WHG 21 Day 4
Somehow, after many rounds of testing, this was the best result I could get.
There were, in fact, several possibilities for what tributes could do during the feast. There were very much more than two (2). However, the Gamemakers did such an amazing job that almost every single tribute decides that they've had enough and they take the opportunity to leave. A hovercraft happily comes down to pick them up and they chill over snacks and jokes as they surrender the possibility of Ultimate Chosen One status.
Only two hardcore diehards remain to duke it out for the rest of the day! An epic battle for the ages! I'm sure the fight scenes and obstacle courses and foot races and battles of wits and struggles against an onslaught of weather and beasts and poisons are all incredibly cinematic, but in the end, the Writeblr Hunger Games Round 21 all comes down to one moment.
And that moment is my boy getting his just desserts for letting his greed get the better of him. You just had to be the best, buddy, and now you have to settle for third-degree burns and second place.
Congratulations to Cassian, the newly crowned Ultimate Chosen One! Your determination in the face of temptations and tribulations, your refusal to take the obvious, inconsequential, and easy way out, your willingness to sabotage your competitors, and your overall pluckiness and bravado have earned you the right to live rent-free in the heads of everyone across the land! Don't worry that they'll be rubbing their hands and plotting against you...You're a winner, and winners don't worry!
To all the writers who participated, thank you and I hope you've had a bit of fun. I promise I'll use way more filler characters next time so landslides like this don't interrupt our fun. Stay tuned for a convenient summary of the events, and keep writing! There is no deadline for how long you can take inspiration from this event and use it as a basis of fanfiction or collaboration. Go wild, have fun, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

WHG 21 Day 3
Due to the small cast size, we're actually about halfway through, which may sound like a relief to the already-suffering contestants, but for some, the worst has just begun.
Layla goes for the gold and gets only a searing fade-to-black, and the sky closes over Liz Bethany.
Drest and Viper are having none of this, Lucatet and Cassian are having a terrible time at this, and Daisy Belle is as usual having the time of her life in the death trap.
Uh, did I say death? We assure you that there are trapdoors under the Arena that will lead the contestants to safety...for sure...but they are still out of the competition!
We honor Layla and Liz Bethany as they safely make their way home.
Cassian catches a break while Rantha Cathartes and Safirel Beynleyra catch an L. Drest and Rod have rough sleep, Viper and Belle don't need it after the day they've already had, and...Chess somehow gets the jump on a hypervigilant telekinetic? Good for her, I guess!
Three thirds of the competitors remain, but the simulation refuses to see them all last another day. Gamemakers are brewing a Feast that will change the course of the Games...for better or for worse?

WHG 21 Day 2
Back in action for another day of surprises! The weather is looking partly cloudy with a chance of light showers and wicked flora and fauna!
For the record, I was referring to the bees and stinging insects, not the rubber ducks. Hmmm. Not sure which Gamemaker snuck that one in there.
Poor Glidon, though. Tough obstacle course, that one! Better luck in another story, champ.
I am very interested in what Viper and Lucatet had to talk about and what Safirel's escape room looked like. But before we can have a chance to dive deeper, it's time to honor our friends who have had to leave the competition today.
After the honorary cannon shot fades at dusk, the Games continue!
Oooh, and we see much less teamwork, a little more ruthlessness as the competition heats up! Chess and Cassian are left in the dark while Viper and Drest really have a bad night, not to mention the aforementioned fauna getting nasty!
More than 24 hours removed from meals on demand and the safety of walls, the tributes are feeling the pressure. Is a star rising among them? Or is this Chosen One Challenge merely a communal fall from grace? Our heroes' journey will go on tomorrow!

WHG 21 Day 1
The first day of the 21st round of the Writeblr Hunger Games begins! Our 12 contestants hoping to prove themselves and achieve great destinies are set on pedestals around a flat span of astroturf. In the center is a large cornucopia full of things they could possibly need as they fight for the title of Ultimate Chosen One over the next few days.
A minute counts down for them to take in their surroundings. A suspiciously picturesque forest lies in one direction, elegant plains to another, and brooding mountains to the north. The choices are endless, but in the end, only one fate will remain for each hopeful hero. Only one can be crowned victor. Which one will it be?
The first cannon blasts, and we begin to find out.
The excitement begins! Rod and Belle get a little too into the spirit of things, but we also see a whole lot of teamwork out of our little group! On the other hand, we have about half of our crew going in empty-handed, but hey, at least nobody dies--er, gets disqualified--right off the bat.
The high energy of the initial gathering fades as the tributes run in opposite directions, each finding their own fun. Natural-looking floors give way to mechanical rooms, trees twist like turrets at their roots, and alabaster tricks and traps interrupt the landscape.
Cassian, Viper, and Rod completely ignore all that really cool setup, but Rantha Cathartes and Safirel Beynleyra have a little more spunk! I fear Safirel may have inadvertently caused Chess to have a rough first day, and Layla and Liz Bethany have discovered one of the more combative traps, but the rest did a great job sticking together!
(Oh my gosh Daisy Belle is straight-up a tree person and I set her on fire I am so sorry honey)
It's been a healthy first day as everyone hangs on like champs for those first twelve hours! No cannons mark the day's losses, because we're all winners here, haha. Oh, but for how long? How courageous and determined will you stay when the sun goes down and the nightmares come out to play?
Night is all about reflections and facing the things that haunt you. In Viper and Liz's case, those things are just other people. (Layla, seriously? Insult to injury?) Actually, Chess catches a break that Drest would be jealous of, and while everyone was able to overcome their demons tonight, I'd say Cassian came out of this evening as the biggest winner. Rantha Cathartes...at least you got some sleep.
With many tributes shaken yet victorious and others hungry but unharmed, it's still anyone's game. Until tomorrow, my friends...May the odds be ever in your favor.

In spite of delays, the show will go on...tomorrow! It took a lot of setup, but the simulation has been run. Fates have already been decided--but these characters already live with that assumption. All that remains is to see what happens.

Round 21 Prompts
The Big Day
It’s business as normal in your character’s hometown, although there is a bit of excitement. There’s some sort of event going on in a faraway land, but people can’t enter to win; they have to be chosen. Many people, including your character, have been pre-selected as candidates, and soon, they’ll have to sit in a gathering place to hear the name(s) be called. Has your character done any investigation about the event? How do they feel about it?
The Reaping
Up on the stage, a representative from Panem in colorful clothes explains the gauntlet ahead. Instead of praising the Capitol or getting hyped about bloodshed, the representative expresses the need for a hero and a competition to find out who that is. (Perhaps, if that fits better with your story, this “hero” business comes with a layered threat like they really mean “scapegoat,” or perhaps the whole thing is a bit confusing.) A name is called. (Optional bonus: And no one is allowed to volunteer in their place.)
The Visit
After a quick walk, teleport, or wormhole to the nearest train station, a bullet train full of food whisks your character towards the opulent Capitol. Trains may make multiple stops and pick up other characters, too. A glamorous Capitol escort wants to talk about social strategy, how to look good on the millions of cameras, and every competitor is entitled to a mentor who can advise them on what to face in the Arena.
The Chariots
In order to initially introduce the characters to the world, the Capitol escort has already told what they know of your character to a design team who has been prepping an outfit that is intended to represent your character and/or the sort of place they came from. Then they will arbitrarily be assigned to teams, and those teams will ride together atop chariots led by horses down the main street of the Capitol, where thousands of cameras and cheering fans are watching.
The Training
Generally the longest portion, this is where characters are allowed to interact with each other, sit in their upscale suites, eat whatever food they want, sleep in cushy beds, train with top-tier weapons, test themselves on obstacle courses, learn about various wildernesses, and/or discuss strategy with their mentors and escorts. There’s a sense that this whole thing might not be as safe and death-free as promised, but everyone is assured they can bow out whenever they choose. This time, they will not perform in front of judges, and they will go into the Arena without a score to speak for them.
The Interview
This time, your character has much more input on their wardrobe choices as they once again stand before the entire world. A performative, ostentatious man called Caesar Flickerman will get five minutes to interview your character in a bombastic and flattering fashion. He’ll do his best, anyway. It’s up to your character to decide on the degree to which they cooperate. Tomorrow, the Games begin. Any last words?

Writeblr Hunger Games Round 21
It's happening! Get ready for the Ultimate Chosen One Challenge!
Reminder of the Basics: Writers submit their characters as potential candidates and then I put them in the Brant Steele Hunger Games Simulator and share the results. In the meantime, the writers can write and share stories (from giant text posts to just a couple of sentences) about their characters being in the Games!
Note: characters’ canonical powers, strengths, abilities, disabilities, and weaknesses will not be taken into account by the simulator. Every outcome is random and everyone has an equal chance for victory or disaster.
How we’ll do things this time: each writer who wants to participate can submit up to three original characters, preferably ones whom they assign "Chosen One" status to for any given reason, they would like to see fight in the Arena. Please reblog this post only or else send this blog an ask/message with your characters’ information.
In your submissions, please include your characters’:
Name (what you would like to see them repeated as over and over in the simulation)
Pronouns
A little bit of background as to why they're the Chosen One (just your favorite, fated by prophecy, turns out to be a hero...)
Rather than having a standard round with deaths, we will tweak the arena events to things like "Character X and Y are forced into an obstacle course. X wins but is injured" or "Character Z faces holograms of their worst fears. They surrender and leave the Arena" until one champion is left standing!

Round 21?
Ignore the fluttering of pages as I dust off my notes to check whether the number is right...yes, 21!
Attention, writers! Are you tired of That Character living in your head rent-free? Alternatively, are the people of That Character's world or immediate surroundings tired of them living in their heads rent-free? Are ya ready to make them pay their dues by chucking them into a Hunger Games simulator and seeing who wins, with optional Hunger Games AU writing prompts along the way?
That’s right! We are NOT dead, so if a few people are interested, it's time for another round of the Writeblr Hunger Games! For those who don't know, the basic format for the WHG is that writers submit their original characters as potential candidates. Then I put them in the Brant Steele Hunger Games Simulator and share the results of them fighting each other to the death.
This round's going to look a little different. Instead of random characters strictly fighting for their lives, you would choose your most special someones to compete in the True Chosen One Challenge. Whether your character has a canonical destiny, a headcanoned prophecy, or just way too much of your brainspace, this competition will force them to face their fate. Whoever rises to the top shall win the title of True Chosen One! (Chosen by the simulator algorithm, anyway.)
This post is just for y'all to let me know if you're interested, share the news with anyone you think might be interested, and let me know any thoughts or suggestions you have. If more than a few people are willing to at least throw a character into the ring (no writing necessary), then I'll soon tag interested folks with a post with more explanation on how to submit a character and what happens from there.
This is intended to be a somewhat more lighthearted, faster-paced WHG round, so there's no expectation of intense participation if this time of the year gets hectic.

WHG 20 - Day 16
A cold wind blows through an arena that feels more like a graveyard.
The traps break loose. Birds swarm from nowhere, but they spread too far and wide to do damage. The ground breaks and cracks open, spewing flames, and machines rattle and rock temperatures up and down in random pockets. Lightning punches through the upper hull of the arena, blasting trees and lighting even more fires.
Amid all of this, Yuen somehow manages to die...of hunger. At least it’s fitting for the name?
And Maura prepares to defend herself. Initial fear overcome, part of the final three, she decides not to go down without a fight.
One more distorted cannon blast signals Yuen’s descent into the night.
Rain crashes over the arena, boiling in some areas and freezing others. Prowling, watching her back, Maura fails to watch her feet as the treacherous ground gives way, plunging her to a watery grave, ice forming so fast over the surface that she can’t break free.
But Lyra and Chess have had enough. Their shaky alliance has come to a moment of truth. This place is shaking itself apart. They demand that either a hovercraft pick them both up right now or they will let the arena claim both of them, proving to all of Panem that the Capitol doesn’t even have its own creations under control.
This works.

WHG 20 - Day 15
Without her rival, Maura goes from predator to prey as Chess has had enough and puts up a surprising fight. Under a sky so thick with clouds it looks like the sun hasn’t risen, Yuen and Lyra huddle and hang on for dear life.
Night falls, and no anthem plays, no cannons fire to honor the dead, no faces appear in hologram across the sky one more time.
Everyone turns against Maura as the only person with any kills--even Yuen, who has been relatively harmless up til now. Chess and Lyra continue their alliance, and it’s pretty clear which way the needle of fate is turning. But unexpected grooves can cause the needle to skip, the metaphors to mix.
Four tributes left. After two weeks and some change, it’s impossible to tell if the entire nation is hanging on every second or if no one is bothering to watch anymore, or if Panem even exists beyond beyond the cliffs and sputtering force fields.
One thing’s for sure...this can’t last much longer. Tomorrow, the storm will break.

WHG 20 - Day 14
No natural food is left in a vicious and collapsing arena, which feels like a heavy-handed metaphor for the unnecessary cruelty and lack of long-term viability of an iron fist of control, but maybe that’s just me. The arena sends the maze hurdling towards the dome in ragged jolts, too fast, but Lyra and Maura manage to drop out; the sun causes hallucinations at random rather than just at sunset, painting the world a constant ruddy orange; and flames smother an entire corner of the arena, leaving nothing behind of trees, mutts, or our dear friend Steele.
That evening, cannon shots memorialize the dead. One district falls in one day.
Okay, apparently forget the fact that donations get more expensive with time. People are clearly betting their life savings on the consequences of this event. All four tributes have now received at least one explosive over the course of the Games! I don’t blame Yuen for staying vigilant or Maura for getting scared, though she’s the only killer now that her rivalry with Steele has come to a bitter, unfitting end.
That’s one of the real lessons of the Hunger Games. There is no poetic justice, no victory in vengeance, no satisfaction. You get the death you’re given, and it could be anything.

WHG 20 - Day 13
On this unlucky day with its terrible weather and its failing camera systems and crumbling infrastructure made more for intensity than durability, Maura has been armed with a second bomb, unless she used the first one to divert Yuen’s attention a few days ago. Someone thinks Chess would prefer a different advantage as various, extremely generous late-Games sponsors cash in for the incredibly expensive gifts, leaving the other four out in the cold, but they seem capably of making due with each other.
Three days, no deaths.
More generous sponsors, more evasions of traps...oh, but what’s this? Tired of waiting, the mutts sprint from their exit points an hour earlier than expected, and the section fails to rise and isolate itself, so they roam the arena freely in packs, chasing poor Cian to their death.
Brutal! Someone should make a villain origin story out of that one. Until then...watch your backs, you five remaining tributes, because your days are numbered.

WHG 20 - Day 12
Food is scarce and caves crumble, forcing Chess to make her own shelter and Cian to be exposed to a few itchy bites. Maura and Steele’s rivalry deepens, but there’s no blood in it. Yet...
In an interesting turn of events, Cian is quite upset by their bug bites and Maura has a mind like a Steele trap, I’m sorry, steel trap when it comes to getting a leg up on the competition, but everyone else is too exhausted to fight and gives up on the competition for a while. Peace and harmony. You love to see it--unless you’re a Gamemaker whose paycheck and possibly life depends on the ratings...
Or haven’t you heard? A widespread truce is a sure way to turn the arena against you.

WHG 20 - Day 11
Okay, I lied. Unless you find Chess joining the Explosive Ownership Squad, not much interesting happens. Nobody has died within the last 24 hours. Oh, I’m sorry--26 hours. The long days begin to take their toll on the tributes, and survive though they might, they’ll need all their wits about them as the arena throws everything it has at them.
Frost blankets the forest floor, spreading beyond its designated zone and killing fruiting trees, crystalizing the air. The hot rocks barely stave off hypothermia. False fires attempt to lure tributes out of their hiding places, but Cian stays sharp. Steele doesn’t even seem bothered.
But how long can our heroes keep making the Games seem like child’s play before the Games start playing them?

WHG 20 - Day 10
Ten days into the Games and our brave tributes have struggled, stabbed, and starved their way to surviving this long, outwitting traps and tributes to stay alive. But now it’s time for a hallmark of the Hunger Games. Now that the original supplies from the Cornucopia are used up and gifts are far too expensive for sponsors to send anymore, the traps are paused and the center of the arena is filled with necessities.
Time to see how they behave.
A few impertinent tributes neglect the invitation, but Steele finally ups his kill count to 2, and Maura finally joins him! And so Triel and Hadrien drop off our leaderboards while Yuen quietly takes advantage of the fighting.
Lucky Yuen sleeps off his victory, Chess sleeps off...not much, Cian continues to opt out of the entire Hunger Games experience, Lyra evades avian annihilation, and most importantly, our two killers are apparently beginning to circle each other like black holes! Oooh, someone break out the curly straws and popcorn!
I mean, uh, let’s be respectful for a moment.
Oho, someone very rich would like to reward Maura for her valiance today! Steele is starting to feel the heat, unlike Cian, and while two expert survivors decide to team up, the fellow who has lost his hearing twice screams for help. I’m not sure why. Maybe he senses that someone else now has explosives besides him?
Who will set off the bombs first? We absolutely won’t find out the answer to that question tomorrow because by then, the generator will have already forgotten anyone has them, but something interesting will surely happen to our six remaining tributes, so stay tuned!
