I didn't realize the common belief was that Hiruluk had actually gotten his cardiovascular disease cured by the cherry blossoms and then caught another one. I guess that does make sense, and absolutely might be true. But I read it slightly differently, and I feel it fits the narrative slightly better.
I think Hiruluk's fatal, incurable heart disease was depression.
I don't know if that would have been caused by learning he has a fatal disease - something like chronic heart failure, or congestive heart failure, something that can be managed even for decades, but will eventually kill you. Or if the fatal disease that was about to kill him when the incident with the amiudake and the explosion on Drum was something he contracted in the time since returning from the West.
But it doesn't seem like it makes a lot of sense to me for Kureha and Hiruluk to be debating over whether his disease was cured - either it was cured and then later returned, or it wasn't cured, and that's kind of the only pertinent question. Neither of those points were mentioned when they discussed the Sakura blossoms. They didn't ever say "your disease has returned", they just talk about the fatal disease they both know he has.
But this makes much more sense if the disease cured by the cherry blossoms was figurative, or if it's more subjective, like depression. This would also make more sense as to why Hiruluk believes the cherry blossoms would cure the country of their "sickness of the heart" - they're not all collectively physically ill, or at least that's not the main point that he's getting at. They're miserable. I've often heard people say Hiruluk would be much better as a psychologist than an MD and I think that's exactly what he was, but lacking MDs, he did his best to learn medicine enough to help. I mean, who tf would have given him a medical license - but we still call psychologists "Doctor".
It also kind of comes down to a thing I've been thinking about, with who actually inherited Hiruluk's will. Because I think his words actually betray his real motive, confusing physical illness for mental illness. He's not actually trying to cure every disease. He's trying to bring people joy, to give them the strength to free themselves from Wapol's tyrrany.
And I mean. "Freeing oppressed people with joy" is uh. Pretty familiar. As a concept
I think it's incredibly noteworthy that his story is the first time we hear the term "inherited will". And I think that really, in the end, the will that was inherited wasn't passed onto Chopper - but to Luffy. Or maybe to Chopper to follow the ideals of Nika, either way shakes out to be the same. "Now I WANT to be a monster so I can help Luffy!"
In the end he did technically choose to die by suicide, but only because he was inches from death by either innocently, tragically misguided kindness, or his physical heart sickness that ultimately was never actually cured. Actually - he chose to die three times: eating the amiudake, going to the castle to cure the country's only doctors, and blowing himself up. But only when he was on the absolute last thread of life, choosing to die before his illness claimed him; and each of these deaths he chose were for causes extremely, crucially important to him. Not a meaningless suicide in the face of hopeless despair. His last words were, "I've had a marvelous life!", shouted into the sky, and he died with the biggest grin on his face, knowing his will - specifically to bring joy to the citizens of his country, NOT to cure them of physical disease - would be carried on.
And to me, that just makes his cherry blossoms as a cure for depression ring far truer than any medical ailment somehow shared by every citizen, yknow?

Ok can we talk about how toph held up a huge ass building? I feel like this is never addressed.
Tumblr media
The Gaang is in the sand, which is already hard for Toph to see/feel, and then she holds up this giant library?? While trying to protect Appa.
Also, can we talk about how its not one mass of rock-it's made of bricks, and being held together by gravity. She really said "Every one of you blocks, pillars, tiles, boards, and the rest of you are going to stay in your exact spots and not sink to the spirit world BECAUSE I SAID SO!" while she was fighting super mystical spirit magic. While fighting and actual spirits power. For who knows how long, because Sokka and Aang had time to check every date till Sozins comet would hit at least a few months away.
Can we also talk about how Toph was so upset and ashamed about loosing Appa due to sand bending skill that she practiced hard to perfect it.

I need to know what the story is behind the silver cinderella dress
So. We all know Cinderella's dress is blue, right. The merch, the parks, the remake — she's in a blue dress.
Tumblr media
But her dress isn't blue.
Tumblr media
That's not blue. That's silver. In fact, it was explicitly chosen to be silver both because it was silver (and gold) in the original story to portray opulence, to match the Fairy Godmother's silvery white magic (literally, the color of the magic is named silver white), and to differentiate between her magic dress from her very white wedding dress.
So why is it blue in marketing? Well, there's the horrible "restorations" that washed out the original colors badly, but most of it is just marketing. Blue is brighter and sells better, so when Disney started marketing princesses in the lineup in the 90s, they made her dress sky blue so as to sell her toys better. (They also had to do some shady finagling to make everyone have their own dress color, but my beef is less with Aurora who does at least wear the pink dress in the film.)
Now this, in and of itself, would be an issue for me because it's important to the story for Cinderella's dress to be magical and opulent and not basic blue. But it becomes something I will throw hands over because this:
Tumblr media
Gorgeous, shimmery, pearlescent periwinkle yes it's blue but it's magical anyway dress that has had a lot of time and effort and design and hand stitching put into it. This got edited into this:
Tumblr media
Ugly garish aggressive monstrosity because the original art doesn't match the marketing enough.

What I’d give for one of the Cinderella remakes to go into how when you’re in an isolated and abusive situation, sometimes you need to be saved and you’re not weak if you can’t escape by yourself
I’ve never been a fan of bad faith reinterpretations of fairy tales, especially ones which flatten the originals into “princesses is saved by a prince and nothing else”, to then go #girlboss. The princess can save herself because she’s a strong female character! (Implying if you’re in a bad situation, it’s because you’re not strong enough to get out)

I saw what you did there, Disney. ;-)
I watched a scene from Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, where Milo Thatch meets the wealthy eccentric, Preston Whitmore.  The first (and only) time I saw this (in theaters) I was paying attention to Milo and Whitmore, and not much to the background.
Today, I noticed the fish in the tank.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I recognized them.  My Mom taught me about them, because they were “discovered” when she was a kid.
They’re Coelacanths.
Tumblr media
Coelacanths were believed to have been extinct for 65 million years.
In 1938, when my Mom was 8, Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, a museum curator in East London, South Africa, found an extraordinary dead fish in a pile on the docks.
(That link is now behind an ad-block wall, so here’s a different article.)
Atlantis: The Lost Empire takes place in 1914.
Whitmore has live coelacanths 24 years before the “living fossil” was officially discovered.
So somebody brought them, alive, to Whitmore.  And Whitmore didn’t tell anyone.  Not scientists.  Not newspapers.
To anyone watching the movie who recognized the fish immediately, they would have proof that Whitmore is not just some eccentric old fart.  He knows there are undiscovered things in the world, and he’s not interested in letting the world at large know about them.  It tells us why Whitmore believes Milo, and why he believes The Shepherd’s Journal is real.  He’s just testing the young man, to see if he also truly believes, and if he’s truly committed.
Fucking clever, Disney.  I need to watch the rest of the background, see if anything else is in Whitmore’s room!
This movie is sorely underrated.

I love that folks are being more accepting of autism, but I don't love that autism is being sanitized into a quirk.
There's a cute and acceptable form of autism on social media, and I don't see any indication that folks are remotely ready for discussing the rest of it, which contains all the uncomfortable things that impede a person's everyday life, require support, and make acceptance almost impossible—where the hygiene struggles, inappropriate social behaviors, involuntary movements and outbursts, meltdowns, and emotional dependence issues live. And the cuter and more sanitized the "good" autism gets, the more unacceptable the "bad" autism becomes.
