One Simple Reason You Need a Revs Check in WA
Tumblr media
If you ever needed a reason to get a car history report (also known as a REVs check or PPSR report) in WA, here it is:
On average, one vehicle is stolen in WA every hour.
Between October 2016 and September 2017, 3.48 vehicles were stolen per 1000 registered vehicles in WA alone. Of the 54,000 vehicles stolen across Australia, 8,000 were in Western Australia.
Stolen vehicles often find themselves back on the second-hand market, either in part or in whole. While it’s more common to strip the vehicle for parts to use on written-off vehicles (a practice known as “rebirthing”), it’s also not unusual for the car to simply be sold as-is. Since most cars come with immobilisers, thieves are more frequently stealing cars using the car’s actual keys, making it harder to spot a stolen used vehicle.
So what happens if you want to buy a used car, and it turns out to be stolen?
 Buying a stolen car
If someone doesn’t have the legal authority to sell a vehicle, the title of the vehicle remains with the original owner. A car could be stolen in one state, sold in another, and then sold again in a third, but it will always remain the legal property of the person it was stolen from.
What that means for you is that if it’s ever discovered the vehicle was stolen, it can and will be taken off you. Even if you had no idea the car was stolen; even if you bought if third-hand; and even if you’ve had the car for years, there’s nothing you can do. The car was never legally yours, and so is being returned to the rightful owner.
How to avoid buying a stolen vehicle
If you’re in the market for a secondhand vehicle in WA and want to make sure it’s not stolen, there’s one simple thing you can do to protect yourself:
 Get a PPSR report.
A PPSR report used to be known as a REVS Check. Traditionally, a REVS Check let you see if a car had a financial encumbrance on it. Over the last few years this has been updated into a new system known as the PPSR, or Personal Properties Security Registry. This system now gives you a much more comprehensive view of the history of the car.
With a PPSR report you can see:
•   When the car was registered, if ever
•   Whom it has been registered to and where, if anyone
•   Whether the vehicle has ever been written off in an insurance claim
•   Whether the vehicle has ever been declared stolen
How does a PPSR report work?
The PPSR takes information from various sources, including the Nation Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System, to provide comprehensive information on a vehicle. As soon as a vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is logged in Australia, an entry of that vehicle is registered with the PPSR.
When the vehicle is registered, that information is added to its listing. If the vehicle is ever written off or used in a loan, the information is recorded. And if the vehicle’s VIN is ever reported as stolen, this too gets noted.
By getting a PPSR report, you’ll quickly be able to see all the vital information about the car’s history at a glance.
Getting a PPSR report in WA
The best thing about the PPSR and PPSR reports is that they’re part of a national database, so you can get one from anywhere in the country for anywhere else in the country.
To get a PPSR report you’ll need the vehicle’s VIN or registration number. Just go to www.quickrevs.com.au, enter either ID code up the top of the site, pay the nominal fee, and that’s it. You’ll receive your comprehensive car history report in minutes.
