elsa shudders at the thought , at the fact that the only thing keeping the storm within her at bay is the biggest threat to her life. the hum of magic within her has quieted some since the nautiloid , it's a stability she's not necessarily eager to return to life without , even if it makes her more of a monster than before.

❛ i don't want to become an illithid , gale. but ... there's no denying what i've felt. it ... seems to temper my ice , even just slightly. for the first time in my life , i don't feel like i'm about to explode. ❜

knees are drawn to her chest & elsa rests her cheek against them , icy eyes never leaving gale. more than ever , she wants his help , his advice , his presence . she needs him , perhaps more than she'd ever been willing to admit to. a dry laugh leaves her when she hears him say they're in the same boat , glacier gaze watching his fingers toy with the edges of bandages she didn't remember seeing before.

❛ ... i can tell. your presence ... is different than before. your magic feels different. i won't pry for details , but ... i do worry for you , gale. i worry what's become of you , of both of us , since we last spoke. ❜

her fingers touch his shoulder and gale flinches minutely. this small jump of his muscles like he wasn't expecting it. he doesn't pull back, though, and if anything takes the opportunity as an invitation to inch closer. shoulder touching shoulder, his fingers move to grab her gloved ones gently, and he trades his own tight, grimace of equal bitterness.

funny, how they both wish for something. how they both desperately want to go back to something they cannot have. how he longs for the feeling of being Mystra's chosen again, that need to be seen and admired by his Goddess eats away at him faster than the rot spreading in his veins.

"i'd certainly be careful, with your deal." he says, carefully. "as you said, the fey are fickle creatures, and of course right now, you're fine. but it's all fun and games until you suddenly cannot speak your own name." it's still careful, less biting and much more concern bleeding into his voice. his brows knot together, not with ire or disappointment, but concern, worry. there's a spark of fear in those brown eyes.

"it won't." he says, looking away as so she doesn't see it. how deeply afraid for her he is. he knows she already knows. "i won't let it. i promise, i'll figure out a way to get these things out. lest we all go down a path we don't want." his hands come together, eyes downcast as he toys with the fraying edges of his bandages. "we're in much the same boat, you and i."

he sits near her , close enough for her to reach out , gloved fingers brushing against his shoulder. this , this is the gale she expected to see again , this is the gale she would call her brother. her smile is burdened , bitter at best & slightly sad. they've been doomed to a horrible , painful fate , & it tugs at elsa's chest to think about it.

all the places she can go , & she wants nothing more than to run back to her father's arms. an impossible , childish dream , one she doesn't wish to indulge , & elsa gives a slight shake of her head.

❛ i wouldn't consider my attempt smart. the fey are tricksters by nature , & i got lucky. sometimes i wonder if i'm getting more out of this than i bargained for. ❜

gloved fingers trace the intricate pattern embroidered into her gloves , sighing softly. perhaps this wasn't the time to divulge information of her pact , she didn't dare say anything that might bring out that biting cruelty of his once more. the idea of him looking at her like that again is something she doesn't wish to relive , & icy gaze focuses on the gap between the opening of her tent.

her voice trails off , words stuck in her throat , but she knows gale can see it were he to meet her gaze : she's terrified.

he cannot quite look her in the eyes. to do so would be too raw, but perhaps he should. show the true apology that he knows is written across his face. instead, he keeps his eyes down, head tilted slightly to fully avoid her gaze but still see her, but still study her body language. hesitantly, he steps forward, closer, the tent flap dropping, covering the space from what little light shown in the torch light.

that — that makes it easier. where he can just barely see the outline of her. he has always viewed elsa as ethereal, almost otherworldly, dare he even say divinity in human form. it is a deep stated admiration for her power, her posture. one he knows only a little about personally.

"you are hardly a fool. at least your efforts were not in vain. certainly a far smarter attempt at your goals than i myself am." he says, carefully, knowing that despite her shunted situation with her family, her sister is still alive. gale can hardly say the same for himself. alone, with just his tressym and his mother. ( can he count keyleth, again? or elsa? he doesn't know. he has yet to indulge them in the full truth of his current state. )

he sits down, not quite beside her, but tentatively close enough to show that he is making an effort. gale isn't site what to say to that, letting the silence linger on between them that is, for the first time since their reunion, not as charged.

"tell me, how do you think we are going to get out of this?" he asks, for once allowing that bone-deep exhaustion sink into him, to show in the creases of his eyes and brows.
