Like a lot of people, my favorite scene from Heartstopper is the TaraDarcy kiss from episode 3. I’ve literally been thinking about it and overanalyzing it nonstop since the show came out, and I’ve boiled down why I love it so much.
1. It’s a huge moment for Tara and Darcy to finally be out and kissing in public at a party. I also love the little headnod that Tara gives Darcy right before, too. (Mmmm that consent...chef’s kiss!)
2. Nick, whose entire social circle up until this point has been his straight friends, is seeing a bit of himself reflected back for the first time. (This is why representation matters people!) He’s seeing other people who are like him “in the wild” so to speak, and he’s not feeling so alone anymore.
3. The whole show is about queer joy but this scene specifically shows queer joy so fully and openly. Tara and Darcy are smiling and laughing. Nick is watching and smiling with second-hand joy, and he’s also realizing that falling in love with Charlie (which I believe he is very aware by this point is what is happening) is going to be so amazing if he embraces it. In the next scene, he’s riding the emotional high of this moment, and it gives him the courage he needs for that first kiss to happen.
And all of this monumental storytelling happens in under a minute with no dialogue.
