I’ve been thinking about space lately. Your personal space: how much area do you and others create around yourselves? Your headspace. How much clutter do you have in your brain? How much additional room have you cleared for new ideas, thoughts, feelings? Does your mind race? Does it struggle to transition from thought to thought, task to task, person to person until you finally end up at anxiety? Physical space. Your environment - what colors do you see, what voices do you hear, what textures do you feel? Outer space. Everything that exists beyond. Everything we don’t know, and everything that could be. The night sky is a window of beauty and infinite possibility. It’s crazy to think about our relationship to space, and how deeply it affects our experience in this life, and the opportunities we have to shape it. My life has been profoundly shaped by my environments, the desert being one of them.  It feels like one of the most underrated. Why do we love the desert? Or maybe you don’t.. Maybe that’s just my bias. Why would anyone want to go to dry, hot, uninhabitable land? It’s hot. No photo-worthy waterfalls, tall trees, or flowing rivers. But then you go, you see the colors - the subtle purples, oranges, and whites that shine and glow next to each other. The way everything sits together. How big the sky is. How big the land is. You feel how open everything is. You realize life is barely able to exist there, but somehow you feel how it does. (at Space) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF2RaE2nQ6L/?igshid=86wds7yj1t8l

Lately, I’ve been creating space every morning - I give myself about 2 hours where nothing has to be done. I make some coffee, open my journal, and resist the urge to look at my phone. 2 hours feels like a lot on paper, but don’t we all deserve at least 2 hours of peacefulness a day? Some days I get lucky and wake up before most of the world does.. But usually, I wake up at a normal time and start working later than everyone else. We’ve all had the mornings where we wake up and head straight to a meeting without brushing our teeth or making our coffee.. They’re the worst. So I started thinking about what would be the opposite of that, the best. And I decided to opt-out of hurried mornings where I hit the productivity switch too soon. It’s taught me to put myself first. Not in the ego way - like me vs you… but in the way of intentionally spending time to shape my actual self. It’s taught me the important lesson of giving yourself the things you need. “How you spend your days is how you spend your life” (Annie Dillard) (at Space) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF423m3n1h7/?igshid=14nxh3tri35jp

When was the last time you looked at the stars? Like laid down on the ground and stared up at the sky until your eyes got to that weird focus point where stars begin to multiply and your peripheral shuts off. It should probably be a nightly thing - it’d get better with time. We’d rewire ourselves to look up and out. Reminding ourselves that the stars don’t care about our bank accounts. This quote is 2,000 years old but still true. ““Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow, and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune's control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.” ― Seneca (at Space) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGAknefHO63/?igshid=18z409u8icx44
