weight fall on top of Eris who let out a strangled cry. Azriel only laughed, rolling off him quickly as Eris pinched him miserably.  “Come here.” He said quietly, pulling Eris to him. When the male was safely tucked into his arms Azriel buried his face into that pale neck and began humming softly. The song was nonsensical at first but morphed slowly into one of the lullabies he had sung to the kids as babies. Azriel and Layla used to sit in the nursery taking turns teaching each other songs their mothers used to sing to them and as that memory lay over Azriel’s mind like a warm blanket, Azriel felt a tear slip down his cheek.  Eris, who had been watching him out of the corner of his eyes, turned and kissed the tear away. He took his arms and circled them around his mate, kissing the top of his dark curls.

Their kissing was unhurried. Azriel moved from Eris’ lips to his neck as he laid him gently back on the pillows, tasting him completely.  After a while, it slowed until they were just holding each other. Eris’ back was pressed tightly against Azriel’s bare chest, the sounds of their breathing accompanying their rapid heartbeats.  The words Azriel knew he needed to say were heavy on the back of his tongue but he couldn’t get them out, afraid of ruining this perfect moment. Somehow, he realized Eris already knew and was just waiting for Azriel to tell him. Still, the words wouldn’t come.  Azriel let his wing curve around the top of them, shivering as Eris’ breath ghosted over the inside of it. The High Lord’s breathing was slow and heavy as he drifted off to sleep and Azriel counted each one as he exhaled, thankful for them all.  “I love you.” He whispered in Eris’ ear. When Eris was fast asleep Azriel pressed his mouth gently on the tip of his pointed ear and added. “Mate.”

Anyone else thinking about Kevin’s insistence they eat healthy with a new understanding after reading about how the Ravens lived? I bet he was a REAL joy to live with his first few months there, especially given Andrew’s sweet tooth. Was Jean actually the first person to throw away Andrew’s drawer of candy bars?

“No.” Eris anchored his hold on Azriel as magic began to stir around them. “Let me be the one who is sorry this time but please… please don't run.”  Confused and terrified, Azriel did as Eris asked and stayed where he was. Slowly, like a veil being lifted, Azriel’s senses came alive and Eris’ scent grew so strong that Azriel had to suppress a moan.  “What are you doing?” He asked, the words barely audible.  “Just lifting the damper on what I've been suppressing every time I am around you. I ... I didn’t want you to know.”  A wave of Eris’ arousal filled Azriel’s nose, the intensity overwhelming him. He quickly buried his face in the crook of Eris’ neck to stifle the throaty whines threatening to escape.  “Eris.” he began, unsure of what he was even begging for in the first place. “Please.”
