hey. hey you. wanna see my betsy bobbin and polychrome designs? of course you do
Tumblr media
color ref. i love doing polly's hair cloudy with little rainbows in it instead of being completely saturated! i'll probably finish coloring this later but im tired of working on it (photos app crashes every few times i try to color)
Tumblr media
gross doodles i thought too much about and made worse. oh well
hcs and additions:
rrrrhhrgrg imagine.... artist betsy and muse polly..........
i mean, come on. they're great. we've got the perfect couple with dozens, but what about the pining? the star-crossed lovers? polychrome having to return to her father/the rainbow/the sky and betsy pining in the meantime?? betsy hanging out with dorothy so they can talk about their fairy girlfriends??? do you see my vision!!!!!!
and yes they're aged up. for my purposes most of my oz hcs are post-canon. i adopt the thompson tradition of optional aging most of the time, since it's convenient, but idk. do what you want. it's oz.
yeah. this is all based on about six passages from tik-tok of oz. what are you gonna do about it?
also i wrote a fic about them once and it's still one of my favorites
betsy's probably bisexual, polly's a rainbow fairy. take that as you will. also, i know, controversial pale polychrome design, but consider: inhumanly pale skin. basically, she's translucent. barely even made of flesh

No problem :)
Ok but like for the five people who read Dorothy Must Die, did anyone else think it was weird how Dorothy was hyperfeminineized? Like the girl was raised on a farm. Dorothy and the wizard of Oz knows what I鈥檓 talking about. It gave me the vibe that the author had a grudge against a Regina George in high school and make Dorothy like her. All I鈥檓 saying is that a more Tomboy Dorothy would be more in character.

No Place Like Oz is genuinely my favourite Dorothy Must Die story. I actually prefer it to the main series tbh, the tense atmosphere and the way Dorothy is slowly corrupted by power is top-notch
(Littlefinger's a character from Game of Thrones who's known for scheming and being manipulative and mysterious.)

I feel like the Scarecrow's most interesting in No Place Like Oz. Him being manipulative side is an interesting idea and it added an extra sinister layer to the story. But for the rest of the series he just ends up becoming another generic bad guy. We could've had Littlefinger Scarecrow lol
I wish Danielle Paige had fleshed out more of her ideas because I think her take on Oz is genuinely very creative and unique, but there's a bunch of stuff she doesn't expand on which she should've expanded on. For example, it's established that Dorothy still throws big parties that all the Oz characters attend, like how Ozma did in the original books. Are said Oz characters aware of what's going on? Are they ok with it? If not why do they still hang out with Dorothy and co? It's like the book wants to be mysterious and keep you guessing... but hardly ever actually explains stuff.

Yeah, Dorothy's companions (and a lot of the Oz characters in general) were really underused. I like Dorothy Must Die, but it definitely could have been more.

Yes! The Tin Woodman was so creepy in DMD. Everything about his story just made me think "why?" I did enjoy his novella because of how disturbing it was (I like disturbing books), but imo it barely felt relevant to the main story, especially since he gets killed off so early on.

It makes a bit more sense when you read the prequel novella No Place Like Oz, which shows Dorothy's growing resentment of farm life and desire for glamour, and how this makes her vulnerable to manipulation by the Scarecrow and Glinda.
That being said, when I first read Dorothy Must Die I found the sexualisation of Dorothy weird, especially since she's established to be a teenager in this universe, rather than an adult woman.

I really want to read this book, but none of my local libraries have it and I haven't been able to find a copy online that I could afford :')
Ozma's story really stuck with me when I first read the books. She's a really interesting character both from an in-universe (how Ozma's character develops throughout the series) and analytical perspective (how and why L. Frank Baum wrote her the way he did). I could write a whole essay about Ozma alone lol

Excited to give this a read, it was recommended by a wonderful Wizard of Oz TikTok channel called The Oz Vlog. Just checked it out from the library. Recently learned about Princess Ozma being trans and having a very close relationship with Dorothy. Would like to know more and I may also start reading all the Wizard of Oz books. Please let me know your thoughts about this book, The Wizard of Oz series and Princess Ozma!
