ASMR4, Vol. 10 – Trailcam Photographs by Bill & Tony is now published.
ASMR4 is a small run, quarterly publication co-edited by Katie Murray, Victoria Sambunaris, Dan Torop, and Adam Putnam. The first four volumes of this project served as both conversation and message. The subsequent four focused on the strange and forgotten. ASMR4 Vol. 10 is the second in the current series, which fixates on the obsessive and anachronistic.
Trailcam Photographs are photographs of survival.
Pilot Peak was a landmark for the Donner Party on the emigrant trail. In September 1846, they abandoned their wagons and oxen to reach Pilot Springs at the foot of Pilot Peak after a treacherous journey across the Great Salt Lake Desert, unaware of their destiny that lay ahead.
Near Pilot Peak, in the remote mountains of northeast Nevada, sits another testimony to survival. In this parched desert landscape, which receives an average of 8.27 inches of rain per year, there is a trough where animals flock to satiate their thirst.

Camped out at an orange grove in Bakersfield. The song continues. The campgrounds have been populated, many trying to flee the cities during Covid and others yearly snowbirds. But an increasing amount are workers and homeless who can no longer afford a home of any kind.#campinglife #ontheroad #brokendreams https://www.instagram.com/p/CIYfm9mlmxB/?igshid=n95quvdppy70

Sunsets are not my norm, I usually like to sit and watch them but this one by the Salton Sea last night was phenomenal. The sounds of all the migrating birds and people gasping are in the background. #saltonsea #dramaticskys #campingontheedge https://www.instagram.com/p/CH5owWlFamu/?igshid=1fhl7xwm7v6rh

This is my final post for my takeover of the Yancey Richardson IG (@yanceyrichardsongallery). I hope you’ve enjoyed getting a glimpse into my time on the road. I finally arrived in Southern California, my final destination where I will work until mid December. My first venture was to the catastrophic Salton Sea. The Plagues and Pleasures of the Salton Sea is worth a watch on YouTube to understand how our actions can result in detrimental effects . The only way for me to face it was with my rose-tinted glasses. Afterwards, I made my way to the Anza-Borrego Desert where I’ll say good-night. #anzaborregodesert #bowwillow #americanlandscape #saltonsea #californiadreaming https://www.instagram.com/p/CH3dt8tFwnS/?igshid=1ozozwejcjgyu

I’m continuing my takeover of the Yancey Richardson IG. For the next few days I’ll be posting images from my journey across the country to install my solo exhibition, Far Out: The West Re-Seen at BYU Museum of Art (@byumoa), and continuing on to Southern California to begin work on a new project. After Provo, I began to move south, temperatures were dropping but I kept ahead of them as I moved south on Route 12 through Torey, Utah near Capital Reef National Park and on to Boulder, Escalante and through Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The dramatic landscape transformed through my windshield and before my eyes. My Utah friend, geologist and photographer @rokbreaker keeps me informed about the Utah landscape and sees the world in geological time. It keeps one in check in regards to our fleeting time here on this earth. Along the way, I met these recreators tearing it up. https://www.instagram.com/p/CH0p8PelwvM/?igshid=ra7ssnir9xp4

My first destination was in Provo, Utah to install my show at Brigham Young University Museum of Art @byumoa curated by Janalee Emmer. The exhibition includes 40 pieces from my work in the West. The jewel for me was curating a room of photographs and paintings from the museum’s permanent collection including figures such as Maynard Dixon, Albert Bierstadt, Richard Misrach, Mark Klett and new discoveries such as the primitive painter Francis Hoorspool and Michael Slade/Kimberly Anderson What can re-viewing the photographs, artifacts and collections of earlier artists in this collection tell us about their working method and the way they perceived the world, their intimacies, and their alternate or even unconscious views? #farout #byuma #markklett #richardmisrach #francishoorspool #kimberlyanderson #maynarddixon #albertbierstadt #americanlandscape https://www.instagram.com/p/CHyPOJAlOhT/?igshid=l4f03987budh

My takeover of the @yanceyrichardsongallery continues. For the next few days I’ll be posting images from my journey across the country. You can see more images there. Continuing through Wyoming I stopped in Green River, where John Wesley Powell began his expedition down the Green and Colorado Rivers to the Grand Canyon in 1869. On the border of Wyoming and Utah, I arrived at another familiar site that I photographed in 2007, back then it was a snowy Echo Canyon. Through this gateway passed the pioneers, the Donner Party, the Mormon covered wagons, the Pony Express, the telegraph and stage lines and the Union Pacific Railroad. Today, Interstate 80. It remains a point of exhilaration as I anticipate what lies ahead in my journey west. #americanlandscape #echocanyon #utah #byuma #farout https://www.instagram.com/p/CHvmv-wFPn-/?igshid=tb08sbpx7h1m

For the next few days I’ll be taking over the Yancey Richardson IG, posting images from my journey across the country to install my solo exhibition, Far Out: The West Re-Seen at BYU Museum of Art, and continuing on to Southern California to begin work on a new project. Head to @yanceyrichardsongallery to see the full collection of images. On October 9th, I left NY to head west. After 20 consecutive years of life on the road, packing remains a challenge, especially with COVID. I’m loaded with masks, sanitizer, my camera equipment, camping gear, and all the necessities for various weather conditions from high temperatures to snow. I-80 Truck Stop in Iowa is the world’s largest truck stop. I feel aligned with truckers having traveled these familiar roads. I woke to a frigid snowy morning while camping at the Curt Gowdy State Park in Cheyenne, Wyoming. #victoriasambunaris #art #largeformatphotography #landscapephotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CHtQzFYF9Ea/?igshid=osatsmxwsepe
