The progression in their relationship is wonderful
I’m not the only one who thought of this crossover, right? For anyone who doesn’t know, these are (kinda) scene redraws of moments in ‘Rascal does not dream of bunnygirl-senpai’ as TodoMomo scenes. Believe me, the title of the anime is so misleading, it’s such a great show. The relationship between Sakuta and Mai (main dude and girl) is amazingly written. I just thought Sakuta’s aloofness fit Todoroki’s so much and yeah, I got inspired (actual reason: I found the idea of Todoroki saying “I want them to sandwich me” so funny, that I had to draw it)
Anyways, this got me to practice a bit, mostly with backgrounds, but also with trying to recreate scenes without just straight up copying them. Background’s are a real pain, but at least I tried.

The Todoroki Family and Domestic Violence
Okay so i said i was going to do a post on this, particularly on Enji and Rei's marriage, Rei as a victim/victor of domestic abuse, the honeymoon phase, and the dynamics of an abusive family.
Personally, as a survivor of domestic violence myself and an advocate for survivors of domestic abuse, I'm well infromed on this topic and i see a telltale, textbook model of domestic violence in the Todoroki family. So, im going to cover this topic and im going to go into detail, so if the topic of abuse upsets you, you may not want to read further.
Domestic Violence and The Types of Abuse:
By definition, Domestic violence is violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner, sometimes including the abuse of the children and/or pets within the household.
There are several types of abusive behaviors the abusers will use to intimidate, belittle, and control their victim (s). The abuser may use one or more of these types of abuse, but often time it begins with emotional/verbal abuse and isolation and control of finances, and then escalates to physical and sexual violence. I've provided short examples of these types of abuse below, as well as an image that details how the abuser uses these types of abuse to gain power and control over the victim(s):
Physical Abuse: the act of physically causing harm or intending/threatening to cause harm to another. Slapping, kicking, punching, choking, shoving/pushing, use of weapons, are all examples of physical abuse. Physical abuse may be as severe as beating or attempting to murder the victim, or minor as slapping or pushing the victim.
Emotional abuse: the act of belittling, degrading, insulting, and putting down the victim. The abuser may publically humilate or embarass the victim, gaslight the victim, or pick on flaws and insecurities the victim already has. Emotional abuse is often a gateway to other types of abuse like physical and sexual abuse, and meant to wear down the victims self worth and self respect.
Sexual abuse: this term includes not only rape and sexual assault within the abusive relationship, but also harassment, unwanted touching, forced pregnancy/abortion, and sexual abuse or threaten of sexual abuse of the children.
Financial Abuse: controlling the income in the household and withholding it from the victim. This includes not allowing the victim to work or taking their paychecks from them, not allowing the victim to have their own bank accounts or bank cards, controlling the amount of money they are allowed and what they spend it on. This is normally used as a way to make the victim dependent on the abuser.
Psychological Abuse: a wide range of abusive, fear-causing behaviors meant to mentally damage and intimidate the victims. This includes threatening the victim, children, pets, or friends and relatives, destroying property, emotional blackmail, isolation/preventing the victim from leaving the house, and trying to convince the victim that the abuse is their own doing.
Tumblr media
We have seen Endeavor use these types of abuse towards his wife and children often.
We see him slap Rei off screen, we see him physically abusing Shouto with the "training," its implied he physically abused Rei, Shouto, and Touya.
Emotionally, there is a lot of gaslighting, belittling, and victim blaming in the household. Enji also ignores and neglects Fuyumi and Natsuo most of their lives. He criticizes Shouto often and holds him to very high expectations. He gaslights Rei when she asks him to stop "training" Shouto, acting as if she is overreacting and babying him. He puts the remarks that the other three children are failures. When talking about Touya to Shouto, he states that he was "almost perfect" if it hadnt been for the "weaknesses he inherented from his Mother" and that his situation was "regrettable" because of these things, which is a example of victim blaming.
We see Endeavor destroy his property a few times as well, presumably out of anger but he may have done this as a form of intimidation as well.
Rei is shown as rather quiet and soft spoken, like she's "walking on eggshells" all the times. Thw timidness and nervousness is common in survivors and victims of abuse. When she tries to prevent the abuse of her children, she puts herself in harm's way, sacrifices herself to try to protect them. Before her attacking Shouto, she insists she can't take it anymore, begging her mother for help. She says even the kids look like him, so trapped in her trauma she cannot separate. This is PTSD (no, not Stockholm syndrome). She's in a vulnerable place, its possible there was an incident that Enji abused her right before this. She sees her child, who reminds her of her abuser, it triggers her trauma. Fight or flight kicks in, and she attacks.
In the hospital, shes calm, but sorrowful. Shes haunted by her past as a survivor of abuse. It did a lot of damage to her mentally and she's still in the hospital, not stable enough to be released. Shes still scared of him, she says it herself, and that's expected of a survivor. Notice how i say Survivor, not victim in this paragraph? Cause she isn't just a victim anymore. She's a survivor, she gets the flowers from her abusive husband, he asks to see her, but she will not go back and listens to her doctors advice. She wont fall back into the role of a victim, and im proud of her. :))
An Abusive Household and Roles in a Dysfunctional Family:
Growing up in a Dysfunctional, abusive household will have a lot of varying adverse affects on the children who grow up within these households. Often times, as an attempt to cope with the trauma and mess of this lifestyle, the children will fall into different roles within the family and it will effect each child differently.
As i can see it, it appears Hori modeled the Todoroki family with the main roles found in dysfunctional families in mind. Enji and fit the examples of a narassistic Father role and a battered woman. The children all fit perfectly into four different roles and ill go into detail of that below, from eldest to youngest, detailing and defining the role they took and how the household as affected them:
Tumblr media
Touya - The Scapegoat: assuming Touya is Dabi, he fits into the role of the scapegoat in a Dysfunctional Family.
The scapegoat role, also referred to as the "black sheep" or "problem child" of the family, is often treated with the most amount of cruelity and criticism in the family, and has the tendency to lash out with aggression, anger, and rebellious behaviors. They often mimic the aggressive behaviors and act as a "mirror" for the family's dysfunction. The scapegoat is usually the main recipient of the narcissist's negative projections, and normally the child that experiences the majority of the narassists abuse, and the most likely to experience the brunt of physical, emotional, and sometimes sexual abuse. Due to the inablity to "do right" in the abusers eyes, the level of cruelity towards the scapegoat will often esclate to extremes in an attempt to "break" them of their rebellious behaviors.
The scapegoat is the truth teller of the family, and will often verballize or act out the problems within the home that the family is trying to hide or deny. They will usually rebel from the family or be disowned by the family due to their habit of truth telling. They are blunt and honest about what they see and feel about the others in the household.
Scapegoats come in many different flavors, but two common ones are:  1) the picked, weak or sick child; or,  2) the angry, rebellious problem child who is constantly getting into conflicts. They are often self-destructive, cynical and even mean or violent.
Those examples each fit Touya, a weak and frail child, and Dabi, a self destructive, cynical, and violent man. These examples could show why Touya was targeted, for being "weak," and shows the role he took as Dabi, ruthless, blunt, and violent. Like the black sheep, Touya is no longer a current part of the family, and has wandered off alone or he was left behind.
Fuyumi - The caretaker: also referred to as "the peacekeeper," is the member who swoops in to save the day and the face of the family. They are the ones that devote all their time to keeping the peace within the family, keeping up the image of a "perfect family." They will usually take on the role of caring for younger siblings if the parents arent able or willing to. They try desperately to hold everything together and defuse every situation before conflict arrises.
The caretaker is forced to mature much quicker in a dysfunctional family, and has learned to act like an adult in order to survive. Later in life, the caretaker will remain stuck in this role, feeling responsible for their loved ones and constantly in a state of anxiety and worry. Due to having to grow up too fast, they didnt get to experience a childhood, and often have trouble letting go and having fun. They feel as though they need to always be a mature and responsible adult, and always keep an eye out in case things go wrong.
Fuyumi is shown trying to play peacemaker a lot, trying to calm down Natsuo when he loses his temper, forgiving their Father quickly to avoid conflict and keep the peace, and monitoring what her brothers do and say in front of/to their parents to avoid any negative situations.
She seems to look after her younger brothers, often shows concern for them and parents them in a way. She's very timid and nervous in her body language, and very mature emotionally and responsible. And, on top of that, she's now a teacher and works as a caretaker for children.
Natsuo - The Lost Child: The lost child is the child you don’t notice. They’ll fade into the background for safety. The lost child is a loner who never rocks the boat and doesn’t cause a fuss. Instead, they blend in with the wallpaper and hope that people forget they are there.
In an NPD family, The Lost Child just doesn't seem to matter to the narcissist, and avoids conflict by keeping a low profile. They are not perceived as a threat or a good source of supply, but they are usually victim of neglect and emotional abuse.
They often slip through the cracks, going unnoticed by their siblings and parents. Living this reclusive life it is possible that they will lose touch with other family members Or they may have a ‘love/hate’ relationship with certain family members.
Despite being quiet, the lost child often harbours pent up bitterness and resentment, right under the surface. Sometimes this comes out by cutting themselves off from the family later in life, or a dam will open and all of that anger will come out.
Natsuo is definitely the lost child in his family. He seems well mannered, a bit goofy, and doesn't really draw much attention to himself. He says himself that his Father barely looked him in years. He was neglected and deemed a failure by his Father, so he avoided the family, blended into the background, later leaving the home for college. But that anger still boiled under his skin, and that dam broke and he let it out on his Father like we see in chapter 192. All that resentment and bitterness came up and out.
Shouto - The Golden Child: It is harder to see the damage done to the golden child. They appear to be above reproach--adored and praised, spoken of with pride. But the golden child is merely a pawn in the narcissist family system, an extension of the narcissist with no real identity or personal boundaries of their own.
Over-responsible and self-sufficient they are often perfectionists and over-achievers.  The parents look to this child to prove that they are good parents and good people. Their goal in life is to achieve "success", however that has been defined by the family;  they must always be "brave and strong”. They learn at a young age to suffer the sadness of a parent and become a surrogate spouse or confidante.
The golden child is often held to very high standards, expected to be perfect, and meets harshness and cruelity if they cannot live up to these standards, often times in the form of emotional, physical, and sometimes sexual abuse, or witnessing the abuse of the other parent and/or sibling(s) within the household. They need to meet all the expectations of the abusive parent, and all of the goals of the parent is often projected onto the golden child, giving them a lack of sense of self and idenity.
When Shouto is first introduced, hes shown as perfect, amazes all of the other students. He's determinded and a bit arragont and cold, but very brave and strong. The more we see of Shouto, the deeper emotions and trauma we see within him. He's a perfectionist and holds himself to high standards, his father holds him to high standards and belittles him and puts him down when he falls. In the beginning, he seems to be very unsure of himself despite the mask of confidence. He's awkward and has a hard time relating to the other students.
He's called the masterpiece of his Father, and used to accomplish Endeavor's goals for him. He's expected to be perfect. This is repeated over and over during the story, especially early on before endeavor's "redemption."
Each of the children fit very well into these roles, and honestly its too clearly defined in them for Hori to have not looked into this and included it.
Redemption, The Stages of Abuse, and The Honeymoon Phase:
*deep breath* okay... some people may not like me for saying this, but... i don't see Endeavor as Redeemed. When i look at this "improved-and-changed" endeavor, i see an abuser in the honeymoon stage of an abusive relationship.
To understand what the honeymoon phase is, you'll need to understand the cycle and stages of abuse within an abusive relationship. Below ive included a image of the cycle of abuse and i will go through these stages and how they could apply to Endeavor:
Tumblr media
1. This is the phase when the abuser is starting to show annoyance and aggression. The "calm before the storm" so to speak. Theyre tense, stressed, and nitpicking, looking for a reason to get angry, waiting fir their victim to slip up.
2. This is the stage where the incident of abuse happens. They blow up, and attack the victim physically or emotionally. This is the "blow up" moment when they start yelling, hitting, and blaming.
3. This is the stage where the abuser comes back to apologize. Its never a real apology. It normally involves excuses "i just got very angry, lost control, etc" and blaming the victim "well if you didn't do [this], or weren't like [that], i wouldn't have done what i did." They will downplay the event, "i didnt hit you that hard, youre being dramatic/too sensitive, etc."
4. The honeymoon stage. The abuser will be calm again, try to "make up" for the abuse by acting extra kimd, buying things for the victim, insisting they've changed. The physical and emotional abuse stops during this stage, and everything seems okay...
Until it comes full circle.
We've seen these stages in Enji. For example, he's annoyed and frustrated with Shouto during the "training," tells him to stop pretending to be weak, and then lashes out verbally at Rei when she tries to stop him, resulting in the incident, where he hits her.
Several times he shows "remorse", like during the third stage, for the things hes done, but its never fully his fault, he never takes full responsibility. When mentioning Touya to Shouto, he says Touya's "case was regrettable" implying he felt regret for whatever had happened to him, but goes on to turn it to be about Touya, saying that he was "almost perfect" if he wasnt so "weak from his mother." Like i said before, that's victim blaming. Hes blaming Touya for not being able to withstand his fire, he's blaming Touya for whatever happened to cause his disappearance. Enji takes no responsibility.
When Rei snaps and burns Shouto's face, Enji has her sent away. Again, he appears to show regret, but he takes no responsibility in the fact he has abused and mistreated her so badly she became unstable. He doesn't hospitalize her for concern for her well being or even really the well being of his children. He does it because she "hurt his masterpiece" and he is punishing her for it.
During the pro hero arc, this happens again. He shows remorse but his apology feels fake. Again, hes pushing the golden child role on Shouto, saying how "proud" he is, to butter him up instead of actually apologizing for what he did. He does admit his wrong in how he treated Rei and Shouto, but does not even mention the other three children he mistreated. And his "apology" for Rei and Shouto feels more like sweeping it under the rug to be forgotten rather than trying to own up to it.
Then we see the place hes been in now. The calm. Hes not outright abusing or neglecting his children right now. He gives Rei flowers in an attempt to get her back (i cannot tell you how many times ive had victims ive victims i worked with go back because he gave her a rose or jewelry.) He avoids bringing up the past, acts the part of a changed man. He seems nice, right? Or is he just a step away from repeating the cycle again? I hope not but...
Well, in his own words, sike, did we really think he'd be that nice? (I'm sorry, but ahhhhhhh omg that scares the hell out of me.)
Honestly, in so many ways, the Todoroki family is a textbook protrayal of a dysfunctional family and abusive household.
In addition to this long ass meta post, im including resources for anyone that may be experiencing abuse or suspect abuse of a loved one. No one deserves to be hurt.

Here’s the translation for the Boku No Hero Academia Season 3 Volume 3 Drama CD featuring Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, & Iida in the Don Quihote looking for a disguise but getting distracted. Kirishima ends up being the one who chooses everyone’s outfits. In case the audio stops working, here’s another link! Enjoy~
Iida: Bakugou was kidnapped by the League of Villains and in order to rescue him, I, Iida Tenya, along with Midoriya-kun, Kirishima-kun, Todoroki-kun, and Yaoyorozu-kun came to Kamino Ward thanks to Yaoyorozu’s detection device. However, we are in a very bustling district at night, and people would notice us if they see five teenagers just walking around. In the worst case scenario, we might even be taken into the police station. Because of these reasons, we decided to go buy disguises at the nearby Don Quihote super cheap department store.
Iida: So this is the rumored “extremely cheap” discount store, the Super Cheap Don Quihote!
Todoroki: Iida, have you been here before?
Iida: No, have you?
Todoroki: Nope.
Yaoyorozu: I’ve never been here either! Well then, let’s go inside the Super Cheap Don Quihote department store!
Todoroki: Yaoyorozu, aren’t you a bit too excited about this?
Yaoyorozu: Wha—no way! What do you mean? This is just my first time experiencing something like this so…
Iida: WHAT! WHAT THE…Just look at all the volume and depth of all these items!!
Todoroki: There are way too many rows. Each row is so packed that only one person can pass through it at a time.
Iida: There’s even goods packed all the way up to the ceiling! How would a customer even get an item so high up? Do they even intend to sell these!?
Todoroki: Probably not.
Yaoyorozu: I heard from Ashido-san that this type of super department store has so many items that you get a thrill from searching for the items you’re interested in!
Todoroki: What does that even MEAN?
Yaoyorozu: To put it simply, it’s like playing a game while shopping!
Todoroki: That just sounds annoying.
Yaoyorozu: As expected of Kirishima-san and Midoriya-san, seeing as how they are able to walk easily through these narrow pathways!
Todoroki: They must be used to these kind of places.
Iida: To…Todoroki-kun!
Todoroki: What, Iida?
Iida: Just look! This 100% real and no preservatives orange juice that I always drink is only 900yen for six 2 liter bottles! If you calculate it, each liter is only 150yen each! Just what kind of cheap price is this!?? This store’s catch phrase of “SUPER CHEAP” is actually true! It’s so cheap! I just gotta buy it here!
Todoroki: Iida, do you intend to rescue Bakugou while holding 12 liters bottles??
Iida: Ah…you’re right! Sorry. I was distracted by the cheapness of these items! However, the next time I come to this store, I WILL DEFINITELY PURCHASE THIS ENTIRE CASE OF JUICE! DON QUIHOTE KAMINO BRANCH…I WILL REMEMBER YOU!!!!!
*explosions*
Yaoyorozu: Iida-san, Todoroki-san, it seems like the first floor is all food products.
Todoroki: Hey, Kirishima and Midoriya went up the escalators just now.
Iida: If we look at the floor director, clothing is on the 4th floor! All right, let’s go to the 4th floor then!
Yaoyorozu: Since we’re here, we might as well also check out the 2nd and 3rd floors, too!
Todoroki: Are you serious?
Yaoyorozu: Ah…well uh…maybe we can find goods that we can assist us!
Iida: Oh, that makes sense! Let’s check each floor one by one then!
Todoroki: So we finally have made it to the 4th floor, but where is Midoriya and Kirishima? All of these products are obscuring my vision- I can’t see where anyone is standing.
Yaoyorozu: Right, but uh, the 2nd floor’s make-up section was truly amazing. There were so many items there, and all brands that I’ve never even heard about!
Iida: The 3rd floor’s home interior goods was also amazing! There were even T.V. sets sold in house! On top of that, the prices were also way lower than usual!
Yaoyorozu: As expected of Don Quihote!
Iida: Indeed, it should not be taken lightly!
Todoroki: You guys…did you just come here to shop??
Yaoyorozu & Iida: Um…
Todoroki: Why did we come into this store?
Yaoyorozu: To buy disguises for ourselves, of course!
Todoroki: Well, it’s fine if you know, but…
Iida: By the way, Yaoyorozu-kun, have you thought about what kind of disguise you would like to wear?
Yaoyorozu: Anything is fine with me.
Todoroki: Anything…?
Yaoyorozu: Yes! I heard this from Ashido-san, but Don Quihote has a lot of cosplay items, rather, very intricately designed costumes, such as a policeman, or nurse, flight attendant, a priestess, or even a witch!
Iida: If you wear the disguise of a fantasy concept like a witch, wouldn’t that be a bit contradictory?
Yaoyorozu: There are other options! Little Red Riding Hood, Urashimatarou, Momotarou, and more!
Todoroki: If we wear those outfits, we would stand out even more.
Iida: Kamino Ward is a very busy shopping district, and it’s nighttime as well. I’d like an outfit that would fit the scene, but…
Todoroki: I’m not really into trends these days either.
Iida: Same here.
Yaoyorozu: I am a bit versed in the Parisien fashion trends, but…
Todoroki: The only person among us who would know the latest trends is Kirishima, right? Let’s ask him to choose outfits for us.
Iida: I agree!
Yaoyorozu: I have no objections!
Todoroki: All right, then I’ll look for Kirishima and Midoriya and tell him! Wait for me here.
Iida: Okay!
Yaoyorozu: We shall wait here.
Iida: Well then, what should we do while waiting for Kirishima-kun and Midoriya-kun?
Yaoyorozu: Since we’re at Don Quihote, let’s check out a few other items!
Iida: All right.
Yaoyorozu: Iida-san, look at this! Three pairs of these shoes are ONLY 300 YEN!!!
Iida: LOOK AT THE TOWELS HERE! 10 FOR 200 YEN!!
Yaoyorozu: Why in the world is it so cheap? Would they even make money with this price?
Iida: It’s not something that we can investigate, but WOAH! All these glasses here are only 100yen!?
Yaoyorozu: This skirt here is only 980yen, and there’s a tag that says 70% off, too!
Iida: JUST WHAT KIND OF AMAZING STORE IS THIS, DON QUIHOTE!?
Yaoyorozu: IT REALLY IS!
Iida: I AM SO HAPPY I CAME HERE!
Yaoyorozu: YES, ME TOO~!!!!!!
Todoroki: You guys, have you forgotten what we came here to do!?
Iida: OF COURSE NOT!
Yaoyorozu: Yes, not at all!!
