Immunity & minerals to boost our immune system
Immunity is a natural system in your body to prevent the assault of pathogens. Substances like viruses and bacteria are commonly known as pathogens. Every day we are in contact with these pathogens and some of them can be threatening. Our immune system can fail to fight them off.
Antigens are attached to the surface of these pathogens often stimulate an immune response.
Immune response is our body’s defence system to fight antigens and protect us. There are three types of immunity like passive immunity, innate immunity, and active or acquired immunity.
Passive Immunity: Refers to the capacity to resist pathogens by borrowing antibodies. For example, antibodies are transferred to a baby through breast milk from the mother. Another good example is immunoglobulin transfused from one person to another.
Innate Immunity: We are born with this immunity. These include body hair, skin, gastric acid, saliva. These often stand to respond quickly to defend against pathogens. This immune system doesn’t know the type of antigen.
Active/acquired Immunity: This type of immunity is developed from our immunological memory. When our body is exposed to a specific antigen, attached to a pathogen, the immune system develops antibodies for that specific antigen. If the same antigen attacks again, the body knows that specific antigen and has antibodies to fight off.
Essential Minerals to boost immune health:
Iron:
It is an important mineral required in our body to grow and develop. Hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells is produced by iron. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from our lungs to all the parts of the body. Our body also needs iron to make some hormones.
Different types of Iron:
Ferrous Ascorbate
Ferrous Asparto Glycinate
Ferric Ammonium Citrate
Iron Polymaltose Complex
Ferric Pyrophosphate
Ferrous Bisglycinate
Zinc:
Zinc is an important nutrient that makes us healthy. It is found in cells in our body. Zinc is helpful in making our immune system stronger.
Different types of Zinc:
Zinc Citrate
Zinc Acetate
Zinc Aspartate
Zinc Bisglycinate
Magnesium:
Magnesium is required for multiple functioning in our body, including regular muscle and nerve function, blood sugar and blood pressure levels and even making protein, DNA, and bone density. Magnesium deficiency can indirectly or directly affect our immune health.
Different types of Magnesium:
Magnesium Acetate
Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium Aspartate
Magnesium Bisglycinate
These are the minerals that are used in boosting immune system. However, there are more minerals we will discuss in details in later blog posts.
Conclusion:
In this article we have seen the importance of immune system in our body and several minerals that are directly or indirectly involved in making this system healthy. These minerals can be found in our diet however sometimes we require them as supplements if the food doesn’t contain enough amount of that mineral.

Types of Calcium
Our human body requires multiple types of minerals aka essential minerals. Essential minerals are often divided up into major minerals (popularly called macro minerals) and trace minerals (called micro minerals).
Trace minerals are required in smaller amounts than major minerals. However, both of these two groups of minerals are equally important.
A balanced diet mostly provides all of the essential minerals to our body. One such mineral is Calcium.
Calcium is an important mineral found in our body. This mineral is found in many foods. Our body needs calcium to maintain strong bones and to carry out vital functions. All the calcium is stored in our bones and teeth. Calcium supports the structure & hardness.
The body also requires calcium for muscle movement and nerves to carry messages between our brain and each body part.
Types of Calcium:
1.      Calcium Citrate
Calcium Citrate is the calcium salt of citric acid. It is usually used as a food addictive, preservative, even for flavor.
It is used in medicines for treating or preventing low blood calcium levels in those who do not get enough amount of calcium from diets. Low levels of Calcium Citrate can cause osteoporosis, rickets, hypoparathyroidism, and latent tetany.
2.      Calcium Citrate Malate
Calcium Citrate Malate is a calcium supplement and is water-soluble. This is a calcium salt of citric acid (Citric acid is an organic compound) and malic acid with variable composition.
When Calcium Citrate Malate is dissolved, it releases calcium ions and a calcium citrate complex. Calcium ions are directly absorbed into intestinal cells. The citrate complex enters the body through the para-cellular absorption.
Calcium Citrate Malate is a little different from Calcium Malate and other calcium salts. The European Food Safety Authority has concluded that calcium citrate malate is slightly more bioavailable that other forms of supplements containing calcium.
3.      Calcium Acetate
Calcium Acetate is a chemical compound that is a calcium salt of acetic acid (Acetic acid is the second simplest carboxylic acid).
Calcium Acetate has the formula Ca(C2H3O2)2. The systematic name of Calcium Acetate is Calcium ethanoate and its older name is acetate of lime.
Calcium Acetate is prepared by soaking calcium carbonate or hydrated lime in vinegar.
4.      Calcium Aspartate
The molecular formula of Calcium Aspartate is C8H12CaN2O8
The API form of Calcium Aspartate is white crystalline powder. Calcium Aspartate has high absorption rate in comparison to other calcium. You can get Calcium Aspartate as API from West Bengal Chemical Industries Ltd.
5.      Calcium Asparto Glycinate
Calcium Asparto Glycinate is an important calcium and is used in medicines to support the functioning of our body tissues. It is also used in supplements to support our nerves, muscles, and all connective tissues.
6.      Calcium Propionate
It is an organic salt used as a food additive. Calcium propionate helps preserve foods, generally baked goods, by interfering with the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, such as bacteria, molds, and fungi.

Iron Isomaltoside in Treating Anaemia
Iron deficiency anemia commonly known as IDA is a common problem related with multiple chronic disorders also includes chronic kidney disease (CKD). The main cause of anemia in patients with CKD are erythropoietin and iron deficiencies and also a decreased responsiveness to the actions of erythropoietin.
Some of the reasons for which people suffer with anemia are bad quality of life, long time suffering from disease. According to WHO, Anaemia results from a lack of red blood cells or dysfunctional red blood cells in the body. Especially women from the third world countries suffer the most due to blood loss during menstruation.
Treatment is required for anemia patients. In general iron supplement is given to the patients. Treatment of oral iron is adequate for some patients but there are side effects like intolerance, inflammation, etc.
The International guidelines suggest IV iron preparations as the preferred option in the correction of Iron Deficiency Anemia in several of these circumstances especially when there is a high iron demand, since it is more effective, tolerated by patients, and improves the quality of life to a greater extent than oral iron supplements.
(Iron Infusions first came about in the early twentieth century)
Iron Isomaltoside was introduced in Europe in 2010. It consists of iron and a carbohydrate moiety in which the iron is tightly bound in a matrix structure.
This enables a controlled and slow release of iron to iron-binding proteins that avoids potential toxicity from release of labile iron.
The strongly bound iron within the Iron Isomaltoside formulation allows flexible dosing. You can use high dosing (single doses of 1–2 g) over a short time period without any harm. Compared to compounds in which iron is more loosely bound in the complex, the iron Isomaltoside complex potentially leads to generation of less oxidative stress and less immunological toxicity.
In the European Union, iron Isomaltoside is administered with a maximum single dosage of 20 mg/kg actual body weight.
The dose flexibility and possibility of providing full iron correction over a short time period in one visit make iron Isomaltoside highly convenient for both the patients and health-care professionals.
Several clinical trials, mainly short term, have been reported for Iron Isomaltoside where it has been shown to be well tolerated and to improve markers of IDA in patients receiving dialysis.
WBCIL is a leading manufacturer of iron Isomaltoside and also exports to countries like Egypt, UAE, US, etc. It is available in deep brown coloured free flowing powder. Packing size of iron Isomaltoside is 20 kg in sterile HDPE drum. The shelf life of Iron Isomaltoside is 36 months.

Iron Isomaltoside
•       Chronic Kidney Disease - functional iron deficiency should be corrected before ESA therapy, management of anaemia
•       Antenatal and postpartum – haemorrhage, delayed wound healing, reduced quality and quantity of lactation
•       Gastroenterology - Inflammatory (Crohn’s & colitis), acute/chronic blood loss
•       Pre- and post-operative – rapid increase in Hb levels & alternate to blood transfusion
•       Gynecology Oncology – improved response to erythropoietic proteins
•       Chronic Heart Failure – reduced left ventricle ejection fraction, improved functional capacity, low side effect
•       ITU, care of the elderly, palliative care – rapid increase in Hb levels & alternate to blood transfusion
In General:
Requirement of rapid iron     replacement
Ongoing occult blood loss
May delay investigative     procedures
Interactions with many common     oral drugs
May be inadequate during ESA therapy
Accelerated erythropoiesis can increase demand for iron beyond the amount supplied orally
Gastrointestinal adverse events
Can affect over 50% of patients
Can adversely affect     nutritional intake
Improved if iron tablets are     taken with food, but this decreases absorption
Compliance
Pill burden: usually 2 or 3     tablets per day
Affected by gastrointestinal     intolerance
Oxidative stress
High oral iron doses can     saturate the iron transport system if the iron is rapidly released,     resulting in oxidative stress
 When parental iron
•      Indicated for treatment of iron deficiency when oral iron preparations are ineffective or cannot be used
•      Comparative clinical trials show a faster and more prolonged response with IV iron than with oral iron
•      IV iron is more effective, better tolerated and improves quality of life to a greater extent than oral iron
•      Concerns regarding allergic reactions
 Why Iron Isomaltoside?
•       very low immunogenic potential and a very low content of labile and free iron and therefore less oxidative stress and potentially better long-term safety
•       enables to be administered as a rapid high dose infusion in doses exceeding 1000 mg without the application of a test dose
•       offers considerable dose flexibility, including the possibility of providing full iron repletion in a single infusion (one-dose iron repletion)
•       consists of iron and a carbohydrate moiety where the iron is tightly bound in a matrix structure
•       enables a controlled slow release of bioavailable iron to the iron-binding proteins, with potentially a reduced risk of free iron toxicity
Pharmacodynamic properties
•       Iron Isomaltoside solution for injection is a colloid with strongly bound iron in spheroidal iron-carbohydrate particles
•       The formulation contains iron in a complex that enables a controlled and slow release of bioavailable iron to iron-binding proteins with little risk of free iron
•       Each particle consists of a matrix of iron(III) atoms and isomaltoside pentamers – the chelation of iron(III) with carbohydrate confers to the particles a structure resembling ferritin that is suggested to protect against the toxicity of unbound inorganic iron(III)
•       The iron is available in a non-ionic water-soluble form in an aqueous solution with pH between 5.0 and 7.0
•       Evidence of a therapeutic response can be seen within a few days of administration as an increase in the reticulocyte count. Due to the slow release of bioavailable iron serum ferritin peaks within days after an intravenous dose and slowly returns to baseline after weeks
 Pharmacodynamic properties (cont.)
•       Following IV administration, Iron Isomaltoside 1000 is rapidly taken up by the cells in the reticuloendothelial system (RES), particularly in the liver and spleen, from where iron is slowly released
•       The plasma half-life is 5 hr for unbound circulating iron and 20 hr for total iron (bound and circulating)
•       Circulating iron is removed from the plasma by cells of the reticuloendothelial system which split the complex into its components of iron and isomaltoside 1000
•       The iron is immediately bound to the available protein moieties to form haemosiderin or ferritin, the physiological storage forms of iron, or to a lesser extent, to the transport molecule transferrin
•       Due to the size of the carbohydrate–iron complex, intact Iron Isomaltoside 1000 is not eliminated via the kidneys
•       Small quantities of iron are eliminated in urine and faeces
•       The carbohydrate component, isomaltoside 1000, is either metabolized or excreted
Why Ideal IV..?
•       Capable of delivering a wide dosing range to allow a single visit iron correction dose
•       Test dose not necessary
•       Controlled slow release of bioavailable iron to the iron-binding proteins, with potentially a reduced risk of free iron toxicity
•       A fast infusion, and minimal potential side effects including low catalytic/labile iron release and negligible risk of anaphylaxis
•       They should be convenient for the patient and the health care professional
•       Cost effective for the health care system
•       Each 1 ml contains 100 mg iron
Snapshot
•       Tightly bind iron – more doses in one shot
•       Each 1 ml contains 100 mg iron
•       Test dose not necessary
•       One dose Iron Repletion
•       No ceiling in dose (upto 2000 mg can be given in 1 shot and 3000 mg in cumulative dose)
•       Can be administered as a single infusion in 30-60 minutes for doses upto 20mg iron/kg body weight
•       Negligible Hypophosphatemia Episode
•       An important component of the strategy as an alternative to blood transfusion

Common Uses of Ferric Orthophosphate
Tumblr media
Ferric Orthophosphate is usually known as Iron Phosphate (In science, a phosphate is an anion, salt, useful gathering or ester got from a phosphoric corrosive. It most regularly implies orthophosphate, a subordinate of Orthophosphoric corrosive H. 3PO. 4.).
Ferric Orthophosphate is a vital mineral used in different industries like food, pharma, farming, etc. It is added to nutritional supplements for treating anaemia commonly known as iron deficiency.
Ferric Orthophosphate is also used in sports industry as performance enhancers (It helps boosting the stamina of a sportsman/athlete)
Ferric Orthophosphate in treating Anaemia
Anaemia is very common among the women population due to their menstruation cycle. So they have to get iron supplement from external sources.
Iron is an important mineral in human body. It is one of the most important minerals in a human body. Iron in the form of haemoglobin helps red blood cells in carrying oxygen from your lungs to the cells and remove carbon dioxide from human body.
Someone with deficiency of iron most probably can also suffer from anaemia. Patients who are suffering from anaemia often feel fatigue because not enough amount of oxygen is supplied to their cells.
People who are suffering from anaemia if do not get enough iron in their diet must need to consume iron from supplements to get the mineral to their body. Ferric Orthophosphate is a very crucial iron supplement that is consumed to treat iron-deficiency anaemia.
It is often seen that those who are vegetarians do not get enough iron because iron is mostly available in non-vegetarian food items.
Ferric Orthophosphate & Performance
To enhance the blood flow of a human body, Ferric Orthophosphate is usually added to supplements. These sport enhancers improve the oxygen movement during heavy exercise like weight lifting, running, etc.
It is also used in treating certain types of memory loss and learning issues in children suffering from low iron levels. There is no solid proof that Ferric Orthophosphate is useful in treating problems that are related to non-iron like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
Other Uses of Ferric Orthophosphate
Ferric Orthophosphate is a vital substance in farming because it is used to kill slugs and snails that are responsible for destroying crops.
It has already been approved to use on organic crops because it is not harmful to pets, wildlife, and humans.
In 2005, US Department of Agriculture added Ferric Orthophosphate to the National list of approved substances and to be used in the organic farming.

Study of Ferrous Asparto Glycinate
Tumblr media
Iron Deficiency Anaemia in short known as IDA is a very common nutritional disorders worldwide. It is recorded that it is almost one-half of anaemia cases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Iron Deficiency Anaemia with haemoglobin levels <11 g/dl, is one of the main causes of disability (UNU/UNICEF/WHO 2001).
There was a study in which it was noted how safe oral Ferrous Asparto Glycinate and Ferrous Ascorbate among pregnant women who are suffering with iron deficiency anaemia (IDA).  In the study, researchers gathered 73 pregnant women at 12 to 26 weeks’ gestation. The group of women were divided into two arms. Women in one group was given Ferrous Ascorbate whereas another group was treated with Ferrous Asparto Glycinate for a period of 28 days.
On day 14 and 28, the mean rise in haemoglobin & Ferritin levels was evaluated. The study found that a significant higher levels of Ferritin and haemoglobin were found in the group who were treated with Ferrous Asparto Glycinate as compared to those treated with Ferrous Ascorbate. So it was concluded that Ferrous Asparto Glycinate is an effective iron amino acid chelate in managing IDA in pregnant women as compared with Ferrous Ascorbate. In spite of these findings, we need a large scale clinical trials are required to confirm the findings.

Calcium Propionate In Food Industries
Calcium Propionate is an organic salt (naturally occurring) which is formed by a reaction between Propionic Acid and Calcium Hydroxide.
It is a generally used as a food addictive – Popularly known as E282 for preserving multiple food products. The list of those food products given below:
Dairy Products: powdered milk, cheese     products, yogurt, whey, and many more.
Beverages: fruit drinks, soft     drinks, etc.
Baked goods: pastries, breads,     muffins, etc.
Alcoholic drinks: malt beverages, beers,     cider, wine, etc.
Processed meats: hot dogs, lunch meats,     ham, etc.
Calcium Propionate is used to extend the shelf life of many goods by stopping/slowing-down the growth and reproduction of molds and many other microorganisms that destroy the food products.
Mold and bacteria are a big concern for the baking industry mainly because baking provides conditions that are ideal for the growth of mold and bacteria.
Calcium propionate has been approved for use by World Health Organization (WHO), Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
How safe is it to consume?
Calcium Propionate was studied extensively by the Food & Drug Administration before it was considered safe to be used in the food industry.
There was a study on animals that showed that feeding rats (1-3 grams) of Calcium Propionate daily over 4 to 5 weeks had no impact on their growth.
There was a one-year study on rats which proved that taking a diet comprising 4% Calcium Propionate, a higher percentage than human would consume daily had no toxic effects.
Most of the studies in lab on Calcium Propionate and toxicity have proved that it is not that toxic, except a few when used exceptionally higher amounts.
In one instance, researchers injected a very high amount of Calcium Propionate into the yolk sacs of chicken embryos, resulting in abnormalities in the chicken.
Our body cannot store this Calcium Propionate which means it does not build up in our cells. The substance is broken down by our digestive tract and instantly absorbed, metabolized, and at last eliminated.
The Downsides
In general, Calcium Propionate is safe to consume with almost no side effects.
In some situations, it can cause adverse effects like migraines and headaches.
In one study on human, Calcium Propionate intake can lead to the increased production of insulin and glucagon (hormones that stimulates glucose release). This makes our body insulin resistance which is a condition in which our blood cannot use insulin properly, which may lead to Type-2 diabetes.
There was a study on 27 kids. It was found that some experienced restlessness, irritability, poor attention, and irregular sleep after consuming bread daily containing Calcium Propionate.
More studies are required in in this area before it is determined that Calcium Propionate possibly cause bad effects on our body.
It is not supposed to cause any harmful effects on our body so it is safe to be used in our food.
The Conclusion:
Calcium propionate is an organic salt that is not so harmful and is used as a food addictive. It is helpful in preserving foods (baked ones) by interfering growth of microorganisms like fungi, molds, and bacteria. Calcium propionate is safe to use with little to no side-effects for most people. WBCIL is a leading manufacturer of Calcium Propionate in India.
