Making a Difference: Food for Life in NYC
Making a Difference: Food for Life in NYC

Earlier this year, the kids and I visited Manhattan for some college tours. It was mid-January, bitter cold, but very little snow was on the ground. Since we like to stay in different parts of the city each time we go to get a better feel for Manhattan as a whole, we chose to stay on the lower east side this time, at a place called Sanctu…

Planning a Cross Country Road Trip
Planning a Cross Country Road Trip
Tumblr media
People have been road tripping across the United States since the days of covered wagons. But ever since Route 66 connected the Atlantic to the Pacific, it’s gotten way easier to hit the open road and see this big beautiful country.
Our family has traveled up the west coast from Southern California to Canada, driven through the Inland Northwest states of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Utah.…

Free Fun in San Francisco
Free Fun in San Francisco
San Francisco is an expensive place to live, and it’s not cheap to visit either. But like most big cities, there’s always a lot to do, and if you know how to look for deals, there’s free fun to be found.
With more than 50 hills within the city limits(not even kidding!!), San Francisco probably won’t ever make my list of most accessible cities. That doesn’t stop me from visiting, though. It just…

San Francisco, the city by the bay, where it’s cold, even in the summer 😄 Visiting California is never cheap, but there are actually a lot of free things to do in San Francisco. We explore a bunch of the most famous ones and share accessibility tips for each place in this week’s blog post. You might even find a few activities you didn’t know about! Link in bio. How do you celebrate 20 years of wizardry? With a visit to Hogsmeade at Universal Hollywood. This wheelchair friendly theme park makes it easy to get around, even if you’ve had one too many butterbeers :) (at Universal Studios Hollywood) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnk9fVehn7s/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xldyhyquno89

Harry Potter Goes Hollywood
Harry Potter Goes Hollywood
Entering Hogsmeade
Twenty years ago the United States was introduced to the Dursleys, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Hermione, the Weasleys, and the boy wizard, Harry Potter. I didn’t even have kids at the time, but I was captivated by the story.
Fast forward to now, and my children are just as obsessed as I am with all things Potter. Four years ago we visited Universal Orlando (unfortunately just a few…

Rafting the Canadian Rockies
Rafting the Canadian Rockies
The summer after my daughter turned ten, we went on our first rafting trip as a family. Since then, it’s become sort of an annual tradition. So far, we’ve rafted in Montana, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming and Idaho. This summer I asked the kids where they thought we should try for our white water adventure. They chose Canada. Bless them 🙂

Vegan in the City: Spokane, Washington
Vegan in the City: Spokane, Washington
With a metro population of nearly half a million, Spokane is the second largest city in the state of Washington. It’s also the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis. (Yes, some parts of the northwest are still that underpopulated!) As the number of people living here grows, so does the list of restaurants that offer vegan options. There are the national go to spots: Panera, MOD Pizza, and…

Outdoor Fun Near the Santa Ynez Valley
Outdoor Fun Near the Santa Ynez Valley
If you took my advice and started planning a trip to Solvang, you’re probably wondering what there is to do outside of this small town. Luckily, you don’t have to go far to find outdoor adventure in this area, and a lot of it is free. Nojoqui Falls It may seem hard to believe, but if you continue driving down Alisal, past the village and past the guest ranch, you’ll find a beautiful park and…

Sightseeing in Solvang
Fifty miles up the 101 freeway from coastal Santa Barbara you’ll find yourself surrounded by ranches, vineyards and equestrian facilities, rolling hills dotted with majestic oak trees. The Santa Ynez Valley has a rich history that spans from the Chumash Indians and early ranchers to the burgeoning wine and tourism industries. Five small towns with distinct personalities make up the Valley and the…

After living in the Santa Ynez Valley for almost twenty years, it feels weird going back as a visitor. Solvang always makes me smile, and not just because of the sunny skies. Seeing old friends at The Book Loft or the Solvang Bakery always makes the visit fun. As for those people slowing down traffic in the four seater surreys? I still have no patience for you — get out of the road!! (at Solvang, California)

Christmas in Leavenworth
I’m like a little kid when it comes to Christmas lights and celebrations. There is something magical about this time of year with the special treats, traditions, music, decorations, and of course, the lights. Leavenworth, Washington is one of the places in the Pacific Northwest known for celebrating the holidays in a big way. Country Living Magazine gave it the number one spot on its list of…

The Best (and worst) Parts of Traveling
There’s a popular expression about the journey being more important than the destination. But when it comes to travel, I’d argue that this statement isn’t always true. Sometimes, it’s the complete opposite. For our family, a lot of road trips are just as much fun as the final destination. I love stopping at oddball locations, checking out things that make each area special. Plus, having hours on…

The day after Thanksgiving is when the Christmas season kicks into high gear in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with the annual Festival of Lights. It starts with a lighted parade (Santa rides by on a lit up firetruck “pulled” by glowing reindeer!), and includes fireworks and a tree lighting ceremony. There’s a real sense of hope and unity as everyone lights candles and sings “Silent Night” with the Dickens carolers. Read more about it on my blog post at https://www.thewheeltraveler.com. If you like fireworks, be sure to scroll through to the last InstaPhoto for a short video with lots of boom :) (at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho)

Lighting the Holidays in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
Lighting the Holidays in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
When you think of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, what comes to mind? The lake? Potatoes? (FYI: nobody grows potatoes in northern Idaho!) How about Christmas? Every year, on the day after Thanksgiving, this little city puts on a parade and holiday light show that rivals any big city offering. This year marked the 26th anniversary of the event, and it just keeps getting better. USA Today took notice a few…

10 Reasons to Love NYC
I was a child the first time I visited New York. I was born in a small Ohio town where everyone knew each other, yards weren’t separated by fences and most homes were a single story with a basement. New York City was a huge culture shock. I don’t remember much about it other than thinking the buildings were tall, the city was loud, and everything felt really crowded. These days, New York is one…
