i’m specifically talking about terrys features in the cover art, he has textured hair, a wider nose and fuller lips which are all black features, i know like 3 different black men who look exactly like tj looks in the season 2 cover LMAO
the skin colors for the characters are basically obsolete because of the color filter over all of it so i was talking about facial features and hair texture and such
wanna preface this by saying i AM vague posting a specific popular dndads artist and i am not sorry about it
terry jr, being the objectively best father in season 2 (arguably in the entire series) being portrayed as white feels just completely disgusting to me.
already in media black fathers are rarely seen in a positive light, often falling into the "absent black father" trope, having terry be a positive role model while also being black is something that is very important to me as a black person
drawing terry jr as a white blonde guy feels just so genuinely racist to me and if you see terry as white i want you to really look into why that is
this artist i am talking about CAN draw black people, can draw curly hair and can draw black features, in fact they even draw nicky (who isn't canonically black) with curly hair and black features which is something else that rubs me 100% the wrong way
nicky is canonically chinese and ALSO happens to be... AN ABSENT FATHER!!!
as someone who does see nicky as blasian there is nothing wrong with drawing nicky with black features, there IS however something wrong with drawing the canonically black "good dad" as white, and then drawing the canonically non-black "absent dad" as black
my genuine question for this person is just why.
if your argument is "its just a headcanon" i ask you to reflect on yourself on why you have those headcanons in the first place because it might be to some prejudices you probably hold within yourself
this is not a cancelation thing or a dogpiling thing this is a "i am black and i am tired" thing
being a black person in fandom is fucking hard ya'll

guys i am regretting making that initial post so bad LMAO.
i really am not in the mood to argue with ppl every time i log onto tumblr so if i’m not longer responding to that post that is why, i an still standing with my argument and i doubt anything will change that
even if the talking dads aren’t canon terry jr is black on the season 2 cover and i fully believe something like a characters canon race shouldn’t be changed in a fan design
even if the everything is alright poster isnt canon on the season 2 cover terry has textured hair, a wider nose and fuller lips, he is black
ok i’m done now thanks guys 🙌

i’m going to be honest i didn’t initially see that reblog which is my fault completely but i did mention it was in the talking dads and also he is black on the season 2 cover

it was in one of the talking dads, i will try and find it because in all honesty i completely forgot which one
this, was again why i wasn’t faulting you for initially not knowing terry jr was black but honestly if everyone in a fandom is drawing a specific character as black did it never cross your mind there might be a reason why? on the season 2 cover he is drawn black (you could argue it’s hard to tell but lets be so real for a second that is a black man) and in the argument “people do that usually follow those designs” while that is true, i am one of those people, people tend to not follow those designs with things like hairstyles and clothes and i fully believe you should be following those designs when it comes to something like race

ya’ll im genuinely sorry for causing like “drama” in a usually unproblematic fandom, imma be so real the post i made did have anger behind it because i was just incredibly frustrated and agitated LMAO but i appreciate the people understanding where i’m coming from
i think smthn a lot of ppl don’t get is being black in fandom (and in general) means your guard is always up, you’re always on alert for micro-aggressions and racism because you’re so used to seeing it
ok that’s it bye guys and thank u again

i’m sorry calling this hostility or calling my post nasty is absolutely insane?? i never insulted this person i specified multiple times i wasn’t calling them a racist how was this post nasty or hostile?
i do think i definitely could’ve handled this privately and my original post did have a lot of anger behind it but calling it nasty is absolutely wild
the reason i posted this publicly was because i wanted to share how i personally felt, as a black person, about what was happening. especially because there are so few black people active in the dndads fandom
i didn’t assume they had bad intentions and have even said that, i just wanted to share the fact that these headcanons might’ve been shrouded in pre-conceived notions on black fathers, i now know that was wrong and that it was a misunderstanding but can you really blame me for assuming when black fathers in media are perpetually treated like garbage?
want to say i am an autistic person and if this did come off as “hostile” i apologize for that but i tried my best to come off as clear and concise as possible and honestly (i hate people throwing around this term) this feels so much like tone policing, i would understand calling this post nasty if i insulted them but i didn’t? and thats why i am so confused on how you interpreted this post

i can understand being new to the fandom and also understand not having access to the talking dads, where terry jr being black was canonized, but he is explicitly a black character and not having a canon design doesn’t make him any less black.
and to be honest even i just assumed terry was white in the beginning of the series too without indulging in any fan media because most characters in most medias happen to be white (which is an issue by itself, and also me just assuming terry was white is again, another issue) but my opinion was changed when i saw official art and fan interpretation, and that is where my problem with you continuing to portray terry as white lies
my problem lies in the fact that terry is a canonically black character, is shown as black in his 2 official arts, stated BY ANTHONY as being black and is universally seen as a black person by the fandom. and yet you continue to draw him as a white blonde person which absolutely rubs me the wrong way
this, again, isn’t me calling you racist it’s me being uncomfortable by a black character being drawn as white

i saw someone say that terry is “usually portrayed as white/having light skin” which cannot be further from the truth, here is a photo of terry jr(along with his mom) from the official everything is alright poster
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they are both obviously black, and even on the season 2 poster where it is monochrome he is obviously not white
Tumblr media
and in a talking dads episode (if you remember which one please remind me) anthony flat our states that terry and samantha are black
drawing terry jr as anything but black IS whitewashing, he is a black character, has been officially drawn as black and even stated as being black by the DM
i’m genuinely so sick of seeing white terry jr art as a black person in this predominantly white fandom, there is something so uncomfortable seeing specifically terry being portrayed as white, i’m going to make another post talking more about how i about this subject but terry jr is black point blank
drawing characters who are only ever portrayed as black as white is in fact whitewashing
it doesn’t matter if its a podcast, or a book, or anything thats not always a visual medium
if a character is officially drawn/stated as a poc and then you draw them white you are whitewashing that character
period
