QLab: The Industry Standard for Live Event Production
Tumblr media
The magic of live performances often lies in the invisible layers of sound, lighting, and visual effects that bring the stage to life. The synchronicity of these elements can make or break a show, and thus, having a tool that can manage them all effectively is crucial. This is where QLab comes in, offering a central platform for building and controlling show cues, making it an industry standard for live event production. At its core, QLab provides a workspace to create sound, video, lighting, and show control cues. Its design is intuitive, allowing you to generate intricate designs and make changes on the fly. One of the distinguishing features of QLab is its ability to enable remote collaboration. Multiple designers can work on a single workspace, and the show control features can sync across different departments. Once the design is complete, running the show is as simple as pressing the "GO" button. QLab's vast range of features can be explored for free using demo mode. Below, we take a closer look at the powerful capabilities of QLab, focusing on its latest version, QLab 5. Audio QLab is trusted by sound designers worldwide for creating and playing back audio cues for live events. It is straightforward to use, allowing you to drag and drop your audio file into the workspace. QLab supports up to 64 channels of audio output, matrix-based audio routing, multi-channel audio support, audio effects chains, Dante, AVB, and NDI. It also provides sophisticated mixing tools, making it an essential tool for any sound designer.
Tumblr media
Video The video design and projection capabilities of QLab are both reliable and flexible. It supports playing full-screen videos and images and allows the customization of geometry for projection mapping. QLab 5 boasts up to 1,000 video layers, chained video effects, per-cue blend modes, text cues, NDI and Syphon for video input and output, and more. The video engine of QLab 5 was rewritten from scratch, utilizing Apple's new Metal framework to increase the power and flexibility of video features.
Tumblr media
Lighting QLab's lighting feature allows you to patch and control lights with the same flexibility and intuitive cuing used for audio and video. The platform supports an unlimited number of DMX universes over Art-Net or USB and comes with hundreds of lighting instrument definitions. You can even add your own definitions to the QLab library.
Tumblr media
Collaboration The ability to collaborate is a new feature in QLab 5, where multiple users can log into a single workspace. This feature enables remote editing of designs, collaboration across departments, and even giving stage managers read-only access.
Tumblr media
Workflow QLab's modules are powerful individually, but their integration is where the software truly shines. Customization options are abundant: you can trigger one cue from another, start multiple sound effects simultaneously, create a randomly looping playlist, or even set cues to start based on the time of day. Timeline mode lets you adjust the relative start times of your cues with drag and drop, while Cart mode enables cue triggering with the press of a button.
Tumblr media
Show Control For show control, QLab supports OSC, MIDI, and timecode protocols for ingoing or outgoing signals. QLab 5 now also syncs to incoming time code. Network cues can send custom OSC, ASCII, and Hex messages over TCP or UDP. These robust show control tools make QLab an integral part of complex, multi-department live shows. QLab 5 is a free program, with additional optional features that can be unlocked by purchasing and installing a license. You can experiment with QLab's advanced features for free in demo mode, which lasts for 60 minutes. While in demo mode, all of QLab’s licensed features are available, but copying cues and settings into the demo workspace is disabled. After demo mode expires, or after the workspace is saved, closed, and reopened, licensed features will once again require a license. QLab 5 Features by License Type QLab 5 is designed with a tiered licensing system that allows you to access the features you need. The basic version of QLab is free and includes a host of powerful features. Additional capabilities are available with Audio, Video, and Lighting licenses. These licenses unlock advanced features such as multi-channel audio output, unlimited video layers, full-stage Video cues, and patchable DMX addresses, among others. Features in Detail Below is a detailed breakdown of the major features enabled by each type of license: - Audio Features: With an Audio license, you get access to 64 channels of audio output, unlimited slices per Audio or Video cue, audio waveform view, sample-accurate playback sync, audio fades, audio playback rate fading, and more. - Video Features: The Video license unlocks unlimited single-output and multi-output video stages, 1000 video layers, full-stage Video cues, custom geometry Video cues, video fades, video playback rate fading, and more. - Lighting Features: With a Lighting license, you can control unlimited patchable DMX addresses and addressable universes, use the RGB+ and CMY graphical color picker, and build your own instrument definitions. - Networking & Show Control Features: All licenses offer the ability for remote control via OSC, MIDI, MSC, iOS app, with the added ability to act as Collaboration Primary or Remote, and send Network cues, MIDI cues, MIDI File cues, Timecode cues, and Timecode triggers. - Workflow & Programming Features: All licenses provide access to unlimited cue lists, unlimited cue carts, live fade previews, pause cues, devamp cues, target cues, arm & disarm cues, script cues, and workspace settings import & export. Mapping Festival 2023 Celebrates Low Tech Art
Tumblr media
The highly anticipated Mapping Festival 2023 is set to take place from May 18th to Sunday, May 28th, with a particular emphasis this year on low tech art. The outdoor event will be held at Jardin des Nations, offering audiences a unique experience to engage with performances that ingeniously use salvage and human energy as a source of creativity. In keeping with the low tech theme, the festival will showcase works that are low-carbon and environmentally friendly, providing a platform for artists who create minimal impact on the environment. The musical line-up will be hosted on a small stage built from local wood, constructed in association with La Barje, a community organization already present on the site. A notable highlight of the festival is the Salle de Sonance, an immersive sound space imagined by Alican Okan and constructed by the MelUsine collective using reclaimed wood from the site. Alican Okan, a composer and sound artist from Istanbul, is known for his passion for creating instruments from recycled materials. The MelUsine collective aims to train individuals to be autonomous and foster a sense of community through shared skills and services. Geneva-based artist Thierry Anderegg will showcase his remarkable sculptures, “The Fitness Monster” and “La Macchina Infernale”, which are animated by human strength. His work echoes the bizarre and humorous style of Swiss artist Tinguely, incorporating elements of science fiction and engaging audiences through an interactive ballet of movement, sound, and light. The festival also features a unique electro-solar concert by DJ Nøs and Antoine Meissonnier. DJ Nøs will utilize a bicycle-cargo-sound system powered by photovoltaic panels, while Antoine will interactively project captured light objects in sync with the music. This collaborative performance promises to be a sensorial feast, merging Antoine's textured visuals with Nøs' contemplative sounds. Renowned artist Oilhack is set to perform live, creating a stunning spectacle of color using his world-famous oils, while Troffea Bahn will take attendees on a psychedelic journey with his acid techno DJ sets. For children, an interactive upcycling workshop called “Joue à ton rythme” provides an intuitive approach to music, encouraging participants to create their own instruments from everyday objects. In a collaboration with Out of the Box & Cap Loisirs, the festival will present "Triphonie", an inclusive concert created by visual artists, amateur musicians, and professionals, with and without disabilities. The performance is set to offer a sensory experience that may hold some surprises for audiences. Rounding off the festival will be the performance "Demystifying the Æther" by Félicien Goguey and Matthias Hurtl, a culmination of a five-day workshop exploring electromagnetic waves. This year's Mapping Festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of low tech creativity, offering a diverse lineup of performances, installations, and workshops that blend art, music, and technology in unique and environmentally-friendly ways. The Mapping Festival 2023 is not only a platform for established artists but also encourages budding creators to showcase their talent. The “VJ Contest” is a testament to this spirit, where new artists are invited to take part in a live visual performance competition. The contestants will be evaluated by a panel of seasoned professionals in the field. This exciting event ensures the festival's commitment to fostering creativity at all levels. For those interested in acquiring new skills, the festival has arranged a series of educational programs. Workshops focusing on low tech tools and methods will be conducted by artists like Alican Okan and Félicien Goguey. These hands-on sessions will provide attendees with the opportunity to explore the creative possibilities of low-tech art and its potential for environmental sustainability. The festival also acknowledges the importance of critical discussions in the field of art and technology. A series of round tables will provide a space for dialogue and debate, where artists, researchers, and the public can discuss various topics related to the intersection of technology, art, and society. The evening performances will be a sensory delight, with the festival grounds turning into an arena of interactive light and sound installations. Among these, the 'Interactive Fire Garden' by Cie Carabosse promises to be a crowd-puller. It's a magical installation where fire becomes a medium of art, bringing warmth, light, and a unique beauty to the space. The festival finale is a spectacle not to be missed. The closing party features artists such as DJ Windows XP, Kassiel, and Oilhack, promising a night filled with vibrant music and visuals. Attendees will have the opportunity to dance the night away, surrounded by the immersive, low tech art that has defined the festival. True to its core theme of low tech art, Mapping Festival 2023 is set to provide attendees with a unique blend of art and technology. Its focus on environmental sustainability and inclusivity makes it a significant event on the cultural calendar. By providing a platform for artists who push the boundaries of creativity while minimizing environmental impact, the festival sets a precedent for future cultural events.

The four-day event featured an extensive program, spanning from Thursday to Sunday, with activities taking place from 15:00 until late at night. Despite the ongoing conflict involving Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, LPM approached its pre-pandemic 2019 numbers. The event was particularly significant due to the presence of three artists from Odessa, Kharkiv, and Kherson, as well as an artist from St. Petersburg. A total of 249 artists from 32 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam, participated in the event. The LPM 2022 program included 74 Audio Visual Performances, 15 Video Mappings, 20 VJ/DJ Sets, and 4 Audio Visual Installations, offering a unique and unforgettable spectacle. Roundtables, workshops, and presentations of new products and hardware were also part of the program. For the first time, the theme of Video Mapping was "PEACE," with 15 artists from various countries transforming the façade of Nuovo Cinema Aquila using this powerful concept. Video Mapping is a projection technique that animates architectural objects, creating a captivating and surprising effect that confuses and seduces our perceptions. Another novelty was the "Made in Italy" selections for the upcoming Live Cinema Festival, which will be held in September at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. Ten artists presented live AV Performances in Room 2 on June 11th. LPM serves as a meeting place and a significant opportunity for dialogue and exchange, fostering research and experimentation in various forms of artistic expression in the field of Audio Visual Performing Arts. The event functions as a think tank that promotes the collective project, calling on audiovisual performing artists to collaborate and be proactive in shaping the future of AVarts. Since 2004, LPM has hosted more than 6,247 artists, 3,307 performances, workshops, and showcases, with a total of 73 participating countries and over 1.5 million visitors attending editions in Xalapa, Minsk, Mexico City, Cape Town, Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Puglia, and Rome. With 18 years of experience, LPM has successfully outlined a conceptual map of the major trends influencing Audio Visual Performing Arts over time. LPM is part of AVnode (https://avnode.net), an international network promoting Audio Visual Performing Arts culture through events, festivals, and educational initiatives worldwide. Tumblr media
Vjing, or video jockeying, is a creative process that involves creating and manipulating visual media in real-time, often in sync with music or other audio elements. It is a dynamic and constantly evolving art form that allows performers to create immersive visual experiences for audiences. The creative process of vjing involves a wide range of skills and techniques, including video editing, compositing, animation, audio processing, and real-time visual effects. It also requires an understanding of the principles of visual design, such as color theory, composition, and lighting. Another important aspect of the creative process of vjing is the ability to create and manipulate media in sync with music or other audio elements. This can involve using software and hardware tools to analyze and extract the beat and tempo of a track, and then synchronizing visual effects and transitions to this beat. It can also involve using software instruments and controllers to create and control visual effects in real-time.
Tumblr media
Finally, the creative process of vjing also involves understanding the aesthetics and goals of a particular performance or event, and using this understanding to create visual media that is appropriate and effective. This can involve working closely with other artists, such as musicians or DJs, to create a cohesive and immersive experience for the audience. It can also involve adapting to the needs and expectations of different audiences, such as creating visuals for music festivals, club events, or corporate events.
