April rains took a break for this year's Wayne County Canoe Classic and skies were sunny and temperatures warm for the annual kayak and canoe race.  Over 125 paddlers participated this year racing from the Wayne County Fairgrounds to the nation's first little league field in White Mills.  Not all of the paddlers were there to compete, many just wanted to paddle the Lackawaxen River on a beautiful Saturday morning.  Several local families have been participating in the Wayne County Canoe Classic since its inception in the 1980s. One family has been attending the event for three generations.

Although the Pocono Mountains is a long way from Ukraine, many local communities support efforts to help refugees fleeing the country.  Honesdale High School Interact Club in partnership with Rotary International helped raise over $12,000.00 to help Ukrainian Refugees by hosting a Karaoke for Ukraine night at Wallenpaupack Brewing in Hawley.  Adam Owens from 95.3 DNH hosted the event and provided the equipment for the event.  In addition to raising money to help Ukrainian Refugees, the students also raised over $2000.00 to help eradicate polio as part of the "Purple Pinkie Project". Check out the fun in this segment!

The Two River's Marathon is the first race of the year in the Northern Pocono Mountains and a sign that summer will be coming soon to the Poconos.  Several marathon runner's returned to this year's event to qualify for the Boston Marathon coming up on April 18th.  Although, every runner had their own goals to meet for attending the race festival weekend, one runner was there to support her country, Ukraine.  2022 was the tenth anniversary of the Two River's Marathon Race Festival held every year in Lackawaxen.
Another sign that Winter is coming to an end is the Sloane St. Patrick's Day Parade held near Woodloch in its 23rd year.  This year's Grand Marshall's were Brad & Jen Keisendahl, members of the family that owns Woodloch and supporters of the parade since 1999.  With the exception of the Covid Pandemic, this parade has grown every year and this year had the largest participation in the history of the parade.
Two other events on the calendar for 2022, include the Wayne County Canoe Classic, a kayak and canoe race held on the Lackawaxen River in Wayne County and the Civil War Encampment taking place in Milford at the Columns Museum.  To register for the Wayne County Canoe Classic, visit HonesdaleJaycees.org.

The March Episode of Wally Life is Now Airing on YouTube! March is Women's History month and we take a look at the news making headlines in 1925 which read "A Town That Is Run by Women".  The story made national news that summer and was unheard of in the Untied States at the time.
The Pocono Town that created National Headlines was Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, where in 1925, almost every business was run by women. Hotels, restaurants, butcher shops, cigar stores, clothing stores, movie theater, taxis, tour services, Post Office, milk and mail delivery routes and more.  We salute the women of 1925, who were decades ahead of their time in the United States.
The 36th Annual Rohman's Winter Olympics took place in Shohola on February 26th, with a great turnout and every event was filled with the maximum number of participants.  From plank skiing to bed racing, this is an event you have to experience for yourself.
Don't miss the Two River's Marathon coming up on March 26th & 27th in Lackawaxen. This race is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and there will be athletes from all over the country competing in this two day race weekend.  To register, go to TwoRiversMarathon.com.
St. Patrick's Day is coming up on March 17th and there are several parades scheduled for March 20th, including the Sloane St Patrick's Day Parade at Woodloch Pines.  This low key event features a long rural parade route with lots of vehicles and candy for the kids.  Stroudsburg is also holding it's St. Patrick's Day Parade, which is always a good event.

Every year in the winter months American Bald Eagles travel from areas north of the Pocono and Catskill Mountains to the confluence of the Lackawaxen and Delaware Rivers in Northeast Pennsylvania.  As one of the northern most food sources of fish for the wintering eagles, the intersection of the Lackawaxen and Delaware Rivers does not freeze over and offers a plentiful supply of fish during the coldest months of the year.  This makes Lackawaxen Pennsylvania a prime spot for observing these magnificent birds.  There is nothing like seeing an eagle in its natural environment.  The Delaware Highlands Conservancy runs eagle watching trips, offers an information center, and has self guided eagle tours.  There is also and eagle watching blind located a couple of minutes south of the visitor center on the New York side of the Delaware River.  There are many mating pairs that live in the area year-round with seasonal populations at this time of the year growing exponentially.  Although, the number of eagles has rebounded in the last 10 years, they are still endangered by lead, pollution, and clear cutting of habitats.  If you are looking for things to do in the Poconos in the winter, this is a great family activity.  Lackawaxen is in Pike County located in Northeast PA.
Wally Life is now a Bold Gold Media Production and is still produced by Pocono Mountain Film & TV.

On the coldest day of Winter so far in 2021, we thought that a reminder of the summer, only a few months away, would be in order.  A perfect day on Lake Wallenpaupack in the summer may not necessarily be action packed and adventurous, but sometimes just being around the lake can turn out to be the makings of a great summer day.  As the largest manmade lake in the Pocono Mountains, Wallenpaupack is only one of many lakes in the Poconos of Northeast Pennsylvania and being outdoors on the water is always one of the best things to do in the Poconos Lake Region.

In the Pocono and Catskill Mountains we are surrounded by forests and wild lands.  In the 1800s, there were herds of elk roaming the plateaus, panthers stalking the mountain trails, passenger pigeons filling the skies, and golden eagles soaring over the ridge lines.  There were even sitings of Bigfoot like creatures according to Native American legend.  Due to over hunting, forest clear-cutting, and pollution at the turn of the 20th century, many species were driven out of the area or their populations were severely depleted.  Over a century later, we take a look at the animals that we live with in the Pocono and Catskill Mountains everyday.
