Project #4: Manipulating the Mass
Derived from the saying, “Manipulating the Masses”, typically associated with political propaganda, this project will explore/address the idea of manipulation, whether it be within the political arena or span to that of interpersonal relationships, all through the manipulation of clay utilizing slab building techniques – soft, leather-hard and press mold – using pattern templates as well as alteration techniques of form.
Two specific objects/forms are central in this investigation: The teapot and the covered container. These are to serve as key components in your visual dialogue of Manipulation. Along with additional units/elements through the mechanisms of interaction, staging, affect/effect, proximity/distance, grouping; all within a grounding, sculptural element, to create a narrative that visually addresses the concept of manipulation.

Project #2– “Bobblehead – Object in Action & for Action”
“A bobblehead is a type of toy or doll with historical roots as early as the 17th century. Initially made of clay and wood but more currently, plastic, the ‘head’ is often oversized compared to the ‘body’. Technically the ‘head’ unit is connected to the ‘body’ by a spring in such a way that a light tap will cause the head to bobble, hence the name.”
“Create a kinetic Bobblehead using the Solid/Hollow method as a vehicle for Activism. Its design needs to address a contemporary issue - socio, political, economic, environmental, etc. -that is important to you. It can be national, international or global in context. The Bobblehead should clearly address a well-researched issue(s) to incite awareness, and possible action; it is it as a possible ‘agent’ for change.”

“Creating a dynamic hollow, three-dimensional form using the Pinch method. Design of form is influenced by research of 2 animals life forms (non-domesticated) currently on the WWF threatened or endangered species list. Composite of bodily animalistic attributes from both life forms is basic of design.”
