Simple Guide to Forklift Battery Maintenance
In this post, we'll outline the basic steps to forklift battery maintenance.
We have over 40 years in the material handling industry, and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.
This comprehensive guide will outline what you need to do and when to keep your forklift battery in great shape so that it lasts as long as possible. So, let's get going.
Forklift Battery Maintenance
Proper forklift battery maintenance will not only prolong the life of your battery, thus saving you on replacement costs, but it will also ensure the safety of your workers.
As part of your forklift batter maintenance plan, you should regularly:
Perform equalization charges
Water your battery cells
Wash your battery case
By setting up a regular forklift battery maintenance schedule at set intervals, you can possibly extend the life of your lead acid battery as long as possible; even past the warranty dates.
STEP 1: PERFORM EQUALIZATION CHARGES
As your battery gets used, the cells can lose their capacity to fully hold a charge. For example, one of your cells in your battery may be fully charged while another one is only able to hold half of a charge. If this happens, then your battery becomes less efficient.
Performing an equalization charge can fix this problem. A regular forklift battery recharge cycle lasts about 8 hours. When you do an equalization charge, you continue charging your battery for an extra 3 hours or more at a lower stream of power.
This additional lower charging should make all your cells hold a full charge once again. Because this type of charging can take longer, you will also need to let your battery cool down longer.
It is a good idea to perform equalization charges on the weekend or when production is slower so that you can fit in the extra charging and cooling time necessary.
Frequency: Once a week depending on how often it is used.
STEP 2: WATER YOUR BATTERY CELLS
You need to make sure that you maintain the correct water level inside your battery. Your water level should come to about a half an inch below the battery cap opening.
The electrolyte level needs to be kept between the "high watering level" and the separator protectors marked on your battery.

Make sure that you don't overfill your battery. If you notice moisture on the tops of your batteries, then you will know that it has been overfilled.
youtube
You should only add water to your battery after you have performed a charge cycle. The type of water that you add is very important; it should only be distilled and deionized water. Make sure you check your owner's manual for the specifications.
Frequency: Weekly or bi-monthly depending on how often it is used.
STEP 3: WASH YOUR BATTERY CASE
Keeping your battery case clean will help to prolong its life. If battery acid residue builds up on your battery, you could have a couple of problems.
First, It can make a conductive circuit between the lead posts and its steel case, causing a low-level discharge. This will make your battery burn through its charge cycles and wear out faster.
Second, it can corrode the terminals and damage them. This damage could cause electrical problems with your forklift itself and it can lessen your battery capacity.
To clean your battery case, you should spot clean the tops using an acid-neutralizing de-greaser. Make sure the vent caps are sealed tightly before you begin. If your cleaning solution seeps into the electrolyte (battery acid), then your battery will be ruined.
Frequency: Every month depending on how often it is used
In addition, you should thoroughly wash your entire battery to help control acid and corrosion.
Frequency: Every 3 to 6 months depending on how often it is used.
ADDITIONAL FORKLIFT BATTERY MAINTENANCE TIPS
Forklift batteries contain a dangerous corrosive material called sulfuric acid that can cause severe burns. Because of this, your staff should always wear protective gear when handling and charging them.
Keep flames and metal away from battery tops. For this reason, you should remove any metal jewellery when you are handling a forklift battery.
youtube
Regularly inspect your battery to make sure that there are no defects or malfunctions. If you suspect anything, have your forklift repair service check it out for you.
Provide proper battery care training for all your staff members who will be working around forklift batteries.
For Proper Forklift Battery Maintenance, Contact Wayco.
If you are looking for assistance in caring for your forklift batteries, Wayco offers a comprehensive battery care program.
We will provide monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or yearly inspection of your equipment, batteries, and chargers, making sure they are maintained correctly and on a routine basis.

14 Questions To Ask Before You Take Your Forklift License Training Course
Tumblr media
Here are the top 14 questions to ask before you take a forklift license training course. Get all of the answers that you need about forklift training and the related certification and licensing.
1. WHAT DO I NEED TO ASK WHEN INQUIRING ABOUT FORKLIFT TRAINING?
There is a lot to think about, when looking for the best forklift training. Asking about pricing is a a good idea, but it is more important to know what is included in that price.
Remember to ask how much training you will receive.
A forklift license is not just a piece of plastic; it is knowledge taught by certified teacher and the correct skills that will ensure the safety of a forklift you drive.
It is important that the training applies to your job criteria with proper equipment, course quality, training content, scheduling and pricing. You need more than just online training; you need hands on training to know how to operate a forklift.
The professional forklift instructor needs to know that you have learned and absorbed the required material and can put it to practical use. If you need to retest if you failed at a later date find out if there is an additional cost.
2. WHAT SHOULD BE COVERED IN THE FORKLIFT TRAINING COURSE?
Training and safety school courses coverage should deal with the following topics:
Course Introduction
Government Legislation
Forklift training safety video
Workers, supervisors, and employers responsibilities
Various types of lift truck identification
Pre-operational checks
Maintenance, inspection and records
Load limitations and lift capacity
Fuel Safety for electric and propane forklifts
Safe operating procedures
Forklift training courses are designed by CSA Standard B335-15 – The CSA Safety Standard for Lift Trucks (B335-15) identifies the practical skill, knowledge, and evaluation requirements needed by a lift truck operator.
3. WHY DO I NEED TRAINING TO OPERATE A FORKLIFT?
Even if forklift driving is a very small part of your job, you will need forklift training. Occupational Safety & Health regulations across Canada requires that all workers be trained and certified before driving a forklift.
You not only learn the safe operation of a forklift, but you learn about other safety topics such as hazards, pedestrian traffic, surface conditions, and load stability, loading and unloading in the workplace. This knowledge will help you reduce immediate danger to yourself and any other employees working in the area.
Operator error is the leading cause of workplace equipment accidents, even when an incident does not cause injury, it can still mean costly damage to lift trucks, buildings and productivity.
4. DO I NEED A VALID CAR DRIVERS LICENSE TO BECOME A FORKLIFT DRIVER?
Driving a forklift is very different from driving a car or truck. A car license is not needed if the forklift is operated inside the warehouse or factory.
If you wish to drive the forklift on a public highway, then both you and the vehicle would need to comply to the road traffic laws. However, the forklift operator must be certified to use a forklift in the facility.
5. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET CERTIFIED TO DRIVE A FORKLIFT?
The duration of training will depend on the complexity and comprehensiveness of the type of forklift you are wanting to get certified on. The most common type of a lift truck is a counterbalance forklift which takes 4 to 8 hours of training.
But if you want to drive a rough terrain forklift, the training time tends to be lengthier. The forklift theory part can take anywhere from 2.5 hours and up depending on the group size and learning pace.
The length of time for the practical portion of forklift training will depend on whether the operators have any previous experience and which type of forklift they are training on.
6. DO FORKLIFT CERTIFICATIONS EXPIRE?
One can only Imagine some of the bad habits drivers pick up, therefore every 3 years OHSA regulations require a forklift renewal card.
There are other ways the forklift driver might require certification renewal: if the forklift is involved in an accident, if you are assigned a different type of forklift and require a new forklift certificate for that type of forklift, and even if your facility is modified it changes safety regulations.
Renewing your forklift license reminds forklift operators of the safety procedures which may have slackened over time and ensure that drivers are up to date with the latest advances in technology.
7. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH CERTIFICATION IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
So now the big question, which certification is right for you?  You must first decide what category of lift truck you drive or want to drive. This will determine what type of course you need to attend.
It will also depend on whether it is factory application, outdoor application, or warehouse stacking applications; but at Wayco, we can help you decide which forklift classification training program you should enrol in.
8. HOW DO YOU BEGIN THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS?
To begin the process of certification you will do the following:
1. Enroll in a Forklift Certification Course 2. Attend the Classroom Lectures 3. Pass the Written Examination 4. Perform Actual or Hands-On Forklift Operation 5. Be Evaluated
Once the classroom lecture is completed, and you have passed the written test and completed the hands on practical driving test, you will be evaluated by a competent forklift trainer.
Upon successful completion, you will receive your certification. This forklift certification should be presented when applying for a job or when asked for by your supervisor. Remember that the certification expires every three years. You will need to take refresher training for its renewal.
9. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE?
Is there a difference between a forklift certificate and a forklift license? Most people refer to their certificate as their license, however the correct term is certificate as it is a certificate of training.
A forklift certificate is awarded to the forklift operator who is competent and capable of operating a forklift safely & understands its function. The certificate looks like a license, but legally there is no such thing.
Health and Safety rules require you have adequate training on each type of equipment you use at work. A certificate is only good for a specific type of lift, because not all forklifts are the same.
10. IS MY FORKLIFT CERTIFICATE VALID ANYWHERE?
Your forklift certificate is good for 3 years anywhere in Ontario for the particular forklift type of classification during your stay with the company, you were trained, certified and issued with operator certificate.
The forklift license you have in your possession is still valid, even if you are leave one company and go to work for another company, however the forklifts you are using must be the same (forklift type and classification) as the one indicated on your license.
It is important to remember though that different employers may have their own safety training standards. It may be possible that the new employer has a higher standard than the former employer, or visa versa.
Whatever the situation may be, the new employer should conduct a new session of in-house training, because forklift controls vary depending on the type of truck. That is why it is important that the company familiarize you with the new forklift to help you understand how each control works. You can also read the operator manual to familiarize yourself with the forklift.
11. WHERE CAN I GET ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT FORKLIFT LAWS?
It should come as no surprise that some employers often don’t understand what is required under the standard forklift laws.
Ministry of labour health and safety does a good job specifying many safeguards and procedures in the workplace that operate lifting devices and personnel lifts. For more forklift training information you can go to the following websites:
Ontario Ministry of Labour –Guideline for the Safe Operation and Maintenance of Powered Lift Trucks
Canadian Standard Association Safety Standards
Canadian Centre of Occupational Health & Safety – Forklift Trucks
12. I HAVE LOST MY LICENSE, CAN I GET ANOTHER?
Remember, when you say forklift license, it always refers to certification training or an operator card. To get the certificate replaced, you can request a replacement card from the provider or centre where you got your training.
If you are applying for a job, the easiest way is to ask the person who trained you to send a copy of your certificate to your new employer.
If you are not successful replacing your license, you will have to retake the training and get re-certified. Usually, it is the employer’s obligation to provide you with this training.
13. DO YOU OFFER JOB ASSISTANCE?
Did you know that forklift operators are in demand? Wayco provides a job page on our website to help all certified forklift operator trainees to get a head start on looking for a forklift job opportunities.

What Are the Forklift License Requirements in Ontario?
The forklift license requirements in Ontario include getting the training, knowledge, and experience necessary to be considered "competent" to safely operate a forklift.
Tumblr media
Even though you don't get an actual license to drive a forklift like you do to drive a car, you do have to provide proof that you have received the proper training that meets the OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) guidelines.
If you are looking for a forklift operator training course that meets the standards set out by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association), the Ontario Ministry of Labour  and the OHSA, contact Wayco today.
Forklift License Requirements in Ontario
Forklifts are used in thousands of workplaces all across Ontario. They are found in manufacturing, mining, retail, wholesale, hospitality, hospitals, construction, and other large institutions.
If you currently operate a forklift, or if you would like to get a job operating one, you need to get the proper training that meets the federal and provincial safety standards.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, you must be deemed "competent" in order to operate a lifting device. This means that you need to have the training, knowledge and experience necessary to operate the particular forklift or lifting device that you are working with. In order to become "competent," you should do the following:
CHOOSE A RECOGNIZED FORKLIFT OPERATOR TRAINING COURSE:
You should select a forklift training course that meets the standards laid out by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Ontario Ministry of Labour.
Make sure that the course you choose covers the particular type of equipment that you will be working on.
The course should also give you written confirmation that you have successfully completed it. Usually. this means that you will be given a certificate at the end of the training.
CHOOSE A COURSE THAT OFFERS BOTH IN-CLASS AND PRACTICAL TRAINING:
You want to take a course that will give you theoretical as well as practical training.
IN-CLASS TRAINING
The in-class portion of your training should include topics such as:
Provincial and Federal legislation
CSA Guidelines
Basic Principles of a forklift
Lift truck design and stability
Pre-shift inspection
Parts of a forklift
Safety Rules
Driving Hazards
Classification of lifting devices
Following your in-class training, you should be given a written test to determine whether or not you understand the principles of operating a forklift, including best safety practices.
PRACTICAL TRAINING:
Your practical training should allow you to have plenty of time actually operating the type of equipment that you will be using in your job.
Just like driving a car, operating a forklift will improve with practice. You will want to get that practice under the guidance of a professional trainer - not on your own.
Sometimes training will be done at your place of work, or if this is not possible, there are training facilities that allow you to come there to do your training on their equipment.
At the end of your practical training, you should be given a practical test to make sure that you are fully competent.
KEEP YOUR TRAINING UP-TO-DATE:
It is a good idea to complete a practical retraining course every 18 months. The Canadian Safety Association requires you to renew your certification every 3 years. This means taking a refresher course to keep your skills up-to-date.
GET TRAINING IF YOU SWITCH FORKLIFT TYPES:
Not all forklifts are the same. Because of this you need to enrol in a course that will teach you to properly operate the specific type of lift truck that you will be operating.
If your company buys new equipment that is different from the equipment that you have previously used or if your change jobs and are working on different equipment, then you will need training on these new devices.
There are 8 basic classifications of forklifts/lift trucks. The vehicle's classification is determined by two main factors: the type of fuel used to power it and the type of work or purpose it is used for. To learn more about these different classifications, click here.
Why Following Forklift Certification Requirements in Ontario Is Important
It's the Law: Unlike driving a car, you don’t need an actual license to operate a forklift in Ontario. It is extremely important, however, that you know and follow forklift certification requirements in Ontario because it is the law. If you do not have the proper training and certification required to operate a forklift, then you are not legally allowed to do so.
It Can Save Your Life or Someone Else's: A forklift can be an extremely dangerous piece of equipment. If you haven't been properly trained in the correct safety procedures of operating a lifting device, you run the risk of getting into an accident that can either cause bodily harm or cause fatal injuries for yourself or your co-workers.
It Can Make You a More Efficient and Effective Worker: Proper training will help you become a better forklift operator. You will learn how to work more efficiently and effectively while still being safe. This type of training will make you a more valuable employee for your company.
