Hadestown is the best take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, because all over the internet I see people say, "You're not supposed to think of how he could have succeeded! That misses the total point of the story. Everyone was doomed and there was no way anything could have worked out alright. If you're imagining a scenario that didn't end in tragedy, you're just an arrogant fool. Just shut up and be sad about it"
But Hadestown says, "please please please think of how it could have been. Orpheus would have never looked back if he just had hope, please have hope, he would have wanted us to have hope. If you don't walk out of this theater thinking of how it could have been, we have failed you. go have hope, go see the world in the way it could be, so help us"

Pride isn’t a “queer-friendly space”, pride IS queer space.
Kink doesn’t “belong” at pride, kink IS pride.
To say that these things are just-kind-of-also-included is such a diluted view of what these things actually are. These spaces have been mentally purified for so many people as things that are “also-okay-for-gays!”–
No!!
These spaces ARE OURS. Not just “friendly to us”. Not just “inclusive to us”. They ARE us. We don’t just “belong”… We’re the reason it exists in the first place!

Feeling a lot of feelings about how Hadestown doesn't present the story as "Orpheus turned around and everything fell apart and there was nothing anyone could do to fix it" and instead presents a story that says "he turned around, he doubted, he failed, but if we keep telling his story maybe one day Orpheus won't" and it's not just about Orpheus as a single character, it's a bout every Orpheus, everyone who runs up against a system they can't change and fails and everyone who sees that failure and gets back up and says "maybe I can change it now" and tries again. That Orpheus failed isn't the takeaway of the story. The takeaway is that one day he might succeed.

hadestown orpheus and eurydice are so. she loves her cringefail husband. he looks like a 16 year old boy at his first prom. he plays wonderwall for her so good it solves climate change. she's a runaway from everywhere she's ever been and just wants him to take her home. he unionizes amazon. they are everything.

im so worried about esteban fr folks. like he and cecil liking the same ice cream was sweet until that ending. how much trauma is esteban going to end up inheriting just because the gerschwin-palmer family has something deeply, deeply wrong with it?
