🌈 Dive into the world of Wonder Science TV like never before with our Wondervision glasses! Every hue, every moment, amplified. 🌈 Stay immersed in life’s vibrant spectrum, (but safety first!). Become an annual subscriber NOW and snag TWO free pairs + unlock the ultimate visual science experience 🌟(Link in bio) How does Wondervision work? These diffraction glasses are etched with 141,750 microscopic ridges, arranged in both vertical and horizontal directions. White light hitting the ridges gets bent into the color spectrum, according to each color’s intrinsic wavelength, moving at 186,282 miles per second. Red bends the least; Violet bends the most. The diffraction grid on the lenses makes colors interfere such that they produce 8 extra rainbow impressions of what you’re seeing. #Wondervision #wonderscience #wondersciencetv #physicsoflight #rainbow #rainbowspectrum #rainbowglasses #beach #beachlovers #science #sciencelovers #streamingtv #appletv #roku #firetv #android #ios #iphone October 23, 2023 at 02:18PM via Instagram https://instagr.am/reel/CywYKCByBOq/

Excited to announce that the Wonder Science short film, “Phase Transition”, is featured in the Labocine October 2023 (#87) Issue titled (ART)IFICIAL 2.0, leading into the 16th Annual Science New Wave Festival, starting today, presented by Imagine Science Films! In “Phase Transition”, the newly-narrated version, I delve into the intricate dance of emergence and transformation, using the elegance of basic chemistry as a canvas for generative art. Applying fire to catalyze shifts in various chemicals, I capture the mesmerizing transitions as they crystallize from hot liquid to cooler solid state – all through a microscopic lens. Intertwining this with the whimsical movement of hand-cut paper circle stop-motion animation, I aim to present the beauty of polychromatic geometries born from pure molecular expression. A close-up experience with a field-of-view at 2mm. Definitely check out Labocine: “a platform + art/film/science hub which takes on the form of a monthly cinema magazine that connects scientific thought with other issues that pertain to our cultures, societies and world. Each month, we bring to our hybrid audience a thematic curated program of films, not as a traditional playlist but more as a network of interlinked subjects.” October 20, 2023 at 03:23PM via Instagram https://instagr.am/reel/Cyox8HcyiEc/

🐞 A while ago in The Berkshires, NY, I stumbled upon some wild carrot plants teeming with vibrant ladybugs. I collected dozens of the beetles into a container. Then settled in a nearby pretty patch of clover flowers, and released them one at a time in front of my camera. Armed with my macro lens, I worked to capture up-close their earnest attempts to dash away! Not a single one would loiter in front of the lens. Watch to the end to see a striking green spider with googly red eyes that was not afraid and made a surprise cameo. 🌿🔍 ✦ , . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀☀️ * . . . ✦⠀       , *⠀ ⠀       ⠀✦⠀ . #MacroMagic #BerkshiresAdventures #LadybugLover #ladybugs #insects #beetles #bugs #clover #clovers #berkshires #macro #wonderscience #wondersciencetv #science #entomology August 23, 2023 at 03:57AM via Instagram https://instagr.am/reel/CwSNCNEK1ny/

I got to film this diatom arrangement from the late 1880s. The Victorian era saw a popular fascination with natural history and scientific exploration that led to the development of various art forms related to the study of nature. One such art form was diatom arranging on microscope slides.   Diatoms are microscopic algae with intricate silica shells, and these delicate and beautiful structures captivated scientists and artists alike. Using special tools like needles and brushes, practitioners would carefully place diatoms on microscope slides, creating patterns using the tiny specimens as elements of collage. The designs often incorporated different species of diatoms, showcasing their diversity and aesthetic qualities. The resulting arrangements were mounted between glass slides, and then sealed with a cover slip. 🪱WormS🪱 Microscopic nematodes have a unique way of moving despite lacking limbs or appendages. The movement of these long slender worms (typically .1 - 2.5mm long) is achieved through the coordinated contraction and relaxation of their body muscles, combined with the hydrostatic pressure within their fluid-filled body cavity. By contracting the longitudinal muscles that run along the length of their body, nematodes can create a bending motion that propels them forward in a wave-like manner. Their forward progress is still not very fast and IMO they look rather frantic achieving it. Nematodes possess sensory organs on both ends of their body, which help them detect environmental cues such as light, chemicals, movement, oxygen levels, and temperature. Using these sensory inputs, they can navigate and adjust their movement direction accordingly. Filmed with @jaredlead Jared Leadbetter at @caltech using Canon Mark III and Zeiss Axioplan II. The looks are achieved with various types of #microscopy including #brightfield #darkfield and #phasecontrast . Continuing our quartz thread from amethyst, this amazing quartz variety is RUTILATED QUARTZ🪡. This prized quartz is shot through with spikes of rutile, a mineral composed of titanium dioxide (TiO2). The rutile inclusions form delicate hair-like needles with submetallic luster that can range in color from silvery gray to black to reddish-brown to golden. The rutile spears most often grow first, in a rock cavity called a “vug”, and later the quartz fills in around them via hot mineral-laden water coming from deep in the earth and circulated by magma.   Rutile crystallizes in the tetragonal system with three mutually-perpendicular axes, and usually forms elongated prismatic crystals with striations (parallel linear grooves) on the surface. Its #crystals often exhibit a slender shape. The first specimen belongs to @microworldofgems, and I filmed it with the help of @mineralien. The second specimen is part of the Collection of the Harvard Museum of Natural History. 🔮 Amethyst is a variety of quartz known for its purple hue. Its color —which can range from delicate lilac to deep violet — is due to the presence of iron impurities within the crystal lattice. 🔍 🌍 Geologically, amethyst forms in volcanic rock cavities where silicon-rich fluids cool and crystallize over time. The slow growth of crystals allows for the development of beautiful and intricate formations, often featuring stunning crystal points and sparkling geode interiors, like these I filmed at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. ✨ Amethyst can be found in various locations around the world, including Brazil, Uruguay, and Zambia, among others. Each locality contributes its own distinctive characteristics, such as the size, transparency, and color intensity of the crystals. 💜 #Amethyst #Gemstone #NaturalBeauty #CrystalLove #EarthWonders #markmothersbaugh @mutatomuzika_official #harvard #wonderscience #geodes #crystal #crystalhealing June 28, 2023 at 01:17PM via Instagram https://instagr.am/reel/CuDA6kcsKXc/

🌿🐛 While exploring the enchanting wilderness of Pennsylvania, our intrepid social media manager @juki_timoner stumbled upon this mesmerizing, many-legged creature! Feast your eyes on the beautiful Black and Gold Flat Millipede, one of eight endemic millipede species in southwest Pennsylvania. Myriapods never cease to amaze! Not an insect, a myriapod is a type of arthropod with simple eyes, numerous legs, and body segments. In the video, Juki fearlessly handles the striking millipede. Wearing gloves is strongly recommended for handling similar arthropods, but millipedes are generally safe to hold. Juki correctly identified it by its lack of fangs, distinguishing it from centipedes. Millipedes and centipedes may appear similar, but they differ in feeding habits and leg arrangements. Millipedes use forceps to feed on decomposing plants, while centipedes have venomous fangs for capturing prey. Observing leg sets per body segment helps differentiate them: millipedes have two leg sets per body segment, positioned underneath the body; centipedes have one leg set per body segment, attached at the side. Although Juki kept things calm, the encounter was not without risk because this millipede species, like some others, possesses a chemical defense mechanism. Amazingly, it concocts a noxious cyanide compound in its ozadene glands— specialized secretory sacs located along its sides. However, it deploys these limited toxin reserves only as a last resort, opting instead to ward off predators with vividly colored “I’M POISONOUS” full-body tattoos. Across the animal kingdom, this phenomenon is called “aposematism” – where bright colors serve as warnings of chemical defense or mimicry of similar-looking species that pose a toxic threat. 🔬 For more on millipedes and their incredible autopilot walking, watch the “Millipede Walk” episode on Wonder Science.
