The only thing far worse than racism is respectability politics. Telling a Black person he has look like X, sound Y and be like Z in order to make it in a country, in a world that looks at him or her as if they are cockroaches.
The only thing far worse than sexism is respectability politics. Telling a woman she has look X, sound like Y and be like Z in order to be respected and loved by her peers.
The only thing far worse than homophobia is respectability politics. Telling a queer person they have look like X, sound like Y and be like Z in order to be accepted in an ignorant society that sees them as barely tolerable or strange.
I want you to think about that next time you police black and brown bodies, queer bodies or women's bodies.
