Haramacy
Haramacy is a “love letter to the diaspora”(Sultan, 2022) containing stories and essays from the Middle Eastern and South Asian diaspora. Curated by Zahed Sultan, British Kuwaiti-Indian multimedia artist who advocates for connection and representation. Sultan is most well known for his live stage music productions and his same titled project “Haramacy” which aims to create a community for those voices that have not been represented in the media.
One of the chapters I liked the most is “Gary is not my Name” by Dhruva Balram. In this chapter, Balram narrates his experiences of moving to Canada from India at a young age and the struggles of not feeling like he belongs in the respective countries. The title of the chapter is named after a circumstance where his English teacher could not be bothered to learn his name so he designated him a typical English name.
In order to feel accepted by his peers he woul exaggerate stories of India. Balram created a hyperreality (Baudrillard,1981), where he couldn’t separate fiction from real events to comfort himself from feeling othered. The feelings of hopelessness and loneliness started to disappear as he discovered artists who represented what life was like being torn between two cultures, like HateCopy.
Balram emphasises in this chapter that individuals should reclaim their heritage and be proud. Diasporic identities are “forced to remedy curiosity before remediating their own” (Chew-Bose, 2017) when they are asked questions about their identity. The feeling of restlessness for the next generation can be soothed by the creative industry producing authentic work about their heritage and diaspora.

when Rory Gilmore said, "I live in two worlds, one is a world of books. I've been a resident of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, hunted the white whale aboard the Pequod, fought alongside Napoleon, and danced at the Jellicoe Ball. I've seen the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked. I should be a postage stamp, because that's the only way I'll ever get licked. I'm a citizen of Stars Hollow, the most magical place on Earth. I've wrestled with the likes of Kirk, danced with Miss Patty, and sang with the town troubadour. I've lived on a street with the most colorful characters you will ever find. Yes, I have many friends, but my biggest fear is that I'll turn out like one of those Tana French novels, where nothing is ever really resolved and everyone just goes on living their messed-up lives. So I've learned to settle. Settle for the fact that I'll never know what happened to the Romanovs. Settle for the fact that if I ever have kids, they won't know what it's like to grow up with a father. Settle for the fact that my best friend is a woman who's been dead for 40 years. Settle for the fact that I've spent the last 16 years watching backup dancers become stars and pop stars become drug addicts. And I've learned to settle for a life that will never be half as extraordinary as the one I've imagined." It was a beautiful and memorable speech! 💌

Nostos is a thematic narrative used in Ancient Greek literature, in which a hero [as Odysseus] returns home by sea. A return weaved by algos, a thread of pain longing for an unreachable past.
Nostos (return) + Algos (suffering) =Nostalgia
