For the past few years, a government teacher at Smithfield High School, Virginia has been working on a special project to help support and aid victims of human trafficking with his students. 

The teacher, Mr. Matt Ployd, and his students hope to make a major change. Ployd’s previous classes created Monica’s Law, a bill that proposes new policies to provide aid for human trafficking victims and their families. 

His current students are working on getting this bill to Congress. They have the support of many politicians, governors, big news sources, and community members! Monica’s Law has been posted on the We the People website. 

If it gets 100,000 signatures in thirty days, it will be put on a special queue to be viewed by the White House.

Some hurricane tips from a South Floridian

I hope my followers in the Carolinas are staying safe. Hurricanes are no joke, BUT there are very simple and pragmatic ways to deal with them. Here are a few tips I have for you based on what happened with Irma last year: 1- Water The local news will constantly be telling you to buy tons of bottled water, and while it’s rare your water supply will actually be cut off in a hurricane, if you cannot get bottled water, just fill containers with tap water. If you can’t get bottled water, don’t panic. hell, you can put a trash bag in a clothes hamper and fill it up in your tub if you’re THAT worried. 2- Sand bags Maybe your local area will be handing out sand bags, maybe not, but again, not really worth the hassle. since they only give you 4 of ‘em. Buy some small, heavy duty black trash bags and fill them with sand instead, 3 or 4 per door, if you feel you’re at risk of minor flooding. 3- Food YOU WILL LOSE POWER FOR AT LEAST 2 DAYS. Get yourself a cooler and freeze stuff like meat before the hurricane. frozen meat and other frozen food in tightly sealed cooler should stay cool for a few days. Aside from that, try and use stuff you can cook on a grill, and keep in mind you don’t need to refrigerate stuff like eggs and drinks. 4- Assorted safety tips: If you’re using a generator be aware of CO2 poisoning,  Don’t use candles for light, they’ll heat your house up REAL quick, use electric lights (LED paper lanterns are perfect to keep on all day) Keep a radio handy to listen to the news, music, and other entertainment. Books and board games too. If you’re lucky enough to have an air conditioner running, especially a window unit, keep the room it’s in sealed, and try and have everyone sleep in that room at night if it’s hot otherwise. And finally, do not open the doors or windows when the storm is passing. the change in air pressure could break the glass, or make it impossible to close the door again. STAY SAFE!

This is from the forecast discussion of Major Hurricane Florence from this afternoon. As a meteorologist, when I saw this, my heart sank. They don’t use wording like this for every storm.

Florence is going to be a devastating. There will be huge amounts of flooding, both from inland rain and from costal storm surge. Winds are going to be some of the strongest you can get from a hurricane. People within the path of this storm could lose everything.

If you know anyone who lives on the North or South Carolina coast, tell them that if there’s an evacuation ordered, they need to get the hell out. Do not take chances with this one.
