Something about Renfield I want to praise is the lighting and shot composition. The sets were pretty and the lighting was always good, even in the darker scenes like in the hospital at night, you could still see everyone’s faces. The sickly green glow gave it a gross feeling, I loved it.

Okay I need to share my Renfield thoughts with the class:

-Between this movie and Warm Bodies, Nicholas Hoult should just play sad goth supernatural boys from now on.

-The househusband energy he was giving while baking cookies for Rebecca as she was recovering from her injuries is hmmmm making me feel things.

-Speaking of Rebecca, this movie fed me my favorite romance trope of Sweet Good Boy and Angry Badass Girl. Bless.

I think Nicholas Cage should get to be Dracula in everything moving forward. In fact i think universal studios could build a whole cinematic universe out of this, with major crossover events like the Avengers but for horror, and i'd watch the heck out of it

While I’m still thinking about Renfield, I love how the movie never attempts to make him into a *~cool macho badass~*

Like yes, he spends a good chunk of the movie doing badass fight scenes and karate-chopping bad guys, but even then he still feels like the timid dork he is the rest of the time.

The way he awkwardly smiles and waves at Rebecca while slamming that guy to the ground at the apartment complex? Poetic cinema. The way his fight scenes (while entertaining to watch) only happen because of his abusive servitude to Dracula? Meanwhile, him taking on brighter colors and more "feminine" hobbies like baking and home decorating is not framed as emasculating and instead a sign that he's becoming a happier, healthier person? *chef's kiss*

I’m tired of male characters being one-dimensional power fantasies. We need more leading men who are pathetic wet cats in human form even when they’re kicking ass.

He drugged and brought many people to their deaths. He doesn't like ska. He's covered in blood for half the movie. He even did coke. I didn't say his name but he popped into your head didn't he?
