TWO HOURS AGO: an incredible photo taken by a ut austin student capturing something deeply poetic in my opinion, a line of state troopers eagerly waiting to arrest student protesters standing just behind a sign that reads "what starts here changes the world. its starts with you and what you do each day."

Hey, happy Earth Day! Who wants to talk about climate change?
Yeah, okay, fair, I kinda figured the answer to that would be "ugh do we have to?" What if I told you I have good news though? Good news with caveats, but still good news.
What if I told you that since the Paris Agreement in 2015, we've avoided a whole degree celsius of global warming by 2100, or maybe more?
Tumblr media
Current projections are 2.7C, which is way better than the 3-5C (with a median of 3.7C) we were expecting in 2015. It's not where we want to be - 1.5C - but it is big, noticeable progress!
And it's not like we either hit 1.5C and avoid all the big scary consequences or fail to hit 1.5C and get all of them - every tenth of a degree of warming we avoid is going to prevent more severe problems like extreme weather, sea level rise, etc.
This means that climate change mitigation efforts are having a noticeable impact! This means a dramatically better, safer future - and if we keep pushing, we could lower the amount of global warming we end up with even further. This is huge progress, and we need to celebrate it, even though the fight isn't over.
It's working. Keep going.

Students have a history of righteousness. Protesting a genocide in real-time is righteous.
The real monsters want to silence the students.

My new favorite excuse for not jumping on new trends or bandwagons is 'I'm 30.' No more explanation needed because anyone under 30 just thinks I'm old and everyone over 30 understands implicitly

The "get up and do 1 or 2 little things when you feel icky" approach is one of the best discoveries I've made for my mental health.
It's not because unloading the dishwasher made a huge dent in my list of responsibilities, although that helps. No, it just lightens my mind somehow.
I can't describe the icky feeling well, but if I take a second to think about it, I know it when I feel it. A bit of repressed anxiety and guilt masquerading as fatigue and the lack of willpower to do absolutely anything productive. And it gets worse the longer I do nothing instead of better, but I still feel like maybe if I just rest a bit more, then it will pass (which isn't true).
But getting up, doing something easy successfully, and sitting back down does a little refreshing reset. And then it's easier the next time I have to do something that does have a scheduled time or deadline. And I'm also more likely to feel like doing responsible things that don't have a hard deadline like cleaning or exercise or errands. Not usually right then, but later in the day or in the next few days. Which is great, because current self gets almost immediate gratification (sitting right back down after), and future self feels like other things are wayyy easier.
This doesn't solve my depression when I get into a really big spiral with a big looming problem that can't be tackled in 5 minute bursts. But it does make me less likely to get deep into that spiral in the first place.
