The idea that he had tested killing himself hung there in the air for a moment and she wasn't sure what to say. Perhaps it was just because as a lich, he didn't have to worry about things like living, but it still was going to nag at her in the back of her mind. She really didn't want to bring any harm to him, even if he could regenerate.
"Traveling sounds exciting," she told him with a smile, wanting to focus instead on his mother. There was so much more to talk about there she thought, than what he might have done to test his own poisons. At the same time, she was beginning to wonder why he had decided on lichdom to begin with. Was it just to do things like experiment on himself? What did he need all of the poisons for? He wasn't going to use any of those poisons on her...was he? "At least, if she enjoys it."
Eve paused slowly, feeling the discontentment seep into her facial features at the question that had been posed before her. He probably didn't even mean it the way she was taking it, but it didn't stop her from thinking he did.
Tumblr media
"Do I look illiterate to you?" she asked him suddenly, tilting her head to the side a little. "Because I assure you, that I am not. I may not be magically educated, but my mother taught me and my siblings how to read and write."
A fingertip skimmed along the pages while he listened to her, rereading aspects he already knew, refreshing them to the forefront of his mind.
"Well, of course you can kill this physical form," he explained. "But I will regenerate quickly enough that it's practically an inconvenience. Frankly, I have done it myself to test the lethality of some poisons." It might have sounded extreme to anyone other than a lich or something of his nature, he supposed, but it was also a convenient way to know his product was effective.
"As for my mother, she traverses from time to time. It is easier as far as the time imbalance works for her to come here." Not that Tareque ever really had ties not to leave the plane. He doubted his tower would crumble. Yet, as it likely would with any lich, it unnerved him to be on a different one than his phylactery was. "She prefers to remain in the Feywild, or aiding the reconstruction of Sildeyuir." Whatever that meant. Sildeyuir was long lost for the Ruar-tel-quessir. Rebuilding anything felt pointless. "The battle efforts seem to be never ending there," he said with a shrug.

He placed a bookmark between some pages and closed book, glancing to her. "Can you read?"

Whatever this 'sacred rite' was, Eve knew that she was going to have to fight her way out a little more. She still had some magic crackling at her fingertips, but her arm needed attention and sooner rather than later. With Halsin in bear form, they seemed a little more worried about killing him now, which gave her other thoughts.
Eve did have a panther wild shape she could pull out.
The only problem with that was that it would make it so she couldn't do any more spells like that and having two animals on the playing field so to speak? That might do more harm than good as far as fighting more people was concerned. Yes, she could go for the jugular, and she could probably take a couple of them on like that, but would it work? It might buy a little time, but magic seemed to do just fine, she just didn't want to hurt her flower or the part of the woods they were in.
"If you want to kill him, you have to go through me," Eve told them menacingly, conjuring up a cloud of daggers with a graceful swish of her hands. She wasn't about to have Halsin injured because of her, so she was going to have to figure out the best course of action here, glad it hit at least the two standing closest together. "I'm afraid I'm not parting with a hand today."
The woman smirked at her. "We'll see about that."
It was clear she knew what Eve's weakness was in this fight, because she made a beeline directly for Halsin, narrowly avoiding the storm of cutlery that Eve had made. She was going to go straight for the kill with him, an eager glint in her eyes that told Eve that she was incredibly dangerous. While she knew that Halsin could handle himself, she wanted to be in between her and the woman quite desperately--but she had her hands full.
If her concentration broke, the spell would too.
Big brown eyes looked away from the crumpled form of the crazed man to watch Eve draw closer. She seemed to catch a glimpse of the contents inside the man's bloody sack, but her face revealed nothing about what she saw. He barely had time to look back at the man who moaned in pain before magic reverberated, swiftly ending his life.
The massive bear remained very still, unbecoming of a creature so large. He could smell them -- others lurking just beyond the trees. He answered Eve with a growl as the others started to emerge from the shadows. Four of them, prowling into the clearing to regard the bear and girl with mixed looks of amusement and disdain. One who looked rather annoyed at the aftermath of Halsin and Eve defending themselves took a step forward.
" You are interfering with a sacred rite, " they said coldly.
A sacred rite to sever hands? Halsin thought, but the bear just huffed loudly. A more amused looking woman shrugged, gestured to the body of the dead, deranged man, and said, " I dunno, looks like they saved us a bit of trouble, if you ask me. "
Halsin didn't dare take his eyes off of them to glance at the body near him. They were so desperate to collect hands that they would sacrifice one of their own? Another less amused man said, " The weakling's way. " Which earned him an unpleasant look from the woman.
The last one, a overly chipper looking gnome, smiled wide and asked, " --So we kill them? "
Halsin growled and pawed at the ground. The gnome giggled, but it was the one who had addressed them first that moved. And they moved quickly, drawing a longsword from their belt and lunging forward in the same motion. The bear raised a paw to swat them away, but he was too slow -- the sword found purchase, sinking into the bear's exposed chest. With a roar, Halsin brought down the massive paw, knocking the other away and dislodging the blade.
" Kill the bear, and get the hand from the girl, " a sharp order from another in the group, and Halsin heard the grating of steel being pulled from sheaths.

Ever since Mizora had shown up in Camp, Eve had been feeling a bit on edge. Not just because Mizora was a cambion, but because Wyll seemed on edge and Eve didn't want Wyll to feel uncomfortable. So, while she was trying to be a good hostess, it was...harder than she had anticipated. There was so much at stake still, and it felt like Mizora was breathing down their necks.
"Are you actually enjoying yourself?" Eve found herself asking that night. There was no malice in her voice: she was genuinely curious. What fun could it be to actually be stuck here with them? Unless of course she was watching them for some reason she just didn't know yet. "We can't be very interesting."
To a cambion anyway.

"I'm a very bad druid," Eve said gently, glancing at Gar as he stood next to her.
In most situations, Eve quite happily talked to the animals around them, sometimes figuring out more about a situation through them than they figured out from some of the people they talked to. However, in this squirrel's case, Eve realized that some animals were like any other species: they were mean. This one in particular had left her with this feeling in the pit of her stomach.
"I have literally never wanted to kick a squirrel more in my entire life..." But she wouldn't.

A smile tugged at her lips and she couldn't help but let a laugh roll out of her. "She snores, does she? That sounds endearing, actually." In fact, she thought it was kind of cute that Karlach, their big barbarian mama bear, snored like that. "I can assume you didn't get much sleep because of it though."
That was when she saw his eyes surveying what was going on, and she paused her movements. She didn't want or need anyone to fuss over her, and she took a deep breath as her smile fell. Was it that noticeable? She hadn't actually noticed that she was limping, but perhaps she was favoring her left leg...
Tumblr media
"It's nothing that a healing salve can't cure," she told him, using her hands to motion with the plants. "My father taught me how to make them when I was very young. He believed everyone in the circle needed to know how and he wasn't wrong? They can come in handier than a potion."
corpses piled to the bleeding horizon. an altar bathed in the grace of a father's love. against your chest, the last dagger bit, and your heart wept. gazing upon eve with her armful of plants, you wonder what it is that druids dream about. she isn't an ideal candidate to ask. shadow cannot hide the state of her from your infernal eye.
"i made the mistake o' falling asleep in karlach's tent," she was regaling you with a story about avernus fighting pits, "i don't recommend it. her snores sound like a forge."

moonlight refracts in a dazzle of pearl across the jeweled surface of your right eye, betraying the discretion you attempt to glance at eve's leg with. "is there something wrong? looks like your favoring that side."

These are the kinds of moments in it all that makes it all worth it in the end, no matter what ends up happening. She's just glad that she and Bella have this time to just kind of...be. While it was interrupted a little with talk of the unknown, she almost enjoyed that a little bit. It was nice to know they could talk about things that they didn't know and it wasn't scaring them away.
"At the end of the day, it's another adventure. It can't be as bad as dealing with Auntie Ethel, can it?" she asked her with a little laugh. Some of what they had gone through already could make a normal person's stomach churn, but she supposed that dealing with a hag could be worse than how they had gotten out. Nothing like fighting bad guys for them anymore. "I'll admit...the druid in me wants to see the vegetation down there..."
Tumblr media
Eve had always been curious about things like that, and sometimes she felt like the others thought that she was a little weird for that. At the same time, when you lived your whole life in the forest, how else was one supposed to act when faced with things like that. There would be different plants, different flowers--and a lack of light. What kinds of creatures were there?
"Think I might end up bringing something back as a pet?" she teased lightly.
Bella hums, tilting her head to make the glide of Eve's fingers through her hair easier, savouring the feeling of the other's tender touch.
"I suppose you're right. And we've made it this far with relatively limited knowledge." Some of them more than others, but that was fine. They had a collective of unique experiences, and one of them usually knew something about whatever they were facing - no matter how small.
Tumblr media
As silence fell, Bella leans in to press a kiss to Eve's shoulder. "Hmm? I don't think it would hurt, is all, if we have enough time. If everyone else agrees that we need to go straight away then maybe we will, but you're right - being the most prepared we can be can only work in our favour." Bella starts thinking about people in the grove who might have some idea of what to expect in the Underdark. Maybe Nettie (though she wasn't exactly looked upon favourably after their last encounter), or maybe Rath if they could get time with him again.

She honestly didn't mean to make Johanne feel left out--it just hadn't really registered that she would like one. Eve felt a little ashamed, mainly because she had seemed to be interested in flowers as much as she was, so of course she would want one! It was going to make Eve feel a bit sheepish for a while, but at least it would be easily rectified.
Tumblr media
"Regardless, I don't want you to think that I don't value you, or that I don't enjoy your company very much, because I do," she promised, giving her a smile and then nodding. "So what do you think? We need red in there for passion, and I do think that white would suit you...but what are your favorite flowers? We have to make sure that this crown is fit for the queen that you are."
It's not an expression that's often seen on the aasimar's face— a somewhat dejected look on her face at the sight of the others getting their own flower crown while she didn't. It wasn't as if she couldn't make her own, but having one made as a gift was different.
Tumblr media
When Eve offered to make her a crown, Johanne held a mutedly entertained smile. She had mumbled the words to herself, having thought no one heard her, but the sorcereress was quick to pick it up. "Don't be ashamed. We've become a big group now."

"Because you are distracting," she giggled a little, humming into the kisses as she kept her arms around him and held him close.
Yes, they were going to need to do actual lessons, today, but she was enjoying just having their lips crush together for now affectionately. The closer they got, the more important these moments were, and she nuzzled his nose with hers, resting her forehead against his own for a beat when she'd claimed more than the allotted five she had wanted. Whether or not he'd notice and tease...well...she'd just have to wait for that one for now.
"As far as lessons go," Eve began, running her finger through his hair and then tucking it behind his ear on one wide, purposefully grazing the shell of his ear with her fingertip, "What do you think is the most important thing for us to practice? You know more about your realm than I could possibly without research."
Tumblr media
Though, admittedly there were other things running through her mind too: namely, was his family still alive? If she ended up in the other plane with them, would she meet them? Would they like her? She wanted him to feel like she was worth showing off at the very least as a promising apprentice, if not a life partner.
"Five?" He whispered back, his smile wide against her own. The number was so specific that it added the perfect level of silliness to the affectionate demand. As if she ever would have to actually demand him.
Whether or not it was merely an excuse to delay lessons, Tareque would not object to another reason to press his lips to hers, especially numerous times.
"And you said I was distracting," he murmured with amused irony. He was quite aware that she could be just as distracting as him, with her stretches and little sways of the hips when she didn't think he would notice, doing it all a second time to be certain. He often did spot it, but it was thrilling to see her pursue his attention.
Tumblr media
Inevitably, Tareque lost count-- not that he had been meticulously tracking it. Maybe three... Maybe five. Did it matter?

Wyll being a terrible monster hunter is something that is so special actually. told to hunt heartless devil? immediately convinced of her goodness and humanity and without hesitation agrees to defy the devil who has his soul in custody and spare karlach at tremendous personal physical cost. vampire in camp? well hes handsome and funny and pretty polite about where he puts his teeth so it’s fine all things considered. finding out the person who ritualistically disemboweled a tiefling in front of him is a bhaalspawn like an unholy progeny of the god of murder that is culturally immediately reviled? no that’s his friend and he completely trusts in their ability to fight their nature with their own inner light. it doesn’t matter that they created the absolute they’re not that person anymore. Like Wyll. you are literally categorically not hunting the monsters. guy of all time

She felt bad and there was no hiding that at this point. Eve didn't want to come off as a paranoid person and honestly, she just had this feeling in her gut that they all needed to be held accountable. That included herself, as she knew that not all of the choices she tried to make were exactly the best or most thought out ones. Still, if the shoe had been on the other foot, she had a feeling she would react similarly.
Tumblr media
"I didn't mean to spook you," she told him with a gentle sigh, chewing on her lip in a nervous manner. "I...just water is fine, thank you. If it's not too much trouble." Eve didn't want to be a bother, but she also felt the need to make this up to him, and perhaps apologizing and changing the subject would do the trick. Why was she feeling so on edge? "I'm sorry..."
Tumblr media
If not for his current position, Aksel probably would have found it to be a little more light - hearted and that wasn't Eve's fault, it was his own. With a devil always wanting something from him he found himself looking over his shoulder and now he was allowing himself to get a little closer to those around him he felt the need to watch their backs too.
Tumblr media
" I am not offended, " He offered her a smile as he turned away from his work to meet her gaze properly. " you just spooked me a little. I am easily spooked it seems. " Hands were held in the air when he stepped to one side. " You are welcome to check, I am going to get a drink - do you want one? "
