Some really interesting triva I learned yesterday when I met Michel Breton, a talented concept artist who worked on Coraline.
To accentuate the idea that Coraline’s home was boring, Henri Selick asked the team to break the perceptive in the kitchen of the pink palace by putting a small angle on the floor and the ceiling to make the overall picture/atmosphere of the scene more bland, you can clearly see the difference upon comparing the set of the kitchen in the other world.
Apparently it was a pain in the ass for the animator cause they could only animate the characters going from side to side across the set and they also had to work on a angle, but they did an excellent job cause the final product look amazing and really put an accent on the ‘’boring’’ perspective of the scene!
