nothing is as tender as annotating your favourite books. it’s like leaving a piece of your heart on the pages for somebody else to find.

Happy Wednesday! 📚✨ Sharing the non-fiction corner of my bookshelf. I have some more on the other side but I hope to further grow them sooner. Favorite Reads among them (aside from the Obama memoirs) are the two below as they relate to rhetorics: • I Dare Say • Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln The rest are read, unread, or DNF 😁 Just quickly dropping by bookstagram and will be back to real life in a while 👩🏻‍💻👩🏻‍💻👩🏻‍💻 https://www.instagram.com/p/CSJkcJ2lnIR/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s August! ✨ I haven’t picked up a book lately and haven’t made much progress with my current read either. I’m afraid I’m a wee bit preoccupied but I hope to be back on track sometime within the month. Overall, I’m happy to read at my own pace especially I was on a year-long (probably even longer) reading slump prior to joining bookstagram. Yeah 🥲😂 I’m encouraged to read when I see all your posts here and even moreso during wrap-ups! So here’s to another bookish month 🤗 https://www.instagram.com/p/CSDfAS_hVSu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy weekend! Just sharing my next read. I know this has been all over bookstagram and considering its synopsis, it sounds like a good read so I’m giving this a go. I’ll probably start tomorrow though . Also, the same author has a new book coming out and reading it would depend on how this one goes. Fingers crossed. Hope you’re having a restful weekend — whether mental, emotional, or physical rest! https://www.instagram.com/p/CRwJXhHLQk1/?utm_medium=tumblr

This book is hilarious and full of twists. No dull moments 🌟 Dial A for Aunties is page-turner about (1) comedic yet realistic peak Asian family culture, sometimes with a dash of Crazy Rich Asians vibes here and there, (2) thrilling yet entertaining — though less realistic — murder mystery or better yet, literally how to get away with murder, and (3) a sappy smooth-sailing romance. I love how I can vividly picture the meddlesome yet funny Asian aunties. I love their banters and the friction among them. They sealed the deal for me on this one. And I got waaay more than that as I went along. Swear I was laughing and gooey and thrilled all throughout. PS. Looking forward to its Netflix film adapatation. (And it’s sequel too!) Title: Dial A for Aunties Author: Jesse Q. Sutanto Publication Date: April 2021 Genre: Humorous Fiction, Mystery, Romance Novel https://www.instagram.com/p/CRnxDJ4L86b/?utm_medium=tumblr

CURRENT READ: Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa (Japanese Fiction) Synopsis reads: a charming tale of friendship, love and loneliness in contemporary Japan. I’ve just finished a feel-good, funny novel so I thought of changing the mood a bit. And this one I chose as I find it fitting with the weather — it’s gloomy and rainy and feels like I need some comfort reads. Hope I get some with this. Probably will edit this post after reading to include my thoughts on the book. In the meantime, swipe for a lot more photos! Have you read this? It’s rainy where I am, hope you’re all safe and dry 😁 https://www.instagram.com/p/CRlE_pprq7B/?utm_medium=tumblr

What are you currently reading? 📚 I know we’re several days in but I’m just starting to read a book this week 😅 I’m currently reading Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto and I’m feeling good about it so far 💚 ABOUT THE BOOK: Another, and the last, post on ASOUE. Pictured here is my favorite among the thirteen books. I love The Wide Window because this is where Sunny, Violet, Klaus unfolded a mystery through linguistics! By using their knowledge in grammar 🤓 And that’s very much interesting. Hope you’re having a good week so far 🤗 📖 https://www.instagram.com/p/CRU6F9tLHF5/?utm_medium=tumblr

What book made you fall in love with reading? 🤓
I initially came across A Series of Unfortunate Events in its 2004 movie adaptation. I loved it so much I watched it over and over again as a grade school student. In this phase, I was not yet into short stories much less novels. I was more into textbooks, children’s magazines, and photo books. Years later I would discover that it was a children’s series and that the movie shortly featured books 1-3. Quickly, I would then search for ebook copies and went through all of them swiftly.
At that point came a shift in my reading interest. I started reading novels and collecting books. They were all bought at a discount, mostly from Manila International Book Fair (MIBF). Some were also gifts and one were bought secondhand from an underpass bookstore.
This series may narrate endless unfortunate events but stumbling upon them is one of the fortunate moments in my reading journey ❤️
How did your reading journey start? 😊

Currently pretending I have nothing else better to do on a weekend but be in a bookish mood.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Paper Towns is one of my fave YAs. I’ve read this when I was just starting to discover my fondness of the same genre. It’s mainly because of the mysterious female lead whom I was really channeling before. (I did not like the movie as much though) Which character from a book seems to have (un)consciously influenced you in real life? For me, among many others, it’s Margo Roth Spiegelman of Paper Towns.
PS. Missed taking bookish portraits of myself, kindly excuse me a bit, lols!

BOOKMARKS / BOOK FAIRS ✨
These are the bookmarks that I use and they are passes to the book fairs I’ve been to. I love me some functional (and sentimental) bookish souvenirs!
These bookish events are:
▪️ Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) - managed to attend for 5 consecutive years. 36th-40th (2015-2019) though I can’t quite find the bookmark for 39th. ▪️ Big Bad Wolf (BBW) Book Sale - attended for 2 consecutive years. One regular pass, can’t find it either, and one VIP pass.
And this reminds me of how much I miss going to physical book fairs. I’m glad that both events have successfully transitioned online in the meantime and I’m looking forward to having them soon just like the old times — or maybe somehow close to it. 📖 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ93xUiL-nY/?utm_medium=tumblr

ARE YOU A MOOD READER TOO? 🤔😁 Finished reading this early in June though I was not able to post about it then. I’ve read this following a self-help book and alongside a memoir so it was way different of an experience. In terms of fiction, I figured I’m more into magical realism than fantasy 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸 so this is currently not my cup of tea. But this is without prejudice to the book, of course! I’ve read Marie Lu’s Legend Trilogy and found it gripping so I would like to believe the same about this! While I did enjoy reading The Young Elites — got intrigued of the unexpected ending and excited about Adelina’s character development — I’ll probably spread the rest of the trilogy within the second half of the year. No self-imposed pressure, lols. Because that’s how reading should be, right? Among other serious ways to view it, it’s a leisurely activity 🥳 QOTD: Do you sometimes get diverted from reading a series/genre too? What was it? Hello, mood readers! 👋🏻 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ7QMRTL_u8/?utm_medium=tumblr

✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨ This duology centered on a café that gave its customers the chance to go back into the past. It narrated heartwarming stories that explored mainly regrets, love, and hope in varying human relationships. This felt like a collection of short stories as each chapter focused individually on distinct customers of the shop and could be understood if read separately. The storyline as well was similar across all chapters in the first book, with some differences in the second. There was, however, a gradual disclosure of the backstories of the supporting characters in the café which, aside from making it fit to be read chronologically, brought increased connection and appreciation. Takeaway from this is that life, if not revolves, drifts back into the people that we love. And that no matter what took place in the past and the uncertainty of the future, we are free to hope, to allow happiness, and to start over if needed. “Seasons flow in a cycle. Life too, passes through difficult winters. But after any winter, spring will follow.” Recommended for the touching stories and emotional pull. A quick read. Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Book 1 - 3.8/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⚡️ Book 2 - 4.0/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ4B3I9rEFO/?utm_medium=tumblr

Pride Reads 🌈 Before June ends I would like to share these queer reads. I read Will Grayson, Will Grayson way back in 2015 and I remember being confused about the POV in the beginning, if you have read this, you’ll know! On the other hand, I read Aristotle and Dante in 2018 and picked it up out of my sheer interest in the title. Both of which I had no idea then that they are pride books until I read onwards. I sure need to reread them though as I have forgotten most parts but I can recall the mere reading experience and I’d say that I had a great time — my younger self enjoyed both books and grew to love the characters in the end. Rated them both 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads. 📖 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQmo-vdrOZy/?utm_medium=tumblr

✨ UNWRAPPING ✨ QOTD: Who’s character in literature is your father figure? Or closely resembles being a father to you. Mine would be Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird — which is one of my favorite books. He has a courteous relationship with his children, a solid integrity, and he leads by example. I lost my father at a young age so I look up to Atticus so much. And this is one of the very reasons why I love reading — literature fills in the gaps. Happy Father’s Day! About the video: I went to a physical bookstore since I miss being outside and I could not wait to have my hands on these Japanese books. 📖 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQWTkFBF5zh/?utm_medium=tumblr

THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY 💙 What would you do if you woke up to a seemingly boundless library where each book tells the story of the life you could have lived? The Midnight Library by Matt Haig explored this idea. Started with low spirits, the book grew interesting as it progressed. It immersed and allured readers into a bookish daydream. The middle may have slightly lost me, but it pulled me back in entirely towards the ending. It evoked deep emotions, stirred realizations and left me lost in thoughts. This dealt primarily with regrets, life decisions, and dreams. If you’re highly plot driven, this book may fall short of the hype, but if you incline more towards how a character develops and the meaning it carries, then this may suit your liking. It was teeming with analogies and symbolisms that were concisely effective in reinforcing the message of the book: That life has infinite possibilities which extend beyond imagination and it’s up to us how to live it. ▪️Bonus personal point: it is a philosophical fiction hence the frequent mention of philosophers and writers. ▪️Trigger Warning: depression, suicide, self-harm Reading is a personal private experience. The book does not only bring what it has to you, but you also bring what you have to the book. And this book highly resonates with me at this phase of my life. I’m so glad to have read it 💙✨ https://www.instagram.com/p/CQLm_MVrHKf/?utm_medium=tumblr
