This is really boring and I don't like any of the characters but I gotta say most of the girls have some baseline moe appeal to where if you were reading the VN I could imagine wanting to do their route but I literally hate Makoto so fucking much that I cannot even conceive of trying hers unless you're going for 100% completion or something she's literally so awful

Finally got around to watching this! For how excited I was for it (even though I took fucking forever to actually watch lol) it didn't quite blow my world away, unfortunately. I think this movie felt... misguided, perhaps? Like there was a clear thing that the writers wanted to do, which they absolutely refused to compromise on. But when it came to building a cohesive story around that thing, and especially creating engaging themes, they just kinda flopped a bit. It ends up feeling very disparate as a result - a 90 minute proof of concept. They couldn't really turn their cool idea into a coherent whole. Which is a bummer. The final stretch of the movie is also just a little odd - it brings things together sort of well, but without giving story details away it definitely feels like they didn't quite know how to work up to this point.
But, moving past that, you can see I still rated it positively, and that's because the movie's pretty fun! It feels surprisingly western in its sensibilities - the bullied kids with their secret hideout and group name and nicknames go on a coming-of-age adventure, out in the wild without parents for the first time, walkie-talkies equipped, a goal in sight but detours the whole way through, big group fight with an emotional resolution, sights they'd never see anywhere else. It's entertaining in a very classical sort of way. Couple extra bits of story and recurring iconography used as thematic and narrative devices add some pretty good flavour to the whole piece. Characters are likeable, visuals are pretty solid, some of the music's good although if I ever watch this I'm skipping the twinkle twinkle little star scene lmao. There's unrealised potential you can see while watching the movie but it's fun enough to at least entertain you for 90 minutes. Sometimes that's enough. Theeeeeeeeeeee end.
