id: Perhaps the greatest horror of Jackson's haunting is not that the house seduces Eleanor into literally sacrificing herself for the sake of belonging, but that having done so, it still does not let her belong. Eleanor may imagine herself to be joining the ghostly children who try to enter her room, sing to her, hold her, and ask her for help, but this promised intimacy is as delusive as any other in Hill House. In Kahane's terms, Eleanor has given her life to become "everything" and has become nothing. The house does not want her any more than anyone else does; it wants her dead. After all, whatever walks in Hill House walks alone.
