Dispatch band
Tumblr media
The buzz secured the band some national modern rock airplay of the reggae-tinged single "Open Up." They returned in 2001 with Gut the Van, which enjoyed national distribution through the Digital Club Network online store and showcased the group's energetic live act. June 2000 saw the release of Four-Day Trials, a fan-friendly album of first takes and live favorites that featured a jammy take on the Beastie Boys' "Root Down." Who Are We Living For? followed that October, and was marked by a more socially conscious tone alongside the band's fun, earthy grooves.īy this point, Dispatch had built a sizable East Coast following due to frequent university gigs and a strong Internet presence. The trio made their recorded debut in 1996 with Silent Steeples and returned a year later with Bang Bang. Members Brad Corrigan, Pete Heimbold, and Chad Urmston formed Dispatch while attending Middlebury College in Vermont. Their sound continued to grow outward in more ambitious directions over subsequent releases like 2017's America, Location 's Break Our Fall. They reunited for good in 2011 and made a strong chart showing with their comeback album, Circles Around the Sun. Not long after their sound began to evolve toward a more expansive electric approach, Dispatch disbanded in the mid-2000s, reuniting occasionally for one-off concerts. aesthetic, they amassed a large grassroots following and were early adopters of file-sharing. Boston-based rock trio Dispatch emerged in the late '90s, establishing themselves on the college and jam band circuit with albums like 1997's Bang Bang and 1999's Four-Day Trials, which displayed their mix of acoustic pop and folk-rock with occasional reggae and funk influences.

Music math level 2
Tumblr media
Both of these systems, and the vast majority of music in general, have scales that repeat on the interval of every octave, which is defined as frequency ratio of 2:1. One major difference between equal temperament tunings and just tunings is differences in acoustical beat when two notes are sounded together, which affects the subjective experience of consonance and dissonance. Just scales are built by multiplying frequencies by rational numbers, which results in simple ratios between frequencies, but with scale divisions that are uneven. Equal temperament scales are built by dividing an octave into intervals which are equal on a logarithmic scale, which results in perfectly evenly divided scales, but with ratios of frequencies which are irrational numbers. There are two main families of tuning systems: equal temperament and just tuning. Main articles: Musical tuning and Musical temperament Each successive octave spans twice the frequency range of the previous octave. The third octave spans from 440 Hz to 880 Hz (span=440 Hz) and so on. The next octave will span from 220 Hz to 440 Hz (span=220 Hz). When expressed as a frequency bandwidth an octave A 2–A 3 spans from 110 Hz to 220 Hz (span=110 Hz). all will be called doh or A or Sa, as the case may be). Therefore, any note and its octaves will generally be found similarly named in musical systems (e.g. There is no case in musical harmony where, if a given pitch be considered accordant, that its octaves are considered otherwise. Pitches at frequencies of half, a quarter, an eighth and so on of the fundamental are called suboctaves. Succeeding superoctaves are pitches found at frequencies four, eight, sixteen times, and so on, of the fundamental frequency. The octave of any pitch refers to a frequency exactly twice that of the given pitch. A scale has an interval of repetition, normally the octave. Each pitch corresponds to a particular frequency, expressed in hertz (Hz), sometimes referred to as cycles per second (c.p.s.). The most important scale in the Western tradition is the diatonic scale but many others have been used and proposed in various historical eras and parts of the world. ( Ernst Chladni, Acoustics, 1802)Ī musical scale is a discrete set of pitches used in making or describing music. Musical form Ĭhladni figures produced by sound vibrations in fine powder on a square plate. The elements of musical form often build strict proportions or hypermetric structures (powers of the numbers 2 and 3). Modern musical use of terms like meter and measure also reflects the historical importance of music, along with astronomy, in the development of counting, arithmetic and the exact measurement of time and periodicity that is fundamental to physics. Without the boundaries of rhythmic structure – a fundamental equal and regular arrangement of pulse repetition, accent, phrase and duration – music would not be possible. Confucius, like Pythagoras, regarded the small numbers 1,2,3,4 as the source of all perfection. Early Indian and Chinese theorists show similar approaches: all sought to show that the mathematical laws of harmonics and rhythms were fundamental not only to our understanding of the world but to human well-being. įrom the time of Plato, harmony was considered a fundamental branch of physics, now known as musical acoustics. Their central doctrine was that "all nature consists of harmony arising out of numbers". Though ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians and Mesopotamians are known to have studied the mathematical principles of sound, the Pythagoreans (in particular Philolaus and Archytas) of ancient Greece were the first researchers known to have investigated the expression of musical scales in terms of numerical ratios, particularly the ratios of small integers. 7 Musicians who were or are also mathematicians.

Shuttlesworth and other members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference also arranged housing and warned them of the likelihood of additional attacks, but the riders continued south, flying from Birmingham to New Orleans. Shuttlesworth then sent an armed group from Birmingham to ferry the Greyhound riders from the Anniston hospital to a new bus. As the bus burned, the white mob beat the Freedom Riders until the police arrived and ended the violence. Cowling, an Alabama undercover police officer, was aboard the bus and forced the attackers back at gunpoint. An attacker threw an incendiary bomb through a window, and the Freedom Riders and other passengers barely escaped the flames.

The crowd attacked the bus, breaking its windows and slashing tires, and then pursuing it until the driver was forced to stop because of flat tires several miles out of town. On May 14, the Greyhound bus arrived at the terminal in Anniston, Calhoun County, where a white mob waited with clubs and bats. The groups then stopped over in Atlanta, where they met with Martin Luther King Jr.įreedom RidersForewarned by Birmingham civil rights leader Fred Shuttlesworth of possible attacks in Alabama, the groups pressed onward. CORE's Freedom Riders met little resistance in the Upper South, but they encountered their first bloody scene when some minor violence erupted at the Rock Hill Greyhound Station in South Carolina, where Lewis was beaten by a group of young white men. Within the terminals, the riders planned to use segregated facilities such as restrooms and food services. The strategy was for black participants to sit up front and whites to sit in the back of the bus, with one pair of black and white participants seated together. They aimed to test the enforcement of the 1960 Supreme Court Bruce Boynton v. The 1961 Freedom Rides, as CORE leaders called them, were guided by nonviolent principles and had a similar goal. Virginia decision prohibited segregation on interstate buses. These trips were organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and modeled on the organization's 1947 Journey of Reconciliation, which had sought to test the effectiveness of desegregation laws in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia after the 1946 Morgan v. congressman from Georgia John Lewis, embarked on a Greyhound and a Trailways bus from Washington, D.C., on the first leg of a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. Tabbing is used to add visible structure to the code so that it is easier to read. Press the Enter key and then the Tab key. Position your cursor after the opening HTML tag. Other markup languages that a browser understands will have similar rules, with some variation.Ĥ. The opening tag tells the browser that we are writing in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and the same tag with a slash, as shown, tells the browser to stop rendering HTML. Close any open documents in Gedit and click File > New to start a new document.ģ. Fortunately Gedit works in plain text by default, so for the following examples no extra setup is necessary.Ģ. The first, very important step when writing HTML in any text editing application is to make sure that you are working in plain text format. In the following examples we used the Ubuntu Operating System with Gedit installed, so our screen shots show the Ubuntu and Gedit interfaces. Open a text editing application, such as TextEdit, Text Wrangler, TextMate, Smultron, or BBEdit. With the materiality of code in mind, we will construct our first web page.įor this chapter, create a folder on your desktop or hard drive and commit to saving everything that you make from or related to this chapter into that one folder. Portrait of Natalie Bookchin, Heath Bunting, 1998. As an example, Heath Bunting's 1998 portrait of Natalie Bookchin, an early net artist, can be seen here: The shapes and densities of the characters are treated purely as formal elements to construct line, form, and shading. Loosely defined, ASCII art is art made by arranging the 128 glyphs that are part of the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, usually in the form of figurative drawings. Because of these limits on the use of high-resolution images, people found creative ways of drawing with text. Web pages were designed with few images because they took too long to download. In the early years of the World Wide Web, bandwidth was limited, so a large amount of communication took place on text-only listservs, chat rooms, multi-user dungeons (MUDs), and bulletin board servers (BBSs). Jodi (Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans), 1995, website and HTML source code, used by permission of the artists. Jodi took advantage of this feature to make a brilliant visual and conceptual argument for breaking the rules of web design. Web pages are written in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), which ignores extra "white space" characters. In the source code Jodi reveals the message of the work in a simple illustration. Where design elements are organized to create visual messages in the browser, Jodi appears random and frantic. It can be thought of as a material that hides its own materiality. The site looks like disorganized text in the browser, and viewing the source reveals a rough diagram of a nuclear bomb made with the letters of the source code. Theirs responded to the corporate attempt to professionalize the aesthetics of online media and conceal the presence of code.

In the early moments of the dot-com boom, when corporations began to stake out an aesthetic and functional claim online (1995, 1996), Jodi hosted a series of confrontational pages. The artist group Jodi (Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans) works extensively with the materiality of code. While web sites are usually programmed to hide the presence of code in a seamless graphic facade, experimental artists often revel in exposing it. Whereas in the previous applications we have clicked and dragged our way to good design, with web pages we design interface elements and then write the code that describes what we want our interface to look like in the browser.
