For someone who didn’t take much seriously, Xander couldn’t really find a single thing humorous about the situation. She had known this entire time and never bothered to mention it. In a way he couldn’t blame her - how could he not remember? He hadn’t known Lyla for long but he knew that she wasn’t exactly like his previous conquests; in fact, she was nothing like them.
Xander fucked up. Big time.
“You hired me despite…you just - you could have told me,” his voice softened slightly at the end, his eyes still watching her intently. It would’ve made a difference, especially now that Xander knew her better than he had in LA; hell, they hadn’t really known each other in LA. His memory was hazy given the fact that he had probably been high on something at the time, but he remembered bits.
He remembered more than her favorite drink and her reason for being in town. He remembered her favorite dish, color, and where she saw herself in ten years. And despite being high, he knew that she wouldn’t just be another conquest for the books…at least Xander didn’t want her to be.
Yeah, he really fucked up.
“I’m sorry,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair. An apology was the least she deserved. The truth might have made a different - no, it would make a difference - but Xander didn’t bother. The damage was done. “I wasn’t exactly in the best state back then. I’m not saying that’s an excuse or anything but…I really am sorry, Lyla.”
He wondered if it was too soon to offer a chance to make it up to her. Even if he did so, would she accept? He went for it anyway.
“How can I make it up to you? Overtime without the pay? I could help out around here…I don’t think I’ve actually read a book in a few years but the internet is a huge help,” he offered, a small smile on his face.

For someone who never really had to work a day in their life, Xander was actually enjoying his new job. He’d only had it for a little over a month now but he didn’t mind the labor as much as he thought he would. Cleaning boats wasn’t ideal, especially during the winter, but it provided him with a much needed distraction throughout the day. There was also the whole getting paid factor, which was kind of important now since he no longer had access to his families money. The company wasn’t too bad either. Lyla Goodwin was something else, that much he knew. She wasn’t the most talkative person around but she was slowly starting to open up. Xander wasn’t exactly shy when it came to women but for some reason he found himself being more laid back around the blonde. It’s not that he didn’t find her attractive, of course he did, he just knew that Lyla was…well, different from his previous conquests. Or so he thought. Xander had a rather serious epiphany the night before while having drinks with Sage and swamping stories from their time out of Rockport. Said serious epiphany had to do with his new boss, which is why Xander found himself storming into the Book Nook bright and early instead of sleeping in like he normally would’ve done so on his day off. “Why did you tell me about LA?” he asked, as he made his way to the register where Lyla was. “After you hired me at the docks I said you looked familiar,” he continued, lowering his voice when another woman nearby began eyeing him oddly, “I knew I wasn’t just making that up. When you were on vacation in LA we had drinks and…things.”

bad habits | nadiya & xander
The past few months had gone by a lot smoother than Xander thought they would. After his little stunt in Los Angeles four months ago, returning to Rockport was the last thing on his mind; In fact, Xander knew the moment he left home that the chances of him returning were slim to none, especially once he fell into the party scene. And while he wasn't having much trouble staying out of crazy parties lately (mainly because there were none in the small town), Xander was having a bit of trouble breaking old habits.
When he wasn't working or spending his time with Tommy and Sage, he found himself at Honest Abe's Tavern. Drinking was one of the habits he had yet to break but it was one of the few he, surprisingly, had under control. So what if he was one of the only people at the bar at 3pm? At least he wasn't drunk...yet.
Feeling the cold breeze of the Winter air along his back, Xander's gaze wandered towards the entrance hoping that maybe it was a Reynolds coming into excite the bar atmosphere. He was wrong, so wrong. Walking into the bar was none other than one of his bad habits, Nadiya Anrick. It had been nearly a year since he'd last seen her in LA - everything had changed after Jason died. Everything.
Xander hadn't realized he was staring at the women until she locked eyes with him. She looked just as surprised, if not maybe mortified before turning around and making her way out of the bar. "Nadiya!" he called after her, but she was already out the door. Xander stood quickly, pulling a $20 out of his pocket and tossing it on the counter before taking off after the brunette.
"Nadiya!" he called again, managing to catch up with her in the middle of the empty parking lot. "Are you seriously just going to pretend like I'm not here?" he asked, walking beside her now. He knew this little reunion wasn't easy for her, regardless how indifferent she currently seemed. Unfortunately for Nadiya, there was no way he could ignore her.

Embrace your differences and the qualities about you that you think are weird. Eventually, they’re going to be the only things separating you from everyone else.
