Ezra to Morrigan: don’t let anyone treat you like an option
Ezra: you’re inevitable— a horror beyond comprehension, an omen, a threat.

Yet another Silverborn delay has unfortunately happened, hopefully it's the last one. Here are the latest dates:
September 25th, 2024 -> October 30th, 2024 for Australia
It’s currently still September 26th, 2024 for the United Kingdom, but I honestly expect that to change as well…
The January 28th, 2025 date for America remains unchanged

pre-courage square wundersmith headcanons
odbuoy has a horrible wispy facial hair thing going on from ages thirteen to fifteen that he refuses to shave the entire time
elodie uses her entire allowance from the society on suits and then bribes and borrows from ezra and owain when she needs anything else
brilliance uses masquerade to disguise herself so she can go out to the club without being recognised. which goes well until she finds the children sneaking out using the same thing, at which point it turns into a spiderman point thing
owain likes to hang out in the areas where the junior scholars are to see what they get up to in the society
ezra messes up with one of the wundrous arts when he's twelve and suffers having mustard hair for a week

Best Jupidad Moments #1 Nevermoor - Ch 3 - The First Meeting
Figured I’d start to collate some of these in an attempt to analyse what it is that makes this the most beautiful father/daughter dynamic in fiction.
Herewith my ramblings (you have been warned…)
He stood with his feet wide apart and hands stuffed into trouser pockets, leaning casually against the doorframe as if he had spent half his life standing in that spot and couldn’t think of a place he felt more at home. As if he himself owned Crow Manor and the Crows were merely his dinner guests.
His eyes locked on to Morrigan’s. He grinned. ‘Hello, you.’
There’s something about how he says “you” here, rather than saying her name. It’s so familiar, so personal and it straightaway elevates her to the most important person in the room - he doesn’t NEED to say her name, it is obvious she is why he is there. It’s all about her now (whereas 5 mins ago even her ‘last meal’ was painfully NOT about her at all).
And he grins, probably nobody has ever looked at her and seemed happy before and I get the impression that people usually avoid looking at her at all (ref the fact she isn’t allowed to make eye contact). I feel this must be part of why she so quickly trusts him because he’s the first person ever to give her the impression her existence is a positive thing.
‘Mourn the death of your daughter?’ echoed Jupiter. He took two deliberate steps towards Corvus and paused, his eyes glittering. The hairs on Morrigan’s arms stood up. Jupiter’s voice dropped an entire octave, and he spoke with a cold, quiet anger that was terrible to behold. ‘Can you possibly mean the daughter standing right in front of you? The one who is demonstrably, superbly, brilliantly alive?’
Immediate shift to the other heart melting facet to our Jupidad - the protectiveness. We find out later he’s been watching her for a while and I really get a sense at this point that he is SO APPALLED with how callously she’s been treated her whole life.
Whereas Corvus appears unbothered by how his words impact his daughter, Jupiter is the opposite - despite the fact he isn’t speaking to her directly he picks his words for her benefit - “superbly” “brilliantly”. Bet she’s never heard them said about her before. He’s also underlining how superb and brilliant life itself is, hopefully giving her the courage to answer the next question…
Morrigan,’ said Jupiter, in a voice very different from the one he’d just used with her father. ‘Don’t you want to live?’
Morrigan flinched. What sort of a question was that? ‘It doesn’t matter what I want.’
‘It does,’ he insisted. ‘It matters so very, very much. Right now it’s the only thing that matters.’
He absolutely shifts tone when speaking to her - this isn’t a guy who loses the plot or can’t control his temper when he gets angry. He puts the very justifiable anger away and immediately replaces it with compassion.
He also doesn’t dismiss her feelings - he understands why she thinks the way she does but he doesn’t let her stay in that mindset. He doesn’t just tell her what to do, he doesn’t say “don’t be daft, we’ve got to run” but instead takes the time to help her realise she has the right to decide her own fate, because despite what she’s been told for 11 years what she thinks DOES matter.
And then he waits to hear the words from her, despite the Hunt closing in outside (who he knows will likely kill him too if he opposes them, he must be at least a little scared for himself as well as her).
I think that Jupiter is already chipping away at the abuse and lies that have defined Morrigan’s life and he’s only been in the room 10 mins.
The windows began to rattle. There was a faint smell of burning. ‘What’s that?’ She squeezed his hand automatically. ‘What’s happening?’ Jupiter leaned down to whisper in her ear. ‘Do you trust me?’ She answered without thinking. ‘Yes.’ ‘You sure?’ ‘Positive.’ ‘All right.’ He looked her in the eye.
And so she trusts him implicitly. She squeezes his hand like a little girl might her Daddy’s when she needs reassurance. If he hadn’t already demonstrated that he has her best interests firmly at heart it would have been weird that she does this so soon, but it isn’t because he has.
Again, he looks her in the eye.

I think he’s angry about something
[IMAGE ID: A coloured sketch of Ezra Squall, of just his head and chest. He looks annoyed or hate-filled in a reserved sort of way. He is glaring at something on the right while his head is at a 3/4 angle towards the left. He is wearing a grey suit jacket and white dress shirt, along with a plain red tie. The background is a mid-toned grey, just lighter than the tone of his jacket. END OF ID.]

keep clenching my table and Thinking about squall's developments in hollowpox so i've GOT to divest my thoughts somewhere 😭
him as a child just seemingly having no outward indication of his future personality was such a choice . . . like his entire description of him as a normal kid who fooled around with his friends and got pleased whenever his teachers complimented him on his progress despite morrigan desperately searching for any sign, something underlying that facade. there's a certain unease in the implication with what's been shown so far that squall was a carefree kid who suddenly turned on those he grew up with and massacred them.
i think the ambiguity of what happened may remain for at least a bit more, but some of what he's said to morrigan previously, such as them having a common enemy and needing to unite on common fronts, seems to add to it?
in conjunction, his crazed outburst of sheer panic and desperation at president wintersea's imminent arrival was SO. it was SOOO. like it was truly something else to read him expressing such vulnerable emotions--his explanation about the hollowpox and in turn his elaboration on his position as a wundersmith and the amount of power he really possesses in relation to other more powerful people was SUCH a revelation.
it does seriously challenge the preconceived notions of him as the Big Bad; although there's no doubt he's an awful boogeyman who's done awful things, there's a whole new angle to be considered: that there's a more powerful boogeyman? or at least, someone who's possessive of more power and authority than squall? in this way, the world of the novels are even more expanded, and more deeper (less tangible?) entities are to be considered.
(still thinking about his "'DO YOU THINK I HAVEN'T--'" in response to morrigan's bafflement at why he hasn't tried to stop wintersea?? tangentially: the broadening of the political environment within the universe of nevermoor was so interesting!!)
god. anyway. SO pumped to see what next happens to the fucked-up guy.

Cooking Headcannons??
Anah
She's very average for an 11-13 year old; she probably helped the nuns make meals by peeling potatoes or something. I don't think she would do that badly if she tried. I also think that by the end of Hollowpox, she has barista-level skills at making coffee.
Thaddea
No creating, only destruction. If someone does not put food in front of her, she will simply drink the blood of her enemies. Good for her, wish that were me
Francis
Hear me out, he's not actually that good jk. I'd imagine he would try to avoid cooking when he's trying to relax, or at least just make simple comfort food if he wants to feed himself (his standards for simple are probably...interesting, though).
Hawthorne
Great at making little snacks he has to share with Baby Dave, also excellent at making mud pies. Very aesthetically pleasing, not so edible.
Morrigan
Has never cooked a day in her life, has never even looked at a stove; the cook at the manor would always chase her out. She would burn water. Every cooking related conversation she has with Francis ends with him staring off into the distance in horrified silence.
Cadence
Assuming she lives only with her mom and grandmother (and goes to school? did the kids go to a school before wunsoc?? 🤨), she probably only has to cook herself lunch sometimes. So she's excellent at making kraft mac n cheese, and not very good at anything else (pulling from experience here lol).
Arch
Why learn to cook when you can shoplift? jk unless?? I can't imagine him cooking, but I CAN imagine him enjoying a good TV dinner or something. I like to imagine him browsing the frozen meals aisle and picking out the most random and possibly disgusting stuff, like Kids Cuisine Gourmet Shrimp ✨
Lam
She's probably in the same boat as Morrigan...the only saving grace she has is the abiltiy to forsee disaster. Her water may burn, but it will never boil over, yk.
Mahir
I think he might have an idea of basic techniques and what to do in general from studying languages/cultures, but he has never cooked anything before and has no experience. Not quite as bad as Morrigan, but not good either.
Miss Cheery
GREAT at baking; she's only really interested in making deserts and sweets, and every other cooking skill she has is the bare minimum she needs to survive. Undercooked, underseasoned, the whole nine yards.
Roshni
She also has the bare minimum amount of skill you need to survive...she'd rather order something from a cafe and read than make her own food. She has more patience than Marina, at least, so her food isn't so bad.
Jupiter
Maybe he's good at no-cooking-required meals (sandwiches, salads, soups technically) since he has to survive his fancy Captain-y trips somehow. If you actually make him cook something, he will hand you back a burnt crisp that only vaguely resembles the ingredients you gave him.
Squall
I don't think he ever touched a stove before coming to the Republic. The process of learning was nothing short of a disaster in which he nearly starved or died several times, but he's probably good enough now.
