Virtual Sketchbook 3
The whole thing works by having a busy environment with many details that draw your interest. It has a lot of motion, especially within the waters. When I look at this piece, it makes me feel curious. They’re all racing or seemingly in a hurry to go somewhere. The media used is painting on a canvas, using oil with the zied being 07 ½ x 96 x 1 5/16 in. (179 x 243.8 x 3.3cm). The primary colors used are red, white, black, and blue. In the foreground, there are more rounded shapes, such as crescents and circles, for the shapes of the watermelon rafts and the bodies of the people swimming atop them. There are some rectangular shapes, mainly in the background with the buildings and the land. Regarding the subjects, multiple people and animals drift on the boats and, in the background, watch the people in the river. The work was designed with much stylization and dynamic poses. The colors are very pleasing to look at as many people are in the piece, but they are not overwhelming, helping the piece be balanced. The rhythm is quite emphasized in the piece, yet it has variety, as each subject is depicted, and the rafts are differently shaped and have different poses. The piece makes me feel curious and joyful because it feels like the subjects are in a rush, in some sort of race, making me feel excited and thrilled. Unfortunately, the artist is unknown. However, the piece was created in Italy, and given the imagery, it can be assumed that it was based in Italy. The piece is assumed to be made with some sort of satire with how each subject is depicted. The place depicted is in Italy, with the water and watermelon boats. The artwork shows how the artist feels that humans and animals are on the same wavelength, equal in how they continue down the race. The artwork shows they find it humorous that humans can believe they are superior to animals as they drive their boats alongside each other in the race, aiding the meaning of the piece, the artist was trying to say that humans and animals are equal, and neither is superior. The message gets across semi-clearly. You can tell that they’re racing against each other for something, but it took me a while to grasp that they were against each other. One of the individuals in the bottom left seems to be whispering about the other participants to his companions. This work of art is essential to the world because it endorses equality. With the description of the satirical depiction of how humans think they’re superior it shows how this artist’s intention is to show how we’re all equal. While this piece only speaks about animals, it can be transferred to other ideas about how we’re all equal. The piece stuck out to me because the imagery looked different from the other paintings I encountered. It stuck out to me with how dynamic the piece looked, with the movement of the people in the water rowing and the beautiful colors.

JOURNALING  – Make a visual outline of all the Principles of Design (Chapter 4) and define each one, interpreting the text’s definition of each one in your own words, so you fully understand it. Identify where you see examples of these principles in your everyday life or identify how an artist uses each element and principle by posting an example of an art form or drawing an example that uses that Principle next to the definition. (6 examples TOTAL) Unity and Variety: Unity is the appearance of consistency, while variety is diversity. An artist may use this to show how in sync or how in unison a piece might be.
Tumblr media
Balance: The appearance of equality, whether achieved through symmetry or asymmetry. You may see balance everywhere, for example, in a frame. Most of the time, frames are symmetrical, but sometimes they may be asymmetrical to distribute the weight.
Tumblr media
Emphasis and Subordination: Emphasis is a tactic that artists use to capture your attention to an area, while subordination is a technique used to show an area with a lesser value than others. An artist may do this to highlight the importance of a specific element of the piece.
Tumblr media
Directional Forces: A path for the viewer’s eye to follow, dragging them in a direction. An artist may use this technique in order to have the viewer follow the path and be dragged in a particular direction to convey an emotion or show the strength of an element.
Tumblr media
Repetition and Rhythm: The repetitive appearance of visual elements. Rhythm is the repetition of emphasized and subordinated sections within a design. An artist may use this to show harmony, maintain continuous movement, and feature a pleasing pattern.
Tumblr media
Scale and Proportion: Scale is the size of one thing in relation to another, while proportion is the difference between parts in relation to the whole. An artist may use these elements to highlight the importance of a specific aspect or its power.

WRITING AND LOOKING – Just as a good cook assembles the perfect ingredients for a delicious recipe, an artist assembles the right elements for a successful artwork. Choose any artwork from your textbook and make a recipe of the composition. For example, Velásquez’s artwork, Las Meninas contains implied lines, linear perspective, a distinct vanishing point, neutral colors, highlights, focal points described by geometric shapes (triangles and rectangles) and achieves balance through placement of figures and rhythm between foreground and background etc. Make sure to include the title of your choice with the figure and page number. Don’t use my example.
In Cildo Meirles’s “Cruzeiro Do Sul,” on page 4.6, Meireles uses scale and proportion by highlighting the tiny and fragile box compared to its surroundings. With its pure white background, your eyes are drawn to the arm that effortlessly holds up the little square. The square's size draws you in with the contrast of the only other element featured being much larger. The way the tiny box is delicately laid on the index finger shows the significance of the piece, in addition to its size.

CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD – Share a personal experience of how color has affected you (one paragraph). Make sure to use some of your new vocabulary (hue, value, intensity, saturation). If you had to pick a “color scheme” for your life, what would it be? Color has continuously affected me throughout my life. Whenever I go outside, I look at different clothing styles and colors, such as pastels or darker shades. The intensity or dullness of the colors can reflect my mood or how passionate I am. Colors affect not only my clothing but also what I draw in my pieces. Desaturated colors can give a sense of relaxation, while hues signify more emotion, such as how people associate red with passion or anger. Whenever I come up with designs, I keep these in mind and what these combinations of colors signify to the viewer. If I had to choose a color scheme to reflect my life, I would choose a pale blue because it’s a good middle ground. I do not see my life as sad, but I see it more positively, hence the bright value.
ART PROJECT – ARTIST’S CHOICE - Draw a cartoon or make a painting. The form: If you choose the cartoon (comic) it must be at least 3 panels. The size is not important. The painting can be executed with any of the materials (media) outlined in your textbook (see Chapters 6 and 7) and note that painting involves the use of WET media, drawing usually refers to dry media – I want to see PAINTING if you choose to make a painting, DRAWING is NOT the same thing). The content: The subject matter should be something that you are passionate about – something that has a deep personal meaning for you. The comic or the painting should be able to tell some type of story that relates your feelings about your chosen subject matter. Post pics of the finished product (in-process photos are also interesting!).

PHOTO/DESIGN - Logos:
Hot Topic
Apple
Discord
Nintendo
YouTube
Spotify
Instagram
Electronic Arts
Google Chrome Roblox
Mojang
SCF
Crypton
Sanrio
Sega YouTooz Microsoft
Each logo serves a different purpose for different companies. However, the main purpose is to draw your interest. I know these logos because they are from my immediate area, being my room. I’ve at least gotten a product or own one with one of the labels above, which makes me more familiar with the logo. I’ve become familiar with some of these logos from people's recommendations. For example, friends recommended I get Google Chrome when I got a new laptop.
I understand the value of these logos because they help you immediately know what something is or what it represents. For example, someone may not know what Microsoft is, but they would be familiar with the previously shown logo. This shows how logos' power may help one become familiar with a specific corporation. Another showcase of logos' power is when confronted with an unfamiliar logo. It can demonstrate the purpose of what the company does. Petco’s logo displays a dog and cat, which can lead to the thought of the store having to do something with pet care.

1. WRITING AND RESEARCH – Hi! My name is Wren, and I love art and drawing.
I was assigned "Roy Lichtenstein's 1963 Whaam!" Five facts I learned about my artist were: - He was drafted into the military during World War II - Played the clarinet as well as the piano - Created the piece above with two separate canvases - Invented a rotating easel so he could paint at different angles - Succumbed to pneumonia on September 19, 1997.Learning that he served in the army during war gave me some insight as to why he might have made this piece. There definitely seems to be another layer of why this piece was created besides it being based on a comic strip. With how the scene is structured, it seems very exaggerated and maybe even more ridiculous with overexplanation. After being drafted into the army, he may have disliked war and been engaged in it. The way he felt about war is reflected in this piece.

2. ART AND WRITING - Select a work of art from your life. It must be something that hangs in your house or your room, something that is important to you or that you look at everyday. Include a picture. In paragraph form (4 sentences), tell me about the art – what media were used to create it? What use does it serve? Do you think it is beautiful? Why? The piece above was created via lithography. With what the text reads, I believe it’s a poster to promote some sort of concert. The lady in the center might play an essential role, as she is the focal point of the piece, with her contrasting with the background. I find the piece beautiful because of the color choice. Not only does the lady stand out from the shadows from behind her, but the bright red sky frames her perfectly against the foreground.
3. WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT - Create a perceptual profile. What “baggage” are you bringing along when you look at art? Answer the following questions – How old are you? What is the gender you primarily align with? Where are you from? What is your ethnicity? What do you do for fun? Are you a member of any organized group? Where do you work? What makes you uniquely you? This helps us see from what exact point in the world we view and receive visual information. - 18 - Nonbinary - Florida, but I was born in New Jersey - I am jobless but plan to take commissions from people -  I couldn’t pinpoint what makes up myself uniquely other than all the features I am all together.

4. ART PROJECT (SELF-PORTRAIT) – Look at the work of Romare Bearden in Revel or online. He created collages that combine media (gouache, pencil, colored pencil) and photographs to express things from his life that he thought people could universally relate to. He was representing himself powerfully long before the advent of selfies. What are you fascinated by in your daily life? Create a self-portrait that somehow represents YOU. This could be a selfie (remember this is ART - your representation should encompass the definition as introduced in our text, and this is a graded assignment), a virtual collage, anything you assemble that communicates something to the viewer. But don’t let me (or anyone else) limit you – be as creative as you desire! Think about HOW your self-portrait will elevate the viewer's understanding of the subject = you.
