In May 2015, the NYU student collaborative Arcades Collective turned Washington Square Park into a satellite extension of the 56th Venice Biennale's research filter Garden of Disorder, part of the exhibition's ambitious project All the World's Futures. Sadly, Okwui Enwezor abandoned his original plan to stage a freeform, improv, lord-of-the-flies performance mashup throughout the Biennale's public gardens aka Giardini. He moved performance inside a closed venue, cutting the show's global public out of the work of exploring "all the world's futures." Arcades Collective remained committed to the concept of Garden of Disorder. Guided by core principles of composition--the collage essay, analog and digital cartography, repurposing social media--students collaboratively rewrote Washington Square Park to reflect their hybrid, multimodal sensibility. Instead of simply commenting or reporting on the global art exhibition, they joined it, contributing creative and practical solutions. The posts in this Tumblr show some of the process by which crowdsourced collage, cartography, and parody were used to engage a global art exhibition through a local city park.
