Week 4 Journal
I really enjoyed reading this weeks excerpt, Steal Like and Artist by Austin Kleon. It was easy to follow along and humorous. The ted talk was entertaining as well. The reading consisted of 10 things Kleon wished he had learned in college. What I got from this reading is that real artist admit that they steal other ideas from other artist as inspiration for their own work. This kind of reminds me of the first reading we did that art is shared, we look at other peoples art and get ideas incorporating these techniques into our own work. Some strong points also in the reading is that nothing is orginial but still being true to what you enjoy. These 10 things are like a creative manifesto, basically on how to come up with creative ideas that can be interpreted in many ways. I agree with his main points in the book, but some people and artist out there may not.

Week 3 Journal
In this week’s reading of the Cannibal Manifesto by Oswald de Andrade’s I was a bit confused on what the main idea of the Manifesto being that I don’t know much about Brazilian culture, but after analyzing I got that the writer was writing on behalf of the indigenous people who rejected communism with the cannibalism, which was Brazils greatest strength. As I am no familiar with a lot of the European references that he makes in this manifesto I have and understanding that Brazil must cannibalize other cultures to make their own culture. There is a line in the reading, “Tupi or not Tupi,” which was emphasized a lot and seemed very important. The tupi are a tribe in south America whom practiced cannibalism. And my thoughts on this is that since this was a symbolic of Brazilian culture in the first quote of the manifesto, “Cannibalism alone unites us.” It allows for other cultures and people to unite. Just like how art can unite us and we can share certain aspects of different pieces of art.

Week 2 Journal
This weeks reading was on Walter Benjamin’s essay The Work of Art in Age of Mechanical Reproduction. What I took from this reading was Benjamin’s view on how technology has changed how we as people perceive art. The main ideas I get from this reading is that art is replicable and changable  though when the realness or authenticy is changed, the total function of art is reversed. The essay also talked a lot about aura and the space and time effect which i found very interesting while reading. Human perception is talked a lot throughout the essay as people change within time. When human perception changes the aura deteriorates. It is fun to gain knowledge on the history of Art and New Media every week and I’m looking forward to learning more about famous artists in the coming week.

Week 1 Journal
The first week of class we covered the syllabus and class expectations, along with a reflection of the article on New Media Art. Before the introduction of this class I was unfamiliar with what would be expected in the class and little knowledge about what New Media really was. After reading the article however, I have a good understanding of how it was brought up and the results its had on the world since technology became popular. In short, New Media Art is to describe the projects that make use of new technologies from subsets of two cateogries being Art and Technology and Media art. For example, electronic art, Genomic art, Video art, and film. From the article it seems as if there is a worry that New Media art has run its course as a movement but its ideas are still used by people today. Im excited to learn methods of creative media art during this course and hopefully use them outside of my concentration in the future.
