The blue city of Chefchaouen located in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco. The town was built in the early 1400s and most buildings are blue and white. Apparently Jews who moved here during WW2 started painting buildings blue to remind them of the sky and god and heaven. Not sure why they just didn't look up. We got asked if it was tough sleeping in a tent in the Sahara Desert. Actually, it was very pleasant, more like a hotel room covered by canvas 😁. We drove more than 400km from Marrakesh over the Atlas Mountains to Tingher with a stop-off in Aït Benhaddou. We were surprised with the lack of traffic after the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh, so a pleasant 9-hour journey. Aït Benhaddou is an example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and the UNESCO site has been fortified since the 11th century. The village has appeared in loads of movies and TV including Gladiator, Jewel of the Nile, The Mummy, The Living Daylights and Game of Thrones ...... Into the Sahara desert tomorrow for 2 nights. We are loving wandering the Medina and souks of Marrakesh, so many interesting stalls. It is great to wander with no particular direction, get lost, get found, get lost again, and all the time admiring the wares. Now, if only we had a home to put some of these things into. We just had our first break away from our new home since March 21st when we arrived back in New Zealand. We went to stay with our friend Nic at Raumayi Beach. The beach is lovely with views of Kapiti Island (pic 1) a nature reserve full of New Zealand wildlife. We lived the walks along the beach with Nic's friend Alex (pic 2), blue skies on a winter day. Congratulations New Zealand. No new Covid-19 cases for over 2 weeks, and 0 cases being treated. It goes to show what quick action, clear and consistent messages from leadership, and a community willing to make sacrifices can do. We have moved to the lowest level Covid Alert and New Zealand is totally open internally, but our borders will remain tight for some time. We are very proud to be Kiwis and so happy we ended up being home by accident during these crazy times. We know that this isn't the end and we must still be vigilant, but for now we can celebrate our achievement. We hope you can join us soon. Herstmonceux Castle is not far from yesterday's castle pic. We went here early in the morning, hence the foggy scene.
