initially when i was working on my skyrim au, i wanted leon to be a part of some faction because i didn't want to write him as the dragonborn but i still wanted some reasoning for involvement in key storylines, and my brain was immediately like oh, we'll go with the dawnguard, fighting the undead and other monstrosity-adjacent corrupted creatures like the daedra could really work thematically for leon!

but then when i started thinking less thematically, and more narratively, especially for leon specifically as an individual and his narrative, since i specialize with writing leon in a dso centered storyline and mostly cover the toll the militarized industry has taken on him mentally, physically, and morally, while i could do some twisting and make the dawnguard faction work, i've actually decided to write leon as part of the penitus oculatus, since the penitus oculatus works really well as a parallel to the dso, especially with leon as an imperial citizen, and it keeps leon in a high-level position potentially subject to the same plot points.

also, there's a history of corruption within the penitus oculatus that leaves narrative room for characters like krauser, the empire as a whole has some issues that can reasonably adapt the main story points of into darkness, and the proximity with the emperor juxtaposed with leon's proximity with the president in his main setting... i'm really glad i didn't dig my heels in because i love this so much better asjkhfdjh

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:

In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.

A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.

In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

leon developed an interest in the legal system generally after the traumatic death of his family and his later adoption into a family of career cops, which his adoptive father, harvey kennedy, and his adoptive uncle, mitch kennedy, both encouraged, hoping that leon's interest in the law would give him a comforting sense of structure after a chaotic childhood. after graduating from the police academy, leon is gifted matilda (the burst-fire handgun he uses in the raccoon city incident) from his father & uncle, both of whom are career cops.

leon rarely speaks italian to anyone but himself after the death of his biological family, but italian was the language he grew up speaking almost exclusively at home, and he tends to switch to italian when talking to small animals, young children, or his plants.

in his early life, due to leon's parents being barred from several establishments maintained by the mafia in new york, including grocer markets, and as well as having to seek employment at long-distance as a result, growing up leon mostly ate fast food, being low in price and quick to get when both parents worked 75% of the time. as an adult, he can't stand the taste of fast food, (will eat snakes, raw eggs, and raw fish without hesitation) and takes every opportunity he can to cook for himself or others, inviting members of the dso over eagerly multiple times and sending them home with tupperware containers packed to the lid. one of his few hobbies, he religiously writes his recipes on notecards over saving them digitally, and when he has the time, leon scouts for secondhand cookbooks.

@ubcs i think the transition definitely was a slow decline starting after resident evil: four, and had alot to do with leon being stuck with the plaga embedded in his nervous system? and when i say that, i don't mean like the plaga itself was corrupting his personality, even though that's a really cool concept, but more in a way that leon himself experienced a really traumatic event that stripped him of his sense of self, and an unfortunate consequence of that being leon started to overcompensate in his usual behaviors, both to try and control his situation, and to convince himself that he was still exactly who he was prior to resident evil: four, which, he wasn't. while i wouldn't go as far as to call it a loss of innocence moment, i would place that more on his entire experience in raccoon city, but this was a plunge off the deep end for leon in terms of becoming more jaded.

not being able to separate himself from the plaga, being "tainted" by his experiences with biohazards now not only mentally but now physically (his own perspective), this insecurity manifested both subconsciously and consciously, and it led him to become overbearing in his efforts to not only prevent it from happening to someone else, but to convince himself that it hasn't changed him fundamentally as a person. a failure to cure or protect someone from becoming infected and having to live with that like himself is synonymous to leon with proof that he is more monster than human - or hero - now, (biomutant = evil/villain, human = good/heroic, very black and white mindset 80% of the time with few exceptions) one of his deepest fears, and it also causes him to relive that personal experience by association with his ptsd, so he's extremely phobic of it now, developing a fear of needles and becoming a serious germaphobe.

i see him very much as a person who projects alot of his internal pain and mental anguish outwards, not constantly, but because he seems like a very heart on his sleeve kind of guy, and that can be a double-edged sword, and in his worst moments he projects alot of his issues onto whatever's directly in front of him, situation or person, and i think that with corruption being a driving force in his narrative in so many ways, this is one of the ways that presents itself in his personality as he accumulates more and more baggage mentally.

this behavior isn't a constant force to be dealt with, but it's definitely more commonly concurring than it should be. surprisingly, leon can be very dissociative / "eerily calm / professional" at his worst moments, i.e. while actively undergoing traumatic exposure in the field, and defaults to a one-foot-in-front-of-the-other mentality that he picked up in spec ops training, but in sharp contrast, in relaxed situations, civilian life, left to his own devices, leon has a tendency to spiral, and exhibit traits like his overbearing control issues or his short temper. leon becomes extremely nervous in day-to-day run-of-the-mill life, and its why he drinks so heavily in his personal life, to numb alot of that consistently mounting anxiety.

leon needs an emotional support animal, and a ton of therapy.
