Fenrir, son of Loki, was a monstrous wolf. Due to the Gods’ knowledge of prophecies foretelling great trouble from Fenrir and his rapid growth, the gods bound him. En raged by his capture, the wolf bit off the hand of Tyr, whom he had trusted most. Fenrir is the father of the wolves Sköll and Hati Hródvitnisson.
Hati Hródvitnisson chases the moon across the night sky, just as his brother Sköll chases the sun during the day.
Until the time of Ragnarök when they will swallow these heavenly bodies, after which Fenrir will break free from his bonds and kill Odin. Vidar, son of Odin, will avenge his father’s death by stepping down with one foot on the lower jaw of the monster, grabbing its upper jaw in one hand and tearing its mouth apart.
