I've been vague posting about hating shovel talk fic but I'll go on the record now

I've been reading bucktommy fic from 911 and I wish more people would tag shovel talk so I could filter that shit out.

It's such a miserable trope, I do not understand why it's so popular.

It's rooted in misogynist bullshit like a dad threatening the boyfriend of his teenage daughter. It got a quirky makeover in Buffy, but that's where it comes from.

It's always out of character, it's always condescending and paternalistic, and it just makes loved ones look like arseholes.

Like, obviously I think about what it would look like irl, and if anyone was like 'if you hurt them I'll hurt you,' even in a jokey tone, I would immediately break up with my person. Like, that's the sort of energy or thinking that their friends and family are bringing? Awful.

In a fictional sense, people keep writing Buck's loved ones threatening Tommy and it's like...you realise how awful the optics on this are, right?

The idea that a man comes out as queer and the first thing his friends and family do is threaten violence against the man he's gotten involved with? It's awful. It doesn't matter that it's jokey.

The concept that a relationship with a man needs to have the threat of harm hanging over it is insane to me

And it's so disrespectful to Buck. His loved ones have so little respect for him that they feel the need to threaten his new romance? Just because he's dating a man?

But yeah. Families and friends threatening to beat up a queer man, destroy his life or whatever other bullshit form the shovel talk takes...it's bad..it feels bad to read.

anyway the actual point of fandom is to inspire each other. reading each other's fics and admiring each other's art and saying wow i love this and i feel something and i want to invoke this in other people, i want to write a sentence that feels like a meteor shower, i want to paint a kiss with such tenderness it makes you ache, i want to create something that someone else somewhere will see it and think oh, i need to do that too, right now. i am embracing being a corny cunt on main to say inspiring each other is one of the things humanity is best at and one of the things fandom is built for and i think that's beautiful

i want so much minutiae about bucky as the winter soldier… i want all of those classified files to be real so i can read them. i wanna know every single thing they documented… how long it took to break him and how long to put him together, how they trained him, how they punished him, what they experimented on him, how they attached the arm, how sensitive it was, what they fed him, how they kept him clean, how much he was allowed to speak, how many missions did he actually have, how much would he remember between missions, how many languages he knew and how he learned them, how much was he even aware of while he was doing it, did he even know he was human or did he think he was something else, how the soviets treated him compared to the americans, how many handlers he had, which one was his favourite, did he have favourites. did he like things and just know not to mention it or was he unable to even access whether he liked or didn’t like something.

i want fake journalism about this. i want medical journals about prosthetics and philosophical debates about agency and history books needing to be revised. whistleblowers exposing decades-old corruption in europe and investigative documentaries exposing the truth about the winter soldier and horror thrillers depicting a young soldier being captured and brainwashed. warring op-eds calling him a monster and a traitor vs those calling him a hero and a tragedy, and bucky thinking he’s probably all of the above. strange stories told by retired military officials from china and civilians from cuba, about a blue-eyed man who spoke their languages perfectly, who didn’t know how to smile but who gave scraps of food to stray dogs. stories their families had chalked up to trauma or old age or exaggeration, that when all pieced together create a very different picture of the man the media was calling a terrorist.

like bucky deserves privacy but the world would not give it to him. the winter soldier being a headline and an academic issue and a medical wonder and a folk tale and a ghost story and then maybe, eventually, a person.

I know, everyone and their mom is tired of seeing this from me, but I'm seconds away from a total mental breakdown about this at any given moment.

I took all of my money, all of the cash we had in the rainy day jar, and even pulled the < $1 I had from my savings account to pay the second half of rent for the month. After that, I am at -$575.

Because my employer is only giving me $25 a week during my medical leave (< $10 after tax), and I have no idea when I'm going to actually get money from the state. I have another job I'm pursuing (just praying I get called back for the working interview or at least an answer this week), but I won't get paid from that until I actually get the job and, you know, actually start working.

I just want to have positive money at the end of the month, so that rent will actually take out of my account again. It's going to put me back in the toilet after that, but I just want to know we'll be able to keep our apartment in May, you know?

I can't even keep Dashing because my car has no gas in it. I'm not getting Etsy orders. I'm stuck at home while Kit is at work and I hate that I can't do anything to help right now. Any little amount will be helpful, or even a reblog if you can't give anything right now.

At D&D today one of the other players wound up questioning me about how I feel about Stony and about Stucky, literally while I'm wearing one of my Zemo shirts.

Her whole face scrunched up like "isn't Bucky problematic enough???"

Ma'am you come into my house to slander Bucky like this???

Anyway it was all perfectly chill but I sat there for a very long moment while she was showing off her Stucky shirt like... I am going to have to work on fic again, because I am not letting this stand. I will make things more problematic on purpose.

I'm glad you enjoy the ships you enjoy, I'm not here to trash talk them. I believe we all deserve to space to enjoy whatever aspects of fiction we like.

I simply happen to like the complicated and fascinating dynamic between a character whose only power against a physically super powered individual is his words - and somehow he is successful. This man could crush Zemo's neck in a second, and he doesn't despite the provocation. It's interesting as hell to me.

It's intriguing to see Bucky navigating the space between having spent so long being controlled, and learning to claw back control even in the face of someone who's willing to play with elements of that control, even without the power to truly back them up. It's neat as hell to explore what drives Zemo to treat Bucky differently than he treats other super soldiers, and what made Zemo decide that Bucky "got to live" / was an exception. What drives a man with such a strong code to make that kind of exception?
