This is apparently national news in Canada. Years back, a man was getting into his car with his family to return home from an event in downtown Toronto. Two people ran up to his car and began banging on the windows, demanding he get out. Thinking they were about to carjack him, he tried to speed forward, but an unmarked van cut him off, so he peeled out in reverse. Unbeknowest to him, the people were all undercover, plainclothes cops - who at no time identified themselves as police. Making matters worse, a third cop had run up behind the car, but apparently tripped, and was then run over accidentally and died. The driver was charged with first-degree murder. When he got bail - every politician out there made comments about the injustice of this "cop killer" bailing out and how broken the system is, etc. Well, after what must have been years of hell, the driver was acquitted on all charges by a jury of his peers and the prosecution's case was so shoddy that the judge apologized to the driver and there's now going to be an inquest into why the case went to court in the first place (hint: the driver was racialized!). After the verdict, the chief of police of Canada's largest municipal police force publicly stated that "he'd been hoping for a different outcome." What does it mean when someone in such a position hopes for retribution instead of justice?
