Cassandra let out a small breath. No, she didn’t really want to stop what she was working on and go look at this kid’s machines. But the guilt she felt over how things went at the expo kept her from giving her usual snappy answer. She called him a friend… she needed to start acting like it.

“Sure, Varian.” She put her quill down, offering a small smile as she turned to face him. “What did you make this time?” As sweet as the last one had been, she really hoped this one wasn’t named after her too. She couldn’t take that level of embarrassment.

     it took a good amount of restraint on his part to keep from jumping at cassie’s words. he could contain himself. he was mature and definitely could keep his composure at the idea of a friend coming over to see on of his inventions. 

     he would show her that he could be cool and could invent things that wouldn’t blow up. 

     ❛ r-really, you’ll come ? i mean uh, c-cool. cool. yeah. this one is a bit of a newer idea. i was thinking about how you’re in the guard right ? and sometimes bad guys probably get away. not ! not when you’re chasing them of course, i’m sure you catch everyone you go after. but, for people who aren’t you, i made a new device i call a ‘kablooey’ ! that’s the sound it makes. it launches my sticky bombs at high speeds over big distances. attaches at the wrist so you don’t have to worry about carrying around a bit bulky launcher ! ❜

     in truth he’d thought a lot about the emperor’s coven. mostly about how to dismantle it with his small group of friends. not that the golden guard needed to know that.

     ❛ no. no killing people definitely is the next best option. i don’t even know why i have to study this stuff. i already know the answer, why do they want me to spend the extra five minutes on each question explaining how i got it ? ❜

            Varian was well aware that his workaholic behavior was troublesome and unhealthy but it wasn’t exactly something he could really help. old habits die hard and all that, as they say. true, he was getting a little better at managing his time and he tried not to work every hour of every day.             besides, he liked spending time with Jim. and he knew Jim liked spending time with him, even if Varian tended to go off on a tangent every now and then.

            『 ❝ unfortunately, you’re right. but believe me, lover boy, I’m keeping track of all the times you’ve interrupted my working. ❞ 』 Varian set aside what he’d been working on, turning to lean back against the desk and crossing his arms over his chest. 『 ❝ of course I know that’s just because you love my company. ❞ 』 he teased lightly, offering a smile.

     ❛ keeping track hm ? what do i get when i fill up your tally board ? ❜

     one of these days, varian was going to go to bed at a regular time. he was going to actually get some sleep and jim wouldn’t have to come in here and force him into his bed. but for now, he could suffice with distracting the other from his work. 

     ❛ of course i love your company. i especially love it when i actually get it. hard to do that when you have your nose deep in chemicals. c’mon, i made some meatloaf and roasted veggies for dinner. why don’t you just put this stuff away until tomorrow ? ❜
