~ A rewrite of this. Enjoy!! ~
Soon after time had a name, there was the Age of the Demigods. Though the Elementals gods of Ninjago had been blessed (or cursed, depending on the lifetime) with a long reign, even they must pass. Even immortality came with mortal strings, and the demigods were left to roam the land.
Before passing, the god of Creation, Wu, granted leadership of the Overworld to four demigods. Each were chosen for their lineage and powers, but each accepted their role with sincerity.
Nya of Water was given control over the watery regions. Her brother, Kai of Fire, was granted the hot southern regions of the land. Zane of Ice was given the cold northern lands, and the demigod with the greatest power and lineage, Lloyd of Energy, was granted the vast middle.
He then gave Jay of Lightning the Sky and Cole of Earth the Underworld.
He passed and each demigod ruled in harmony. They respected each other’s territories and an age of peace followed.
Soon it came time for romances to be official, for just as their ancestors, the demigods needed to pass. Echo, brother of Zane and demigod of love, had known exactly whom he would pair since the moment they were brought into the world.
No one knew the exact time when Echo would come, since he was as unpredictable as his element. They only knew that he carried a red ball and would be struck when the time was right. (He had tried arrows once, but unfortunately it ended up with flying spiders and he was banned from using a bow ever again. Even gods have fears.)
Everyone had a name in mind and tried making their love painfully obvious.
Now, Echo knew that some loves weren’t meant to be romantic. Some mortal concept of “true love” or something had skewed the real meaning of the term. Foolish mortals, some of his favorite couples were platonic.
To Zane, he gave a shy yet passionate love for Nya. He also gave Nya a love for Zane, and the two lived happily.
To Kai, he gave the hand of the nymph Skylor. However, he gave Skylor a slightly cold heart, making Kai pine after her. Eventually, she accepted his love and the two were wedded.
To Lloyd, he gave no love but fake love for the nymph Harumi. To Harumi, he gave an evil love for Lloyd which eventually died out. This was mostly out of spite against Wu, who had forced Echo to live away from his brother. Since the cryptic was dead, the least he could do was break the heart of his lineage.
However, the most “forbidden” love of all was the love he gave to Cole and Jay. As Jay ruled the Sky and Cole ruled the Underworld, neither could cross into the other’s territory, in fear of total chaos ensuing. However, Echo gave them a strong love for each other which could only be broken by…. Well, that wasn’t important. He liked the drama it would create and didn’t bother telling anyone that there was a way to break it.
The only times they could meet were during the council meetings between the demigods. Passionate courting between the two always occurred, which disrupted the meetings. Tempers would fly and a few tiny wars even broke out.
Between the meetings, Cole would sing for Jay. Jay would walk to the edge of the clouds and listen as Cole sang a song of longing from the shadowy edges of his realm.
The other demigods begged for Echo to end their love, however the demigod claimed he wouldn’t appear until the next generation came. How he sent the message is unknown, but most assume a falcon was the deliverer.
Such actions went on for years, and nothing was ever done. Finally, in desperation, the two demigods sought out the help of Mystake, a witch who could help with even the worst of magical problems.
She listened as the two explained. “I cannot break your bond, however I can provide an alternative,” she offered. Eagerly, they agreed. “You must become mortal, a highly painful process. Only the truest of hearts will survive.” She knew one was not worthy, but she knew not to meddle with fate.
“And what of our kingdoms?” Cole asked. “Your kingdoms will be passed onto other worthy demigods. I give the Underworld to Morro, demigod of Ghosts, and the Sky to PIXAL, demigod of Warriors. They will take care of your lands.”
Both fell silent as they thought. Jay was the first to speak. “I love you, Cole. I will endure the pain.” “And I love you, Jay. I will endure the pain.” “It’s settled!” claimed the witch. She handed them two cups of tea and ordered them to drink.
They did and felt fire numb their blood. Then boil it.
The transformation began.
Jay held one of the purest of hearts of the world, one many claimed made him dumb. He had known no other love and would blindly walk into battle for Cole.
Cole however possessed a secret past. No one knew that he was the son of Lou, god of the Arts. When Cole had shown no interest in his father’s power, Lou cursed Cole to a life of abandonment. Cole roamed the lands and one day came upon Terran, god of Earth.
Cole loved Terran’s power, desperately wishing Terran was his father instead of Lou. When the Age of the gods ended, Terran began growing weak. However, as Terran had no descendants, he could not die. Terran grew power-hungry and refused to pass on his power.
Terran began plotting to take over the realm and murder the weaker demigods. Since the gods had faded, no one could stop him. Instead of returning and asking the other demigods for help, Cole killed Terran, thus receiving his Earth powers.
Instead of turning into a mortal, Cole transformed into a ghost. When he finally awoke, he was upset to see that Jay had a human form, however he did not. “What is the meaning of this?” cried Jay. “There must be some mistake!”
“Ah, but I said only the purest of hearts would become human,” repeated Mystake. And Echo’s spell broke, leaving Jay and Cole heartbroken.
Cole ran away, eventually becoming advisor to Morro. As Morro had once attempted the same thing, he kindly offered Cole a high-ranking position, as the kingdom had once been Cole’s.
Jay, however, was incredibly loyal and spent months wishing everything away. Mystake took pity on him and took him back to the Kingdom of the Sky. PIXAL graciously allowed him to roam the kingdom.
Occasionally, one can still see a figure walk the clouds and hear a mysterious voice singing.
