i wish i could say this more eloquently but watching these college solidarity encampments popping up around the world… watching university faculty use themselves as shields to protect their students from the police… watching these students put their own safety on the line to demand divestments… i’ve never seen anything like it, and every update moves me to tears.

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.

i think its so funny that alumni from schools like harvard and columbia that were there during the protests in the 60s-80s are expressing support for students currently protesting against the genocide in palestine, and random zionists that were NOT at these protests in the 60s-80s have the never ending audacity to tell these alumni "well thats different, what you protested was good and what they're protesting is bad." as if protesters against the vietnam war and apartheid south africa were not also demonized, arrested, brutalized, and even killed for their activism. history only remembers them fondly after the damage has already been done.

Oh to be a thirty something ex-buzzfeed employee making a stone faced apology with your two coworkers/business partners on a three seater couch after experiencing massive public backlash.

If anything, the watcher entertainment fiasco taught me one thing about myself: I'm not immune to parasocial relationships and I was most definitely in one with Ryan and Shane.
I love them to bits but honest to goodness this was a wake up call I'm kind of thankful I got. I'm not planning on quitting the channel but I'll feel zero sense of duty to support or promote them unless their episodes are on another level

Absolutely AMAZING response by Watcher imo.
They acknowledged that they made a mistake, made the wider context more clear, and addressed basically all of the criticisms brought forward by the community as far as I know.
Anyone who already subscribed to the streaming service who no longer wants it gets a refund.
Patrons get a free subscription to the streaming service.
The service now only offers early, ad-free episodes that will still be released on YouTube.
They acknowledged the insensitivity of the original pitch and how the price is not something that everyone can afford.
THIS is how you respond to backlash, especially this widespread. Take time to collect your thoughts, take the criticism into account, and change your actions going forward.
Great job Watcher 👏

i've seen receipts of them (possibly) buying bot subscribers four times now. 3.3k each time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i had seen the first one, with two sudden increases in subscriber count around 2.9, then @b0gmyrtle brought to my attention the one around 2.86, and looking up this on Twitter i found a third one, around 2.84

The “they only need 0.5% of you to sign up to be successful” commentary.
Yeah. That’s the point. That’s why people are upset.
They’d rather have 0.5% of their fans and their money.
That’s what hurts people.
It feels like they never cared about the 99.5% of fans and their
1. Love of the shows
2. Fan art
3. Intense Loyalty
4. Fandom community
5. Tours
6. Merch
If only 0.5% of you watxh and give them $6 then to them it’s a success. Because you can’t have those things above us only the eyes of 0.5% of your fan base.
That’s why people are so devastated as fans who helped them get to where they are today. All those things above is what afforded them the idea they’re big stars and worthy of Hulu prices for a single show or two.

I am begging on my hands and knees for somebody to get me within the walls of Watcher HQ. I will give each of them $6 individually to let me study their brains and their thought process.
This is one of the few things in recent memory that has gripped my attention and I am following actively.
It is so fascinating to me how a fumble of historic proportion was made in 14 minutes that they destroyed eight years of goodwill and trust. Subscribers are falling faster than they can bot them. The Internet is circling, they smell blood.
Tumblr media
I just feel bad for anybody who doesn’t make decisions and now their job could be in jeopardy but other than that, this fumble is earthshaking… For them! I go to bed at night and I sleep like a rock because I didn’t inadvertently call the people who have been supporting me for eight years broke
