Cool Smash Predictions #7: Paper Mario
Tumblr media
Fun fact, Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door is one of my all time favourite video games! I’m actually kind of a huge fan of Paper Mario, like the entire internet is surely. And yeah, I’m definitely also disappointed in the direction Intelligent Systems went with the franchise, but I definitely don’t plan on showing my bias here! All five games will have representation! With that in mind, let’s check out this paper thin combatant!
The History
The first Paper Mario game was actually released as “Mario Story” in Japan in 2000 for the Nintendo 64. It’s aesthetics were comparable to that of a storybook, so the localization team took it upon themselves to dub the game “Paper Mario” when it finally released in the rest of the world in 2001. The game is a spiritual successor to 1996′s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and involves Mario traveling the Mushroom Kingdom to seek the power of the seven Star Spirits, helped along the way by eight Partner Characters, each being a traditional Mario enemy. The game had very charming writing, and was praised for being one of the few actually good RPGs on the N64.
2004′s Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for the Nintendo Gamecube expanded on the gameplay that made the original such a charming title, while offering a brand new area of the Mushroom World for Mario to explore, while also having some of the most stellar writing in video game history. 2007′s Super Paper Mario meanwhile, took the Paper Mario assets and crafted a brand new universe hopping platforming RPG hybrid adventure. Super Paper Mario’s writing was praised, but the idea of switching the game to a 2D Platformer was received mixely among fans.
After a five year wait, Paper Mario was brought back on the 3DS with 2012′s Paper Mario Sticker Star, an action adventure game that ditched a lot of the mechanics and worldbuilding of previous Mario RPGs in favour of modernizing the franchise with designs straight out of the New Super Mario Bros line of games. While it and it’s 2016 Sequel Paper Mario Colour Splash have its fans, they are generally seen as a huge departure to what made the Paper Mario franchise great and wonderful. Oh and they also had the franchise cross over with the Mario & Luigi games in 2016′s Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam for the 3DS. Paper Mario also got a stage in 2014′s Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.
Smash Statistics
I definitely want Paper Mario to be one of the most floaty and light characters in the game. It only makes sense that a Paper fighter gets knocked away by a light breeze easy. I don’t know if he’d be the same as Jigglypuff, but Paper Mario is going to be a light character. Though that means he’ll have decent percent output to compensate. If Paper Mario is going to be in this game, there’s no sense in making him a Mario clone. The one thing Paper Mario has over the original is his reliance on his trusty hammer. All three of Paper Mario’s Smash Attacks will rely on the Hammer, a forward Swing, an overhead swing, and a downward swing. His dash attack will be Paper Mario’s Spinning Slide he had in original Paper Mario that helped with fast travel. With Paper Mario’s specials, I’ve come up with four attacks that reference the entire franchise. His Neutral Special being a very familiar move from Sticker Star, the Fireball. I thought a lot about this, but having the Fireball would be one small link he has with regular Mario. Paper Mario chucks up to two Fireballs, though these have enough range that they bounce usually twice. If Mario presses the attack button upon impact of a Fireball, it’ll do extra damage. You’ll usually hear a sound effect with your action command. I’ve thought about replacing this move with the Hammer Throw from Paper Mario 1 or the Ice Ball also from Sticker Star, so maybe they’d be alt specials. Paper Mario’s Side B will be the Airplane Curse, temporarily transforming him into a fast moving Paper Airplane. While using this move, Paper Mario can tilt his angle up or down, and it’s primarily used as a horizontal recovery. Though when Paper Mario folds himself back out, the airplane will do a little drill like move at the end, which causes minor damage. Using the Ultra Boots, Paper Mario’s Up Special is the Spring Jump. Hold the Button to charge, then spring the paper plumber up in the air. Finally, the Down Special is a powerful move, the Bob-Omb Toss. Paper Mario will hold a Paper Bob-Omb in the air, upon initiation, and letting go of the special button will drop the Bob-Omb, as it takes a few steps forward. The Bob-Omb will explode in a couple seconds, and it’s wind up time is a struggle, but this move deals fantastic knockback when it connects. For the Final Smash, Paper Mario uses a Thing Sticker of The Goat from Sticker Star. It chews up opponents and spits them out. It’s the best Final Smash and the internet doesn’t stop memeing about it for years to come.
Home Stage
That stage back in Smash 3DS was actually terrible, if we’re going to be honest. Yeah, Flavio’s Ship was a nice throwback, but URGH what was that Bowser’s Castle section?!? It wasn’t a very functional stage, as every CPU ended up just dying instantaneously. Ideally a good Paper Mario stage could be the Grand Stage that Paper Mario battles happen on in the Thousand Year Door. The Background Props could rotate out each match, or even mid match. The crowds of Paper Mushroom Kingdom Residents could throw helpful items at the losers, while throwing rocks and hammers at the ones in the lead. There’s loads of different tunes from Mario RPGs in general you could have for it, pulling from Mario & Luigi and Mario RPG could be neat as well. If you wanted to actually make a Paper Mario location, how about Toad Town from Paper Mario 1? With all the cute toad Residents cheering you on in the background. Maybe have the Koopa Bros come in as obstacles. Or hell, Bowser’s floating castle from Paper Mario is pretty iconic. Shooting Star Summit could have some nice Cameos from the Seven Star Spirits, or if you wanted to use the Chamber of the Thousand Year Door, that’s also a pretty iconic option.
Reasons For!
-Paper Mario has stood the test of time as one of the most beloved Mario subseries, The Passion for the franchise overshadows most other Mario games, and it’s only really had trophies and a shitty stage representing it in the big crossover title. -Paper Mario’s general design works superbly as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Flat characters like Mr. Game and Watch have shown that the concept can work. Furthermore, Paper Mario’s moveset potential would easily make him different from Mario and Dr. Mario. -They are still makin’ games featuring Paper Mario, his last game was only a year and a half ago.
Reasons Against!
-Another Goddamn Mario? While his moveset might be different, variants of existing characters have never been popular. And since not only does Mario have his semi-clone Luigi and his full-clone Dr. Mario on the roster, having a third character named “Mario” might seem a bit much. -Not only that, but Paper Mario would be the eight character under the Mario franchise, which seems like a bit much if we’re to believe that the balance of characters from different franchises matters. As much as he represents something different, it’s still under the Mario franchise. -Sticker Star and Colour Splash are generally looked down upon throughout the Nintendo Fandom at large, Colour Splash didn’t even hit a Million units sold (though it was released late into the WiiU’s lifespan, on a console that really didn’t have any legs to stand on). Why represent a franchise that isn’t selling sterling with a Playable Character when franchises that are selling sterling could get more people excited.
Well, that’s Paper Mario. I’d love Smash Representation, but who fucking knows at this point, my dude. I’d take one Paper Mario over a thousand Waluigis though, that’s for goddamn sure. What’s up with Waluigi fans in 2018 man, thinking they own everything. Your character is a Meme, go play Mario Power Tennis and leave us alone.
*Ahem*, sorry. Uh, see you next week hopefully.

Cool Smash Predictions #6: Simon Belmont
Tumblr media
Today we’re going to do my first 3rd Party Cool Smash Prediction! Introducing, from the world of Castlevania, Simon Belmont! If you’re under the age of 30 you might not have heard of him, only being the legacy star of the first two Castlevania games (as well as the retelling on SNES) but he’s just as influential to the NES era gamers as Mega Man is! But alas, let’s check out this whip slinger and see what he can bring to the Smash table.
The History
1986′s Castlevania stars Simon Belmont of the Belmont Clan as exactly one hundred years after his Descendant slayed the Prince of Darkness Count Dracula himself. The Vampire’s Castle has appeared yet again as Dracula is once more brought back into the world. Armed with his trusty Vampire Killer whip, Simon steps into Castlevania, hoping to live up to his family’s legendary degree as a Vampire Hunter. This story was retold in 1991′s Super Castlevania IV
Before he was slain, Dracula placed a curse on Simon. Seven years later, in 1987′s Castlevania 2: Simon’s Curse, the curse began to ravage the Vampire Hunter’s body, and Simon had to once again fight against his arch nemesis. By traveling the world and reuniting the Count’s remains, Simon was able to free himself from the curse after reviving Dracula and fighting him yet again. It’s important to note that Simon’s one of many of the Belmont clan to fight Dracula, as the series spans different generations and various encounters with the revived vampire. While the series has had various protagonists, including some not even of the Belmont clan like Dracula’s son Alucard, and Japanese High Schooler Soma Crutz, Simon Belmont’s quest started the franchise, and the Castlevania franchise’s roots are firmly ingrained in the NES’s life cycle. As such, I think he’s possibly the best character to represent the franchise.
Smash Statistics
An important detail I started thinking about when coming up with Simon’s Smash Profile is his design. Sakurai usually chooses the most iconic look of each character when added, as seen with Pac-Man and Mega Man. If Simon Belmont was to be added, it’d be imperative that the Box Art design of Simon from the first and fourth games be the main design, but I wouldn’t want to leave out the excellent redesign for Castlevania Chronicles that Konami has used on multiple occasions to represent the character. Like Cloud and his Advent Children design, the Red Haired Chronicles Design would also be selectable.
Tumblr media
Now, onto his moves. Simon fights with his whip, the Vampire Killer. All of his Normals will be performed with the whip, including Tilts and Smash Attacks. You’d have to include the ability to rotate the whip freely (similar to Sheik’s side special in Melee) after an attack, maybe a lingering effect if you keep holding the attack button. I’d want Simon himself to feel heavy, probably slower in the air. His attacks would have long reach, but they wouldn’t be as powerful as someone like Ike or Ganondorf, to compensate. Simon will be able to change his Neutral Special using his Down Special, allowing him to freely rotate between the four Sub Weapons in Castlevania 1. The Dagger will shoot in front of Simon, allowing him to toss a quick and easy projectile. However, the Dagger isn’t exactly that powerful, nor does it really give out any knockback. The Axe shoots in an arc, and is much more powerful, though the knockback is the greatest at the very bottom of the arc. The Cross acts as a boomerang, flying in front of Simon and then returning to him. Though if Simon jumps over the Cross, it’ll keep going off screen. Finally, the Holy Water will travel not too far in front of Simon, and create a puddle of flames on the ground. You can use this special to entrap opponents. Like Zero Suit Samus in Brawl, who also used a whip-esque weapon, Simon’s Up and Side specials will be used as Tether moves that latch onto the edge of the stage if he’s falling. These moves would have an extended range when in the air. They could also be used maybe as “grapple” moves? If Simon latches on to an opponent, he could essentially use them as a footstool to jump off of. I don’t know how BALANCED that would be, but it’d give him a unique way of recovering. Simon’s Final Smash would use the final Sub Weapon, the Stop Watch. He’d freeze time, allowing the Vampire Hunter to get as much damage wracked up as he can.
Home Stage
Nothing is more iconic than Castlevania’s Stairway to Dracula’s Room. Maybe have that iconic stairway in the background of the stage, while the fighting takes place in front of it. You may be able to spot Dracula and one of the few other protagonists (Trevor Belmont, Alucard, Ricter Belmont) in heated battle. The stage would have candles, containing items if you break them with an attack. Also, among the stage’s themes would be “Vampire Killer”, “Bloody Tears”, and “Theme of Simon Belmont”. Those three HAVE to be remixed in some way.
Reasons For!
-Castlevania is an iconic franchise that got its start on the NES and Famicom. It and Mega Man are usually considered the most important 3rd Party games from that era, and Mega Man’s already in Smash so I mean. -Unlike other 3rd Party franchises that sort of left Nintendo, Konami and the Castlevania franchise have put multiple games among the entire Nintendo catalogue of consoles. Most recently was 2013′s Castlevania Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate for the 3DS. -Simon’s whip and Sub Weapon switching would provide a great and unique moveset that only one other character sort of fits, and even that can be differentiated from.
Reasons Against!
-Konami
Well, that was a bummer. It’s a shame too, I sure wish Castlevania was in better hands! But alas, we’ll probably never see the Vampire Hunter in Smash. Anyway, I’m planning on getting real two dimensional with my next Smash Prediction, so I hope to see you there!

Cool Smash Predictions #5: Breidablik
Tumblr media
I totally lied there’s no balloons in this one I’m very sorry
hey wow we’re doing this, this isn’t actually a fighter. It’s actually...an item. Yeah, I know serious Smashers turn off items right away but shut up this is my thing. Fire Emblem actually hasn’t had a dedicated item, despite being a very item heavy franchise. I guess because _most_ Fire Emblem items are weapons, and having realistic swords and axes and stuff would be a little wonky. However, I do think the franchise needs some representation in that area of Smash. So we’re going to discuss my Pokeball-esque idea of a brand new item: The Breidablik!
The History
The Breidablik was introduced in 2017′s Fire Emblem Heroes for IOS and Mobile Devices. It’s a holy weapon in the Askrian Kingdom that allows the wielder to summon legendary warriors known as Heroes at the cost of Orbs. The main character (you) is gifted this by Order of Heroes leader Anna after they appear from the Breidablik themselves.Alongside Anna, and the Askrian Prince and Princess Alfonse and Sharena, the main character uses the Breidablik to fight back against the Emblian Kingdom.
It’s essentially a gatcha gun. You put money into it, and it gives you a random hero.
Smash Statistics
Alright so hey how does the Breidablik work? Well, items in Smash typically are sorted into different groups on how they are used. The Pokeball for instance is a Throw item, while as something like the Home Run Bat is a Bludgeoning item. The Breidablik is a Projectile Item, similar to the Ray Gun or the Fire Flower. You get one shot, the Breidablik will fire a single orb. When it lands, the orb will vanish and a hero will appear. Enemies will take damage from getting hit by the orb, but not a lot, and it’ll usually fall to the ground shortly after. The orb itself is also a catchable object, and opponents have a chance to steal your hero if they manage to snag your one shot.
Each orb has a different aura once it’s summoned, similar to FEH itself. You can SORT OF predict what hero will show up based on the colour of the orb the Breidablik shoots. Red Orbs have a hero who uses a Sword, Green orbs have Heroes who uses Axes, Blue have Lances, and Gray have special heroes who could use Bows, Knives, stalves, or Dragonstones. Mages, however, will usually correspond to a colour based on their magic tome.
The Roster
So hey, what Heroes will be summonable? I think some people would prefer a wide variety of Heroes from thoughout the franchise, but I personally think we should get a few Heroes from each of the playable character’s games. I’m going to focus on Marth’s Archanea, Ike’s Tellius, Robin’s Ylisse, and Corrin’s Hoshido and Nohr when I design the summoning pool, while also including a wide variety of classes and character archetypes.
Caeda
Tumblr media
The Princess of the Island of Talys, Marth’s Fiancee, and the first ever Pegasus Knight in Fire Emblem. Caeda will divebomb the stage on her flying steed, swooping opponents with her Wing Spear. Her Pegasus’ wings have a windbox, that will push people away.
Takumi
Tumblr media
Corrin’s younger brother and a Prince of Hoshido, Takumi will shoot a rapid fury of Arrows from his Fujin Yumi. This skilled archer will aim his yumi upwards as a final parting gift, and rain down arrows. It’s only quick, slice damage...but it adds up quite quickly.
The Black Knight
Tumblr media
One of the Four Riders of Daein, and the murderer of Ike’s father, The Black Knight uses his blessed Alondite to shoot powerful shockwaves, up to four or five. His Warp Powder allows him to teleport around the arena too, and none shall survive a one on one confrontation with the Black Knight.
Lyn
Tumblr media
Lyn herself will be moved from the Assist Trophies to the Breidablik. Her functionality is essentially the same though, watch out for her powerful Sol Katti strike.
Tharja
Tumblr media
The Plegian Dark Mage who has quite the obsession with Robin will be using a powerful Flux magic spell. The orbs of dark magic burrow around her on the ground, and pop up underneath opponents.
Camus
Tumblr media
One of Marth’s most fierce opponents, the perfect soldier of Grust Camus will appear on horseback wielding the legendary Gradvius. He’ll trample any who get in his way, and finish his attack with a mighty throw of his lance.
Soren
Tumblr media
Ike’s trusted Tactician is also a talented Wind Mage! He can summon up to four clusters of wind that cause rapidfire damage. For anyone not in the thick of the attack, these gusty attacks have some unpredictable windboxes, and are better left avoided.
Azura
Tumblr media
To round out our list, Corrin’s Advisor and Mysterious Plot Device Azura will be making her grand stand to Smash though the Breidablik. The minute you hear her song “Lost in Thoughts All Alone”, you better be ready to enjoy a sizable power boost. Not only will your attack power be considerably boosted, but Azura’s song also boosts knockback on all attacks. Though the benefit is for ALL players.
Phew, glad I got that out of my system. I have some more Breidablik ideas, but I will hold onto them for a part two somewhere down the line. You think you’d be okay with a Summoning Item for Fire Emblem characters in Smash?
My schedule is changing a bit, so I’m probably going to have to cut these down to one a week. Maybe two if you’re lucky. I’m going to try and find a really good Newcomer to do next time!!! A really good one!!!!!!

Cool Smash Predictions #4: Poipole
Tumblr media
Hello! We’re back with another Cool Smash Prediction! Last week I was kind of in a bad place, so I took a bit to gather my thoughts. But we’re back! Today, I’m looking at a rather unique Pokemon from the seventh generation, introduced in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. #803, the Poison Pin Pokemon Poipole!
The History:
We have to travel back in time, to 2016′s Pokemon Sun and Moon for the 3DS. While Poipole didn’t make it’s debut in Sun and Moon, I do have to make a special mention that a new classification of Pokemon debuted here in this game - the Ultra Beasts. These mysterious alien creatures were featured heavily in the plot, being essentially aliens from a place called “Ultra Space”. You end up going into Ultra Space once to fight the big boss of the game, and it only really consisted of a single corridor.
2017′s Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon for the 3DS did expand upon Ultra Space, while adding a handful of new Ultra Beasts, one of which goes by the codename UB Adhesive. This purple little creature is one of the more abundant Ultra Beasts, residing in Ultra Megalopolis and treated as a Starter Pokemon for the residents. Poipole currently is the only Ultra Beast capable of evolution, as it evolves into Naganadel when learning Dragon Pulse and leveling up.
It’s also really darn cute holy shit.
Smash Statistics:
Poipole will be the first non-fully evolved Pokemon after Squirtle and Ivysaur to join the fight. It’s also the first pixielike Pokemon to join Smash too. I’d say it floats above the air when running, probably playfully bouncing in place for its idle animations. His attacks would have cute hitboxes, using his small tail and his big head. I’d say Poipole would have great air mobility and jumping power, but its speed wouldn’t be that great. Well, until it’s passive ability sparks in. Poipole has the “Beast Boost” passive ability in the Pokemon Games, a unique ability given to all Ultra Beasts. Whenever an Ultra Beast KOs a Pokemon, its Beast Boost ability raises its highest stat. While Poipole has balanced stats in Pokemon, I’m going to use Beast Boost to raise it’s speed. So while Poipole might start off kinda slow, if it gets the right KOs, we could see it zipping around with style. However, Beast Boost will fade away if Poipole itself gets KO’d. A talented Poipole player will be able to make the most out of its temporary speed gain. For its Specials, Poipole’s going all in on its poison typing. His Neutral Special will be Toxic, a move that bleches some venomous fluid in front of Poipole. It’ll be a laggy move, but if it hits the opponent, there’s a chance they’ll grow a flower on their head and get the Garbage Block status like Lip’s Stick provides. When the opponent is Flowered, Poipole can use its Side Special Venoshock. It’s a purple projectile technique that does more knockback when the enemy has a flower. Poipole’s Up B is the powerful Fell Stinger, which has Poipole use it’s spike on its head to pierce an opponent upwards. Finally, Poipole’s Down B is a flurry of adorable Poison Jabs using it’s little arms. Poipole’s Final Smash could be a variety of things. Poipole could use the Z-Move Acid Downpour, which would rain down toxic sludge on the field, but I do like the idea of it summoning a Naganadel to provide support with its large stinger.
Home Stage:
I do think we’ll be getting an Alola Stage in Smash for Switch, it only makes sense. But after reading enough on Poipole, that Megalo Tower stage where you fight Ultra Necrozma would make a really cool stage. Probably have platforms light up with the Ultra Necrozma god chicken guy just creating things out of light. It’ll rain down light projectiles and twist the arena to its will. I don’t know man, that sounds like a Smash stage to me.
Reasons For!
-Poipole is essentially representing the newest Pokemon game, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Other Pokemon, like Decidueye and Mimikyu, also have to represent and encompass the entire Generation 7, which isn’t that new any more to begin with. -Poipole is probably the only viable Ultra Beast to get into Smash too. None of the other designs have much “personality” I guess. They’re all just really creepy eldritch abominations, and none of them really stand out as a face for them...except Poipole, who is cute and personable. -Having another Not Fully Evolved Pokemon with a Pixie like design could be really good for diversifying the Pokemon roster, which has probably too many humanlike and final evolved Pokemon characters. Poipole would be a break from the Greninjas and the Lucarios. -oh and Ash actually caught one of these adorable motherfuckers.
Reasons Against!
-Sakurai has drawn from upcoming Pokemon generations when he makes these games, and even though we haven’t seen ANYTHING from Generation 8, Sakurai could still toss a Pokemon from that in. Lucario and Greninja were both developed into fighters alongside their games of origin. -If Sakurai draws from a Generation 7 Pokemon, however, it’ll probably be because of Popularity, and Poipole is still very fresh and new. It’s not going to have the same fanbase that Decidueye or Mimikyu have. What’s more, both of those Pokemon have sterling moveset potential, whereas I sort of pulled Poipole’s from my ass. -There’s also the huuuuuuge possibility that Generation 7 just won’t be represented in Smash with a fighter. There’s currently 6 Pokemon on the roster already and adding to that might seem like just too much (and technically a trainer can only hold 6 on a team before having to place one in the PC) -Inklings might have the “sloppy icky goopy goop” moveset covered.
I feel like this was a controversial pick, but Poipole would be an adorable little poison guy if implemented properly. Here’s hoping Gen 7 gets SOMETHING, anyway. Tune in next time though, as I’m probably going to talk about Balloons maybe.

Cool Smash Possibilities #3: Captain Toad
Tumblr media
Welcome to another edition of this cute Tumblr series I’m writing! While personally, I would love to play as both Funky and Alm, I don’t actually think they’ll even be logically considered for Smash. But for today’s entry, I actually have a little bit of hope for this little fungi. Not only being one of the more prominent WiiU Mario spinoffs, but also being featured in quite a number of Mario games himself, there’s no better time to include Captain Toad into the Smash Brothers roster.
The Origin:
Toad’s been a pretty reoccurring character/species since the start of Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom adventures in 1985. They usually assume a minor role in the series, while also appearing in literally every spinoff game as a playable character. They even appear in Smash, though the use of Peach’s Neutral B special. I believe this makes sense, as Toad joining the Smash roster would be equal to a random Goomba or Koopa Troopa joining. Yoshi’s a special case, as the dino is sort of one of many, but he’s also starred in numerous games and has a much larger presence in both the Mario and Nintendo world. Plus, the Mario franchise sure does have a lot of playable characters as is, so having the Toad character as a special move tied to Princess Peach makes sense. So, you may be ask, what makes Captain Toad so different? Well, here’s some more backstory. During 2008′s Super Mario Galaxy on Nintendo Wii, Mario will sometimes encounter a wandering group of Toads, assisting the plumber thoughout the level. Sometimes they will give him the power stars he seeks, others they just sort of whimsically commented on the galaxies they explored. Regardless, the red Toad of this brigade wore a light on his head, and is essentially the prototype Captain Toad. They appear again in 2010′s Super Mario Galaxy 2. This exact group of Toads appear again in the next big console Mario Game, 2013′s Super Mario 3D World, with a major redesign. Not only do they show up during some stages, but you take control of the leader (now officially dubbed “Captain Toad”) of this brigade during special challenge levels. These levels have you control the Captain though diorama like obstacle courses, using the gamepad to control the camera. Captain Toad cannot jump, so he can only run to avoid obstacles in order to collect the 5 Green Stars and complete the challenge. These levels were ridiculously popular on the Miiverse Social Media community, and thus, the developers ended up using these as base for their next game. Thus, comes 2014′s Captain Toad Treasure Tracker! Captain Toad’s very own game that feature a comfy collection of diorama levels to complete, including even boss levels. Captain Toad is of course joined by Captain Toadette and the rest of the Toad Brigade, on their quest to find lots of treasure. It was announced like a month ago that it’s getting an updated port on Nintendo Switch, including levels featured in 2017′s Super Mario Odyssey... Which Captain Toad was also featured in! Hidden in the many Kingdoms, Captain Toad will give Mario a single Power Moon when found and talked to. Mario can also find Captain Toadette residing in Peach’s Castle after the game is completed, and gives Mario a Power Moon for every achievement he completes.
Smash Statistics:
So okay, before I start this, I want Toadette as an alternate skin for Captain Toad. I don’t think this should be a problem, as Corrin, Robin, and the Wii Fit Trainer have both sexes as Alternate Costumes. Now that that’s out of the way, Captain Toad should be similar to Little Mac in ways. He doesn’t have the jumping power that other Mario series characters have, but he should be very fast on the ground. That doesn’t mean he CAN’T jump, because that would cripple him severely in a game like this, but he has a hard time lifting off the ground. Captain Toad’s basic attacks would mostly involve him using his head and his feet, as they both have prominent size. Captain Toad’s Neutral Special would be a variation of Peach’s Neutral B, though while Peach’s spores shoot in front of her, Toad’s would cover his entire body. I guess it’d be similar to Corrin’s stupid Dragon counter, but not nearly as much knockback. I’d make his Forward Special a powerful Back Pack Swing. Not only would Toad use this to propel horizontally in the air, but also as a hard hitting swing attack with pretty decent range. I’m bringing back the Propeller Block from Mario 3D Land to be his Up Special, giving him a predictable recovery that causes slice damage from the propellers. Finally, his Down Special would be Turnip Pluck. While Peach’s turnips have different faces and gimmicks, Captain Toad would pull out a predictable turnip. He’d do it much faster than Peach, just to toss in a cute little nod to Super Mario Bros. 2. When Captain Toad gets the Smash Ball, he pulls from the ground his mighty Super Pickax! This cute little item is actually based off of the Hammer in Donkey Kong, and therefor will give Captain Toad all the benefits of said item, as well as invulnerability. The Pickax disappears after a while, so score your KOs!
Home Stage:
I feel like fighting on top of one of those Diorama stages would be really cute. I don’t really know which one, though. Maybe something with cute shy guys in the background, as well as the rest of the Toad Brigade hidden somewhere. Maybe the stage will change as it’s rotated around, meaning you have to adapt to new hazards you might’ve seen in the background, like those said Shy Guys. That, or toss Captain Toad’s stage into New Donk City or an Odyssey themed stage. IDK, I’ve never designed a video game before.
Reasons For!
-Captain Toad perfectly aligns within that timeframe between Smash 4 and the new Smash, and Sakurai heavily drew from that timeframe for the last game. -I feel like Captain Toad just appeals to everyone. Old School fans would love to see Toad in this game, newer fans get the major Captain Toad fanservice. Guys would find his hard hitting fast playstyle hilarious, gals would think he’s hella adorable. I can imagine all the memes just sprouting up like shrooms including this little guy. -I don’t think Captain Toad has much competition from other Mario franchise characters. Like, Pauline MAYBE, but Waluigi and Daisy haven’t appeared in as many mainline Mario games as Captain Toad has. Plus, Toad has been in the spinoffs since Super Mario Kart, I think he deserves a little more priority than those two.
Reasons Against!
-Sakurai’s usually super adamant on his choices in Smash. Toad has been Peach’s Neutral Special since Melee, and it’s unclear if Captain Toad will be enough to change his mind. -Toads have always walked that line between an Actual Character and Generic Series of Characters. I think Captain Toad is an Actual Character, but y’never know what the developers think. -Mario as a franchise has six characters and a clone already, while also semi encompassing the Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Wario franchises. The Mario franchise has a lot of characters in Smash as is. Maybe after Rosalina and Bowser Jr., Sakurai would want to simmer down on those Mushroom Emblemed guys?
Overall, I think Captain Toad has potential. He could be really fun, if added! It just depends if Sakurai is willing to give the fungi the 12 Part Video Game franchise + Anime Adaptation he deserves. Anyway, my next Cool Smash Possibilities will be out on Sunday, but I’m going to provide an interesting twist: you guys can vote for the next Cool Smash Possibility. If you guys have any characters you’re dying to see, feel free to DM me, and the most popular one will be done on Sunday! I’m familiar with most Nintendo franchises, the 3rd Party characters I might have to do a bit of research but I mean y’know, that’s it. See ya Sunday!

Cool Smash Possibilities #2: Alm
Tumblr media
Adding to the ever looming presence of the Fire Emblem franchise, Alm is the co-protagonist from the second ever Fire Emblem game released on the Famicom. He also happens to star in it’s remake, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Some may call him Another Hero King, others the Hero of Prophecy. But does he have what it takes to face the various foes in Smash?
The Origin
Fire Emblem Gaiden, released for the Famicom in 1992, places you in the comfortable setting of Ram Village, as you guide Alm towards his destiny. Intangled in the fate of the country of Valentia, Alm joins a resistance known as “The Deliverance” on their way to reclaim the Zophian Castle, and he continues into the warhungry country of Rigel as well. His childhood friend, Celica, partakes on a separate adventure to assist the god who’s absence has plagued the country. The two end up meeting and assisting each other, forming different armies in the process.
While Gaiden is a primitive NES game, I will be devising Alm’s moveset from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, a full remake of the game released on the 3DS in 2016. Not only has the turn based combat been enhanced, but Alm gets quite a number of essential skills from the title.
Smash Statistics
There’s no way of getting around this one, Alm’s extremely similar to previous Fire Emblem protagonists in Smash already. While he doesn’t exactly have Marth’s finesse or Ike’s hardy strength, Alm’s combat style would closely resemble that of Roy. He’d have his sword, the Regal Blade, close to his body when he strikes opponents, and like Link, he’d be wielding his weapon in his left hand. His run speed would have to be directly in between Marth’s and Ike’s, giving him sort of a scrappy fighter. When it comes to Alm’s specials, a few come to mind. His Neutral Special could involve using the bow he gets when he promotes. The arrows he shoots could potentially reach longer areas that Link’s and Toon Link’s, referencing Gaiden’s absurdly lengthy attack range. His Side B would be his unique skill, Double Lion. The first slice of his sword would trap opponents, forcing them to take the second strike, which casts much more knockback. It’d be mostly comparable to a stronger Dancing Blade, but like Echoes, would cost Alm 2% each use. His Up Special would involve the Fighter to leap in the air, similar to his finishing attack in Gaiden. He’d travel downwards, plumeting his sword in the unlucky opponent. This move would be most comparable to King Dedede’s Jump technique, but with much more horizontal distance. Alm’s Final Smash involves his ultimate skill in Echoes - the Sendscale. Equipping the Echoes variant of the Falchion, Alm holds the divine weapon out in front of him, the crest on his hand glowing. The Falchion’s blue light radiants outwards, as Alm leaps forward and lets out a powerful flashing strike. The attack has high range and high knockback, giving Alm a powerful tool for dealing with multiple foes at once.
Home Stage
I have a few ideas for possible Echoes stages, but for now I’ll focus on Castle Rigel, the grand stage where Alm fights the Emperor Rudolf. The stage is a fairly simple walk off, with a ground platform as well as platforms leading upwards. Throughout the battle, you’ll work your way up to the high platform, getting to the top of Castle Rigel. From there, you can see a huge battle unfold, the Deliverance Soldiers fighting in the courtyard. When you’re on the top of Castle Rigel, Emperor Rudolf will dash at the fighters on his trusty steed, swinging his mighty lance. Alm can possibly get commentary from some of the Deliverance members, similar to Fox and Falco on the Star Fox stages. Tobin and Gray will comment most of the time, expressing their disdain. If Marth or Lucina are also present on the battlefield, the villager boys will get EXTRA talky.
Reasons For!
-Alm’s a major protagonist of the latest released Fire Emblem game, and it’s been a pattern that the latest protagonists usually get into Smash as fighters. -When it comes to Sword Wielding Fire Emblem protagonists, Alm’s left handed style might help him carve a niche. -Celica, Alm’s co-protagonist, is really similar to Robin in niche. Like, I’m not saying two Spellswords are a bad thing, but Celica and Robin are REALLY similar, whereas Alm’s fighting style fits nicely between Marth and Ike AND has potential to be different.. -I really fucking love this character please Sakurai just give this good boy the ability to fight in smash please please please
Reasons Against!
-Chrom. Sakurai didn’t add him into Smash because he was too similar to Ike, If Sakurai feels like Alm’s too similar to Marth, he doesn’t stand a chance. -There are a lot of god damn Fire Emblem characters in Smash currently. Even Sakurai admits that he overdid it in Smash 4. I currently use this as my basis as to why Fire Emblem probably won’t have another rep in general. -and even if it did get another rep, Alm’s a generic swordsman in a sea of generic swordsmen. Roy’s a perfect migrade between Marth and Ike in the game already. Echoes is also sandwiched in between Fire Emblem Heroes and the upcoming FE Switch, either or have characters that are much more unique than Alm.
So even if I really do think Alm is a great character, I really doubt he’ll get into Smash. I do think he’s solid Assist Trophy potential though! Prove me wrong, Sakurai!!!!
Next Thursday we’re going to hop briskly walk back into the Mushroom Kingdom to look at a budding star in his own right.

Cool Smash Possibilities #1: Funky Kong
Tumblr media
Hey guys, I’m using this Tumblr Account again! Woah! Wow! Yeah no idea if this’ll stick but I feel like it’s a great way to get all those things in my head out. And lately, my head’s been buzzing about the new Smash Brothers game. I’m in full on Speculation Mode and I just want to get it all out. So I’m going to do a few analysises on some Nintendo and maybe some non-Nintendo characters that I’d like to see in Smash, and figure out why or why not they’d be likely.
so hey let’s start out with my number 1 most wanted character, a model swap of Donkey Kong with sunglasses!
The Origin: Funky Kong made his debut alongside Diddy Kong, King K. Rool, and the newest version of the big ape himself in 1994′s Donkey Kong Country, more or less passing off Donkey Kong’s model as another character. It was the 90s, and silicon valley graphics aren’t cheap, after all! Funky’s main role in the DKC Trilogy was more or less giving the Kongs a loan of his Barrel Biplane in order to travel to levels they’ve already completed. In Donkey Kong Country 3, Funky got his trademark outfit, and had an expanded role in giving Dixie and Kiddy new boats, allowing them to explore more of the Northern Kremisphere (Not!Canada). Funky returned in full army getup in Donkey Kong 64 as the weapons dealer, giving DK and the Kongs their trademark Fruit Firearms, like the Coconut Gun and the Peanut Popguns. Though a funny thing happened after Rare was bought out by Microsoft, and Nintendo retained most of the rights to the Donkey Kong characters. Funky did start to get playable appearances, starting in DK King of Swing in 2005. He’s appeared in Donkey Konga 3, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, and even in Mario Spinoffs such as Mario Kart Wii and Mario Super Sluggers! This brief period solidified Funky as a major player in the Donkey Kong franchise, but he has only recently returned back to the limelight in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, as he’s not only a shopkeeper in the WiiU release, but playable in the Switch version!
Smash Statistics: So, what would Funky play like in Smash? Well, there’s no getting around his bulky frame. Ideally, he’d be a strong fighter with a massive reach, similar to Donkey Kong himself. I’d make his Smash attacks similar to Dance moves, more or less to show off his style and give him a laid back approach. He’d probably be heavier and slower than Donkey Kong, as he’d be carrying his Surfboard on his back. His specials would actually rely on the surfboard. Maybe give him a Down B that replicates Cranky’s pogo stick cane in Tropical Freeze, while his Up B involves him spinning it like a helicopter like Dixie’s helicopter hair. Maybe give him the Coconut Gun from DK 64 for his side special, giving him a slower long ranged special. His Final Smash, of course, has to be the Barrel Biplane. It’d come out, divebomb opponents for a bit, before exploding, as Funky lands unscathed, probably striking a pose.
Home Stage: I feel like a Tropical Freeze Stage is inevitable for the newest Smash, and I believe the Lost Mangroves from Tropical Freeze’s first world is inevitable. The island is a sight to behold, with so much abandoned machinery and wildlife growing out of it. I think it’d be very fitting for Funky’s character. If the stage has cameos from Tropical Freeze enemies like Tuck, I’ll be a happy camper. Not to mention a buttload of David Wise music and music covers!
Reasons For! -I think the Donkey Kong franchise is really lacking in a new character. It’s certainly stood on its own legs since Returns, and although THAT game really only had two playable characters, Tropical Freeze expanded the playable cast. -Nintendo of Japan really seems to like Funky! I think Rare never had such lofty ambitions for him, keeping him around as an NPC, but it’s very rare for Non-Mario franchise characters to get into Mario Kart, much less characters who were considered fairly minor. -Tropical Freeze is getting a second push on Switch, and they’ve been really pushing Funky Kong in the marketing. Sakurai might want to choose a Donkey Kong character integral to the Switch.
Reasons Against! -Funky Kong generally looks a bit too similar to Donkey Kong. Sakurai might feel the two are similar, like what happened with Ike and Chrom during Smash 4′s development. -Retro Studios doesn’t exactly get to connect to Nintendo much, so if Sakurai wasn’t aware of Tropical Freeze’s New Funky Mode when he decided the roster months ago, Funky might be passed over. -Funky’s costars in Tropical Freeze, Dixie and Cranky, are generally considered more important than him. Dixie headlined her own game, and has a sizeable fanbase that may have voted for her on the Smash Ballot, while Cranky is one of the only Kongs that returned in Donkey Kong Country Returns, and lorewise sort of is generally more important.
Hooooo boy! Now that’s one Funky fella. I’m going to try and get one of these out every day off, so next Sunday, prepare for a trip to Valentia, as we cover the leader of the Deliverance.
