- I have the living legend who gave it all up to be a pretend coach in order to get with a sloppy drunk, a sadist of a female skater who stirs up trouble on purpose, an angsty teen who can’t tell the difference between having a crush and hating someone and an emo skater who is far too old to be as emo as he is. Kill me now.

Episode Seven

- Maybe I was giving Victor a disservice. His student is actually doing quite well and maybe they are taking it seriously and HOLY FUCK NEVERMIND JUST KISS YOUR STUDENT IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD VICTOR YOU ASSHAT

Episode Eight

Hey guys, so I never make posts like this or, frankly, usually care about polls like this. But over the past day or so this particular one has struck a nerve with me and I was wondering if you could please hear me out. I’m a bisexual man, and this is something I wouldn’t have been able to declare this easily even a couple of years ago, and a huge part of helping me reach this place has been seeing myself depicted onscreen. And it hasn’t been until very recently that I realized how much Victor and Yuuri have meant to me.

Now, I can already here some of you saying to yourselves “Well Andy that’s fine and good, but I don’t care about YOI and Klance means a lot to me” and I’m not invalidating that. Hell, I like Klance. But at the end of the day the casual viewer isn’t gonna watch the show as see Keith and Lance as mlm characters, but every viewer of YOI will see Victor and Yuri as mlm characters in some level of an intense relationship with one another. And if we really value representation as much as we say we do, shouldn’t we reward shows that come through for us? Elevating canon LGBTQ characters and relationships tells media creators that this is what we want to see in the media we consume.

Now, some of you may say, why does it even matter? It’s just a dumb fan poll and god Andrew you need to stop taking it so seriously it’s just shipping. And hey, on some level you’re right. But please keep in mind that that Klance, a non-canon relationship, winning this tournament over canon mlm and wlw from not only Yuri On Ice, but Sense8 and several others as well, you’re sending a different type of message to media creators as well. And that message is that subtext is good enough, and they don’t need to put forth the effort to portray canon gay relationships in canon because fans won’t care either way. Don’t believe me? Back during season 2 of Teen Wolf, the show’s social media team openly used fans of the popular, non-canon ship Sterek to win fan polls just like this one and generate publicity for the show. The show went so far as to have the two actors who play the characters film a queerbaity video together asking fans to vote for the show to win a Teen Choice Award (which it did). All the while the production team of the show strung along fans with the idea that if they were loud enough the subtext might become main text. Spoiler alert: It didn’t. In fact, the next season saw the two characters share little screen time before one of them was written off the show entirely. And the show, now very popular, made an active effort to market toward casual straight teen fans and away from the demos that helped them win all those polls.

Now am I suggesting the Teen Wolf situation and the Voltron situation are the same? Absolutely not. For one thing, Voltron staff have never baited fans with the possibility that Klance might become canon, and have never used Klance fans as a vehicle for marketing the show. What the Teen Wolf situation is, however, is a real life example of how promoting the idea that fanon gay ships are “good enough” can have a negative impact on actual LGBTQ fans, and LGBTQ rep in general.

TL;DR Please support canon LGBTQ representation in media when you get chances like this. Klance winning this poll isn’t gonna send the message that “Fans want it so it should be canon” - it’ll send the message that “Fanon is good enough, and there isn’t a need to have canon LGBTQ rep because fans will be just as happy either way.”

MAPPA just showed artwork at their VAX Malaysia panel featuring Noriko Itou, Tadashi Hiramatsu, and Manabu Otsuka of Victuuri of the rings and it looks like there is a little detail we didn’t know about. The inside of the rings features a snowflake engraving! Each ring only has a half of the snowflake though, so of course, in order to get the full one, you have to have the pair. 

‘They’re a pair’ takes on a whole new meaning. Wow. This is absolutely lovely. ♥  ( twitter source )
