This is Hedy Lamarr. She was an immigrant, an actress, and she helped create the technology used in WiFi and Bluetooth devices. You probably couldn’t be reading this without her contributions.

“All creative people want to do the unexpected. I’m a sworn enemy of convention. I despise the conventional in anything, even the arts.”
Remembering legendary actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr on her birthday…
Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler on November 9th, 1914* in Vienna, Austria
*(or 1913, as documents in her son Tony Loder’s possession indicate)
Died on January 19th, 2000 (age 85 or 86) in Casselberry, Florida
Alongside composer George Antheil, Hedy co-invented frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology (patented in 1942), used today as the basis of wireless communications and Wi-Fi. Lamarr and Antheil used a player piano roll as the inspiration for their invention, which was originally intended to scramble communications regarding missile launches during World War II, preventing enemy forces from intercepting the signals and giving them time to perform evasive measures. Hedy was inspired to come up with the idea after reading news about a number of children who lost their lives during the war. In addition to her technological efforts, Lamarr also raised millions of dollars for the war effort while participating in bond selling tours across the United States.
